We stayed 6 nights in early August which was our second visit. Our only gripe the year before was that service could be slow, they seem to have sorted this out now and we enjoyed excellent food and good service. Lovely hotel, the kids love it, can't get a better hotel for kids. The verandah and den are brilliant and our 2 loved the 3 swimming pools and went swimming every day.

Room Tip: Stayed in Ratsey on the ground floor with its own access to the garden, lovely room and handy for th...

We have just returned from our first stay at Moonfleet. It certainly won't be our last. In fact, my three children (aged 5, 7 and 8) and I were so taken with it that we have already re-booked for next summer.

We have stayed in quite a few hotels over the years and most seem to tolerate the children well enough and, normally, provide varying degrees of facilities to distract and take care of them whilst parents get some much needed R&R. This, however, is the first time we have stayed in a hotel that positively embraced having the children there, took care of all their needs, often without even being asked, and made all of us feel extremely welcome, safe and royally entertained from the moment we walked in.

In the areas where it matters most to a family on holiday, they have got it absolutely spot-on. At no point did I feel that the children were in the way, there is more than enough space for them to do their running around and shrieking well away from guests having a quieter time in the restaurant or lounge areas, and the staff were exceptional. As was the menu; breakfast was delicious every morning and I have rarely seen my 3 girls (prone to being slightly fussy, if I'm honest!) wolf so much food at the impressive high teas available. The Den, the tennis lessons, the outdoor games, the indoor swimming pools, the film room, the Veranda, the playroom, the magical walks along the coastal path (with or without sweet Snoopy for company)...we didn't even begin to think about needing day trips for all the 5 days we stayed and that has certainly never happened before.

Yes, some updating and modernisation around the edges will be of benefit, but hopefully not at the expense of Moonfleet's charm and homeliness which are second to none. It has a heart of gold and we can't wait to come back.

A first holiday for us in the UK. Chose Moonfleet Manor as it appeared ideal for young children, 3 and 6 years old. The facilities for the children are excellent, both indoor and out. The staff are very child friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was fine, although we would like to see the menu change as a week with the same menu is a long time.

The rooms are fine, although to describe them as luxurious is a stretch. The hotel is a bit tired overall but a renovation plan is on its way we are told... A gym would be a welcome addition.

Lots to do in the surrounding areas to keep the kids and adults amused. Snoopy, the resident dog, was also a big hit with the kids. Overall, a very good family holiday.

Room Tip: Sir Henry Peto is not for tall people!

Just come back from a two night break and we had a lovely time. Parts of the hotel need a bit of cash injection but on the whole the shabby chic feel did work. I felt like we were staying in a huge house out of a children's novel with great rural views and children running barefoot inside and out. Nothing was too much trouble when it came to our toddlers needs. Bottles were cleaned and warmed for us and I loved the children's buffet. We also used the listening service so we could enjoy the evening and put her to bed. I preferred the rooms in the old part of the house to the new and I would go for the biggest room you can afford. We moved rooms because the first one was too small. The pool needs updating too.

Room Tip: preferred the rooms in the old part of the house to the new and I would go for the biggest room you...

Well appointed family hotel in lovely countryside, Delicious food throughout the day, attentive staff who are very helpful. They also made good recommendations about other places to see, and eat at.
Friendly array of gumboots and buckets and spades to borrow for family outings. Particularly good for young children as masses of play area both inside, for poor weather, and outside in safe garden. Spa services also available for a bit of adult therapy!

Room Tip: We had a couple of nights with a sea view and balcony which was lovely and sunny, and then a night o...

Moonfleet is a magical, atmospheric, family-oriented hotel with bags of character, and wonderful service. Its the perfect place for a holiday with young children, where you can spend time with your kids, and hand them over to the wonderful creche or sunday breakfast club, if you need a couple of hours of peace. The setting is certainly shabby chic and we had wonderful interconnecting rooms with views of the lagoon, two bathrooms, two balconies. For once, we weren't surrounded by bath toys and childrens paraphanalia in our own bath, the kids had their own! The hotel also provided us with all the baby kit we needed, so we could pack light for a change. There are weird and wonderful artifacts everywhere in the hotel, with colonial and African flavours, even the rooms contain weird and wonderful pieces, that you wouldn't
find in a mainstream hotel. The rooms had TV's with DVDs (and a good library downstairs) and wonderful elemis bathroom products to make you feel a little indulged at bathtime. Our
children were whisked away on our first morning, to Breakfast Club, so we had a leisurely morning where we actually had time to get ready for once, and then a lovely peaceful breakfast together. The rooms could do with a guest fridge in them and a separate room service menu, this would make it 5*. We didnt fancy ordering any room service when we were there as it was £10 room charge, which was a bit much. Everyone there seemed to have 1+ children of a variety of ages from very young babies to young children. Many people had come in groups, with grandparents or siblings in tow. The highlight of the hotel has to be the food! The food is exceptional and of a very high quality. On our first night, the wonderful beef carpaccio was followed by a delicious duck confit to die for. We never tired of the food and the Menu du Jour gave us something extra to consider each evening. The staff at Moonfleet are really excellent, especially in the restaurant, nothing is too much trouble. Of note should be the wonderful Sommellier, who was extremely helpful and interesting to talk to. We ended up on the Chablis each evening in the end, and my husband on a very good Red. The Maitre D was also excellent and a charming man. There seems to be
a portugese influence in the food, with a wonderful depth of flavours and a really exciting menu, which was well presented. The breakfasts were fabulous, with a help yourself continental, and then an extensive to order breakfast menu. All the children's cutlery, beakers, and bibs were provided for, which was a big help to us. We sampled afternoon tea as a family, and this was truly wonderful - delicious cakes, scones, and wonderful champagne jelly. The children loved their own afternoon tea with miniature adult things, and delicious chocolate milkshake. There seemed to be a barbecue night on Mondays, which was really good and the skewered prawns and prosciutto wrapped sardines, were to die for. The weather was kind to us and we spent some wonderful afternoons in the garden, following our active toddlers about, and also visited nearby Weymouth beach, which had warm golden sands and a real traditional beach feel to it, with lots of carousels, donkey rides, swings etc. We returned in the afternoon to the children's tea, which was really well done, with an excellent selection of home cooked delicious children's food run by the creche staff, at extremely good value. Our drinks orders were taken during this time (thank the lord), so at least we could have a large glass of wine or pint of beer, to take off the edge of the fractious time of day! We then wandered through to the cavernous soft play area with our glass of wine, which meant we could watch our toddlers tire themselves out into a deliriously tired state, so that we could whisk them off for bedtime, with no fear that they would wake when we were having dinner and using the baby listening service. This soft play area is a real bonus to the hotel. This is an excellent space for a rainy day. The baby listening system worked well, its the first time we've done this. Both our children are in cots and we had them in the same room for the first time. You simply dialled reception and left the phone off the hook, pretty easy really! We felt nervous not having the monitor with us, but confident that the reception were managing this, as we were called up a couple of times during our stay, because of one thing or the other, but this would be usual with our children. We used the creche a couple
of times, especially in the afternoon, between 3-5pm, where we were too tired to follow our children round the garden for the afternoon. Its a fabulous offsted registered creche, which a huge wealth of toys, and they do activities every day, and have a separate outdoor area,
the staff are wonderful in there, and the kids loved their time in there. The swimming pool was also fantastic, and the changing rooms have clearly just been refurbished, and were really clean and suited to large families. There were lots of floats to borrow and it was wonderful to have time to swim as a family with the kids. My husband loved his chesil beers, and I loved my champagne cocktails. The bill was a bit eye watering, but then what do you expect when you have two children, its not the same as life as a couple! The kids didn't want to leave, and we returned refreshed and happy that we had managed to have a wonderful family break away, without having to cook a meal, enabling us to have some much needed time off, and where the kids were able to have a marvellous time too.

Room Tip: The courtyard rooms look the best (two up two down, and private courtyard area outside). Also the vi...

Just back from a four night stay at Moonfleet Manor. Second of the Luxury Family Hotel fleet that we've stayed at and, again, was very impressed. Not cheap in mid-August and if you're not tied to school hols then recommend a visit out of season. Loads for the kids to do, excellent staff, super restaurant and the hotel is in a beautiful location. Only minor criticism was that a few areas could do with sprucing up!
