Wenlock House

Reviewed July 12, 2011

As soon as we opened the door of room 10 we new we would be happy with our stay.
It was bright well decorated and very clean, nice crisp white sheets on the bed the toilet/shower room was very well appointed, with hot water at all times, towels were changed daily.
Car parking is a horror in Weymouth but no problem at the Wenlock.
You will be given a garage to keep your car in and your own key so that you can get it and lock it away again at what ever time you wish.
Another bonus with a garage is no seagulls mess on the car.
Full english breakfast was good and very hot but could do with one more rasher of bacon.
You have a selection of meals for breakfast so the above comment may not bother you.
The location is also very good its right by Weymouths famous clock.
Its no more than a 5 mins level walk to the town and another 2 to the very atractive harbour.
We really enjoyed our stay and will be going back to the Wenlock at another time.

Stayed for four nights, Mum and Dad (80 and 82) and my friend and I, for respite following Mum's major op last winter. What a welcome- warm and pleasant, hosts and staff who couldn't do enough for us. Relaxed immediately. Rooms (7 and 10) and hotel itself very clean, comfortable and restful. Breakfasts varied, and cooked well, served quickly, with every request met quickly and pleasantly. Location central and despite rain and wind, still enjoyed the break -must be glorious in sunshine. Great Italian restaurant and fish and chip restaurant only doors away, cross the road to promenade, sit in the covered bench area and contemplate fabulous arc of the beach, sea view and beautiful sweep of the coastal hills. Loved it, recommend Wenlock House highly with confidence. Many thanks to staff for helping make our break a lovely one, hope to see you again soon.

Room Tip: 7 & 10 quiet and restful, no sea view.

We've stayed at the Wenlock for long weekend breaks for many years. We spend a lot of time in Weymouth and know the area and it's businesses well. The fact that we keep returning here, when Weymouth is full of similar types of accomodation speaks volumes. We always find the family-run atmosphere warm and welcoming, the bedrooms top-notch and comfortable, and the breakfasts served good quality and well cooked / presented (the haddock and eggs is a personal favorite!!).
I'd recommend staying at the Wenlock to anyone wanting to visit Weymouth.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms provide a stunning view of the bay.

We stayed at the wenlock for a night after being on a boating holiday on the norfolk broads. Our room was perfect. Clean & cosy with every thing you needed at hand. On arrival we had a very warm welcome it felt like home from home. After a very comfortable nights sleep, The icing on the cake was the delicious breakfast and ecxellent friendly service from the staff. Would definitely recomend to family and friends.

We felt we had to write this after reading with dismay the review from PG Surrey. Having discovered the Wenlock many years ago we stay there at least four times a year & on occassions our families have stayed as well. It is a small family run hotel & we are made to feel very welcome by the owners and staff. The rooms are fresh clean & spacious. We have stayed in most of the rooms during this time & on our last visit we had the recently renovated large double room beautifully decorated with a lovely seaview all the rooms are highly recommended. Like us many of the people who stay there come back again & again.

BEWARE THE WENLOCK ! ! !
107 The Esplanade, Weymouth Dorset DT4 7EE

Upon arrival at the Wenlock on the 23 August 2010 we were told to fill out a short form detailing the name and address and how many nights stay etc... Owners seemed ok were given room key and made our way upstairs to the family room 2 adults 1 child (9 yrs old). An hour after we entered the room my wife and child started sneezing and coughing and being asthmatic had to use their inhalers. Upon inspection of the room we noticed thick layers of dust on the skirting boards, crumbs and bits on the carpets, dust and hairs on 2 velvet chairs, hairs on the bathroom floor and shower tray, a very dirty hand baisin, yellow stains on every well used towel, a thick layer of dust on the bedside clock radio ,a large patch of damp and mould in the corner wall, the mattress was very lumpy and uncomfortable which had obviously not been changed for many years, the sheets had old stains and tears, the pillows were totally worn out and to top it all off we noticed mouse droppings in parts of the room. Because it was late we had no choice but to sleep in this horrible room number 10.
Breakfast was pretty much as expected after a sleepless night, a very dusty dining room, a full English breakfast with very poor quality sausages and bacon all soaked in oil. Basically we could not eat this so called English Breakfast.
We spent all day out searching for a reasonable hotel as we expected more for out £95 per night but had no joy whatsoever. We experienced another night of misery hoping to locate a hotel anywhere the following day. By that afternoon we managed to find a hotel 30 miles away in Bourmouth and were looking forward to having some sleep and some comforts.
We rang the Wenlock House at 6 PM and politey informed them that we would be leaving the following morning at 10 am.
The following morning the owners demanded money for 3 nights even though we only stayed for 2 nights. We then explained to them that the hotel conditons were not good enough and that the Wenlock House was being falsely advertised as a four star. The owners were offended in hearing this and demanded payment for an addtional night and refused to release our car from their garage until we paid £95 more. No matter what we politely said the owners would not listen to reason, we were mocked and were told that we should have informed them that we were asthma sufferers, they would not even see the room so we could show them our complaints, all we were told for about an hour was that they had some sort of disease and they were not well.
We had no choice but to pay them an extra £95 so our car could be released from their locked garage even thou the room was unsattisfactory, they also remarked that they knew “YOU PEOPLE” would have issues, we took this as a racist remark as our surname is foreign.
Having stayed in many Hotels around the country we would say the Wenlock is by far the worst.

I would like to take this opportunity to comment on the review submitted by PG of Surrey.

Obviously P G's comments are governed by his own subjectiveness. In defence of the Wenlock I would just like to say that we have attained AA 4 diamond wards continuously for several years now and these are not given lightly. Upon inspection following P G's visit it was noticed that the only signs of dust appeared to originate from damage caused by an occupier of the room pulling the television wall-mount away from the wall. As for mouse droppings, we are regularly inspected by the local council officers and have had no problems with rodent infestation. If P G had discovered such I am sure, given his overall comments, he would have reported it to the environmental health authority.

I can assure prospective guests that soft furnishings are renewed on a regular basis and rooms are redecorated every year or two depending on usage.

The comments on the breakfast are, once again, subjective and we have had no complaints other than that of P G.

Regarding the stay itself, P G booked over the phone for 4 nights. It is normal for ourselves, as well as many other small businesses, for short stays such as this to pay upon arrival – in fact our guest registration card highlights this. For whatever reason P G was unable to comply with this request and arranged to “pay later”. The booking for 4 nights, it must be said, would not normally have been accepted at what is one of the peak holiday weeks of the season, preference being for complete weeks which is the norm for a seaside town in the middle of summer. Comments about the accommodation only commenced after the second night. P G must have been very lucky to have located an alternative in Bournemouth. By curtailing his visit with minimal notice P G effectively prevented us from re-letting the room in peak season. If he had genuine issues and evidence of such with costs and service provided he has the option of small claims court. There was never any racism as we do not tolerate it and P G's opinion of the events appear that something was said that was taken out of context. Regarding the car, if P G had paid as requested there would have been no issue.

We pride ourselves in offering a high standard of accommodation and service and are disappointed that P G was unable to reconcile the situation at the time of his stay but has found the time to produce a somewhat vindictive review to Tripadvisor. I do hope that other guests can find the time to add their comments
