We spent one night here in early June on our way home from Devon. It was meant to be one night in a luxury boutique hotel after a couple of nights in a B&B in Appledore.
The location was great - at the far end of the Weymouth Esplanade with the beach just across the road in front and the Georgian inner harbour right behind. Our first floor room was double aspect with stunning view of the whole of the curve of the seafront and a glimpse of the harbour to the rear. The room was big but the shower was small. We had a huge double bed - marred by its overfirm mattress and a slight slope on the floor that made you feel your feet were below your head! It had huge plasma screen TV - clearly the room was aimed at people who were going to spend their time in bed watching TV!
However, at £165 a night I was expecting a better bed and better attention to detail. Although the Austrian lady owner was very welcoming little things let the side down. We had a proliferation of neatly rolled towels waiting for us on the bed but only one dressing gown. The details for the wi-fi connection were meant to be in a little decorative card holder on the dressing table and when I went downstairs and asked her how to connect to the wi-fi - I was told there was a card on the dressing table. When I said it wasn't there she then came up said - well it was there when the previous occupant was here. She then fetched one from another room. OK only a small point but if you are charging top prices you should be checking details like this before your guests arrive.
Other minor gripes. The ceiling and one wall was in bare new pink plaster. Apparently this is how georgian rooms were meant to be dressed. And the whole of the front was covered in scaffolding which marred the appearance and the view. Ok - I appreciate that these old buildings need to be maintained but it is clear from Google streetview that the scaffolding has been there for some time.
One final issue. We made it clear to the manager that we were going out for dinner. We weren't amused to come back at 10pm to find ourselves locked out. Our one key did not operate the front foor and no amount of bell ringing and door bashing could attract the owner's attention in her second floor room. Finally we rang the hotel phone and managed to get her to open the door! Had she checked our room or looked out at the front she would have seen the room was empty and we were out!
To end on a positive note - the breakfast was very nice - generous helpings of fruit salad, cereals, the usual hot food choices, croissants etc - and we got a nice welcoming cup of coffee on our arrival.
But at £165 it seems out of line with the many very good B&Bs and boutique hotels we have stayed at in pricier places like Brighton. Had it been £100 we would have thought it reasonable.
