“Curate's egg - good in parts!”
Reviewed June 10, 2012

We spent one night here in early June on our way home from Devon. It was meant to be one night in a luxury boutique hotel after a couple of nights in a B&B in Appledore.

The location was great - at the far end of the Weymouth Esplanade with the beach just across the road in front and the Georgian inner harbour right behind. Our first floor room was double aspect with stunning view of the whole of the curve of the seafront and a glimpse of the harbour to the rear. The room was big but the shower was small. We had a huge double bed - marred by its overfirm mattress and a slight slope on the floor that made you feel your feet were below your head! It had huge plasma screen TV - clearly the room was aimed at people who were going to spend their time in bed watching TV!

However, at £165 a night I was expecting a better bed and better attention to detail. Although the Austrian lady owner was very welcoming little things let the side down. We had a proliferation of neatly rolled towels waiting for us on the bed but only one dressing gown. The details for the wi-fi connection were meant to be in a little decorative card holder on the dressing table and when I went downstairs and asked her how to connect to the wi-fi - I was told there was a card on the dressing table. When I said it wasn't there she then came up said - well it was there when the previous occupant was here. She then fetched one from another room. OK only a small point but if you are charging top prices you should be checking details like this before your guests arrive.

Other minor gripes. The ceiling and one wall was in bare new pink plaster. Apparently this is how georgian rooms were meant to be dressed. And the whole of the front was covered in scaffolding which marred the appearance and the view. Ok - I appreciate that these old buildings need to be maintained but it is clear from Google streetview that the scaffolding has been there for some time.

One final issue. We made it clear to the manager that we were going out for dinner. We weren't amused to come back at 10pm to find ourselves locked out. Our one key did not operate the front foor and no amount of bell ringing and door bashing could attract the owner's attention in her second floor room. Finally we rang the hotel phone and managed to get her to open the door! Had she checked our room or looked out at the front she would have seen the room was empty and we were out!

To end on a positive note - the breakfast was very nice - generous helpings of fruit salad, cereals, the usual hot food choices, croissants etc - and we got a nice welcoming cup of coffee on our arrival.

But at £165 it seems out of line with the many very good B&Bs and boutique hotels we have stayed at in pricier places like Brighton. Had it been £100 we would have thought it reasonable.

thank you for your review. i think it is always interesting to read a review from a guests point of view.
we have 2 rooms with oversized mattresses as we also have guest which require this size as they are not used to sleep in king size ore double size beds (european..usa) and i think it is better to sleep in a large bed as in a to small one. the mattresses are medium firm and have a downfeather topping. also as we all use pillows...... a pillow always puts your had up and your feet are lower than your head. this building is built in 1860 so maybe the floor is towards the center of the room about 3cm lower.
i am sorry about the key.... as soon you called i immediately opened the door........there is scaffolding up...but in your room to the harbour side is no scaffolding and the window to the sea does not show any scaffolding....as we kept the view open......
we do have 5 rooms and offer breakfast till sometimes 11.00am. to the prize complain i would like to say....you are paying for VAT/ Commission/Breakfast and Service/Linnenservice/Cleaning not only the Room etc/after all of this expenses there is very little left for Rent/Utilities and Furnishing. it is a business of love otherwise you would not choose to be the owner of a small BB.... the reward of the end of the year is not that great also...so after all we are doing this job to please the guests as much we can but we cannot please everybody......i am sorry that you where not happy staying at the roundhouse weymouth.

Stayed for two nights in May. The location is excellent, walking distance to everything Weymouth has to offer. The rooms are large, the beds are huge and comfortable. The fittings are stylish and everything finished to a high standard. My partner especially liked 'boutique' furnishings. The rooms, dining room and bar all very clean. The breakfast is fresh and cooked with high quality ingredients, fresh bread was available every morning. Eva (hopefully spelt correctly), the land lady is very friendly and helpful. On the second morning she remember which of us liked fruit / boiled eggs and had the table set ready, which was a nice touch. She also provide me with as bacon as I could eat, which is a lot!!

Would highly recommend this B and B when visiting Weymouth, easily one of the best I have stayed in.

We booked the Roundhouse Hotel for 10 people for a hen-do in mid May and we weren't disappointed. Eva went out of her way to cater for our every need and the hotel couldn't have been nicer. The rooms were spacious, stylish and immaculate. The views were breathtaking from every room. The hen-do was a huge success and I will forever be grateful to Eva. We will be back! xx

We had a brilliant stay at the Roundhouse! Eva is a lovely host and very welcoming. The room we stayed in had a great view towards both, the harbour and the beach. It was nicely decorated, well thought-out with a plush, boutique-hotel feeling about it. The bathroom was modern and clean, with toiletries, fluffy towels and a robe. Plenty of choice on the tea tray and free mineral water. The breakfast was excellent, made to order to your choice and the freshly baked bread was divine! There even were fresh croissants and fruit. Out of season parking wasn't a problem and we could keep the parking permit for a few hours after we checked out. Overall it was a great stay and everything throughout was the same high standard up to the last detail. We will come back!

We have just returned from a wonderful two night stay at The Roundhouse. We are regular visitors to the Weymouth area but have never actually stayed in town due to a) wanting to keep away from the crowds and b) the lack of quality accommodation. Having come across The Roundhouse on the internet we decided to make an exception as it was out of season. We were not disappointed and will definitely re-book when we are visiting out of season again. The room we had was very large and perfectly furnished with double aspect windows overlooking both the harbour and the quay. Personally I could have spent the whole time sitting on the chaise longue gazing out of the window! Eva the owner is very welcoming and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Her breakfasts are amazing. The only minor downside is it can be slightly noisy from the traffic outside but bearing in mind this is the middle of Weymouth, what do you expect, plus I always sleep with the window wide open!
