“Very poor service and rude staff”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

A party of 6 of us recently dined at "Lodge on the Loch" at Aboyne and we certainly will not be returning due to the extremely poor attitude of the staff. When we arrived and asked to be seated outside it was plain to see that this was a great inconvenience for the waitress who preferred us to sit inside as it was too "windy" outside (despite it being 20 degrees and glorious sunshine). The place was totally empty when we arrived and by the time we left there were only 2 other people dining, despite this it took 30 mins for us to be served our drinks. Whilst ordering the waitress was clearly bored of taking our order (huffing and puffing), it was almost as if we were inconveniencing the staff by being there as customers. We overheard a couple arrive just for drinks (they were not dining), and the barman asked them to sit outside on a small table just incase a big party arrived for food, so rude! We were astounded that the barman said this when it was obvious the place was completely deserted apart from our party of 6 and 2 others. In addition to this, my husband went for a look on the balcony to see the loch and was promptly followed by the barman and asked to refrain from wandering around the balcony as it was a "residents area". Added to the appalling attitude of the staff is the quality of the food which was extremely average (pub grub) yet the prices bear resemblance to a good quality bistro. The food looked and tasted like it had been prepared well in advance and heated up in a microwave, not freshly made. The building is in a beautiful location, shame the attitude of the staff and quality of the food doesn't match it.

This was our second visit to the Lodge having stayed there previously 2 years ago. Sometimes when you return to a place you liked you are disappointed, as it wasn't quite as good as you remembered. But that was most certainly not the case with our return to the Lodge on the Loch of Aboyne last week; It was even better!

We just love everything about this place; from the stunningly beautiful location, to the excellent facilities & expert treatments available in the Spa, the lovely private golf course and the very comfortable room we had overlooking the Loch. The food in the restaurant is also of a high standard - with a wide choice of breakfast and an interesting dinner menu that's worth staying in for.

However the best thing of all is the wonderful Scottish Hospitality provided by the owners & creators of the Lodge - Derek & Jean plus their small band of helpers. They are (quite rightly) very proud of what they have created and everything they have to offer and just want their guests to enjoy the unqiue experience of staying there to the full, (Jean does most of the work & Derek takes most of the credit - although his knowledge of Malt Whiskies more than makes up for it..) This is by no means an ordinary place to stay; a truly unique experience,
We'll be back! Richard & Lesley.

Spent an overnight spa break with my daughter taking following several days heavy gardening. Despite the weather the views of the loch were still amazing.
Room very clean and comfortable. Spa facilities excellent, made use of the outdoor hot tub even in the rain!
Jean very attentive, making sure we were happy during our stay. She does a really good back and back massage.
Fresh good quality breakfast cooked to order in the morning. Would stay again and would recommend if you are looking for a peaceful location to get away from it all.

5 stars for location and kind staff, for the breakfast as well. Very convenient place to stay if you want to go both to the coast (North of Aberdeen), to the Crampian mountains, and to sites close to Aberdeen in general. May be not the best place for little children, but for ours (semi-adults) it was perfect.

I travelled from Aberdeen to stay at the Lodge on the loch recently

From the moment I got there I felt that I was invading somebodys home. I found that the couple who ran the place were abrupt and just want to take your money and process you around straight away.

We did not get assistance with maps or location advise from the manager, in actual fact he was quite rude.
Both he and the lady manager obviosuly missed the courtesy lesson on the hotel management course.

We were told by the lady manager that when we got in that this establishement was not a "Hotel", well we were paying 140 pounds a night for a room, but we did not get a breakfast as we got up 5 mins too late on Sunday morning.

I would not go back there.

Even though the location is beautiful, the staff and the efforts made in the lodge were off-putting.

Room Tip: Check the Huntly arms for availability.

i stayed on the 17th July, after a long long day driving from Chester, then working all afternoon in Aberdeen. The beautiful view from my room, allied with a decked area outside my french windows made me relax very quickly.
The food was fresh and hot, the wine list adequate (no Chardonnay as of yet!), and the staff very friendly but unobtrusive.
The room and bathroom was absolutely spotless and put many large chains to shame with their standards of cleanliness at times and i had the best nights sleep for a long long time whilst travelling.
Give the hotels in Aberdeen a miss and drive for 45 minutes - well worth it for the views and tranquility alone!

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view

We arrived Aboyne by bicycle from Aberdeen. The Dee Way is wonderful to cycle, but after 60 kilometre we where happy to reach our hotel. We had booked a private sauna, thinking it would be good after a long day on a bicycle. The sauna were a junior suite with sauna, steam shower and a bath tube, and combined with luxury robes and candles, we had in fact our private spa. And from the room we had a beautiful view over the sea.
The restaurant have good food. Not extraordinary, but freshly made. The staff are friendly, and the vine list are great. A really lovely place to stay.
