Glen Tanar
Reviewed April 4, 2012

We have just come back from 3 nights in the West Millfield Cottage on the Glen Tanar Estate and i can't recommend it enough. For amazing scenery, comfortable surroundings, peace and quiet, it is the place to come. We can strongly say that if the cottage was for sale we would buy it in a flash as we didn't want to leave. It has all the mod cons of a family home and very comfortable beds. The cottage was also spotless and done up beautifully. This is our second time to the estate, last year we stayed in the Garden Cottage and the same goes. We will definitely be returning especially for the flapjacks.
There is loads to do on the estate and surrounding areas but if you just want to chill and enjoy the scenery then this is the place to come.

We have just returned from a fantastic family wedding at Glen Tanar Estate. We stayed Friday to Monday in the Garden Cottage which is simply stunning. We would strongly recommend staying here to anyone wishing to visit Royal Deeside.

We stayed here for a week to attend a nephew's wedding in Glen Tanar Ballroom and St Lasmo's Chapel. The wedding arrangements were very good (except this was our only wet day!) Rowan Cottage is small and comfortable with all mod cons - satellite wi-fi, TV and DVD player. Bed linen, towels, heating, etc., are all provided along with tea, coffee, milk, etc. The co-op supermarket in Aboyne has everything. The hotel in Dinnet is only a mile's walk away and appears to do nice dinners and bar food. We only had drinks. Our relatives stayed in Wood End and Garden House which both are larger and more sumptuously appointed. Rowan Cottage is ideal for two. The Glen Tanar Estate is vast with plenty of walks and mountain biking opportunities. Ballater is a lovely little town about seven miles walk away along the old railway line which goes through the woods alongside the River Dee. Well recommended. There are frequent buses back to Dinnet and Aboyne. All the cottages are supplied with maps and information packs. Glen Tanar can be thoroughly recommended. One minor negative point is the estate roads are not made up and may be difficult for low slung vehicles.

Thank you for your great review. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Rowan got out to explore other parts of Deeside.

With regards to the track up to Rowan, this is an ongoing battle with heavy rain washing the track out and causing pot holes. We are looking into the best options to stop the continuous return of pot holes and hope that soon they will be fixed permanently.

The Garden Cottage was absolutely great, everything about it was first class and it was lovely to sit in an evening in front of the log burner. The area was outstanding we walked and visited the local towns but it was always a pleasure to return to the cottage. Liz's larder was also excellent the good was delivered direct to the door and as good as any restaurant. We will return.

I stayed in the Garden Cottage on the Glen Tanar estate. This was a newly renovated cottage and it was an extremely pleasant place to stay. The food available from Liz's Larder was also excellent.
