“chilly pub”

Our visit to this lakeland hostelry, tucked quietly out of the way, promised a warm welcome on a cold wintry day. However, we were disappointed to find on entering that the wonderful open fire had not an ember glowing and consequently the room and atmosphere was decidly cold. The home made soup and sandwich was fine, but we left quickly to the warmth of our car. A welcoming fire would have made all the difference, creating a cosy atmosphere that would have tempted us to stay longer, and spend more!

“Probably the best open fire in Cumbria.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

The night we visited was when England played Poland and there was also a darts competition on.
Friendly landlord and regulars who was happy to banter with my friend who is Scottish and was supporting Poland.
The food was good with home made chips and home baked steak and kidney pie.

“Very poor”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

We visited this pub after reading the comments on Trip advisor and the pubs own website and I have to say we were very disappointed. The food was poor and not good value, the pool table needed cleaning, the juke box whined and the place looked very tired.

Hi,

The Three Greyhounds inn has recently undergone a change in ownership and management. We strongly believe your review no longer reflects the standard withheld in our establishment.

We hope you may return to the three greyhounds and be pleasantly surprised by our work.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

Visited with my in-laws and family.

The pub had a large number of family eating; it was difficult for us to find a large table for our party of five.

There was a choice of local beers which was good.

It was let down by the food experience; they didn't have our choice of starters (although that may mean everything is cooked fresh and consequently supplies are limited); my main course (scampi and chips) was perfectly edible, although nothing special. However, my father-in-law's meal was a disaster (meat pie); it was over cooked and rubbery: it was sent back to be recooked, but the second attempted was still inedible.

The lady apologised and did not charge for my father-in-laws food and explained that this was the first time it had happened; we left without having a desert. Even though this was the local public house to our holiday cottage we did not return.

“Nice country pub with good home-cooked food and friendly landlord”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2013

Great Asby is a lovely little unspoilt village just off the Orton-Appleby road in Westmorland. The pub is an unspoilt simple country pub serving well kept cask beers and home cooked food, mostly fresh, at reasonable prices. There is parking around the village for motorhomes and/or caravans but don't try and find one during Appleby Horse Fair!
If you are touring or staying in the area its well worth a visit.
