“3.5. Restaurant only. Good food, nice enough ambience but forgetful service”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

Nice setting in a very pretty town. Somehow it feels like it needs a facelift although it is clean and tidy. The dining room is surprisingly large and airy if a bit soulless. The food was good; delicate, modest portions, nicely presented. But the service while friendly was a bit forgetful. We were the last table to be seated and the staff became busy preparing for the next day while we waited to be cleared and shown the desert menu. Reasonable value. I would definitely give it another chance if in area

We stayed here as part of a KGB deal and I was pleasantly surprised once I got inside. The outside looks a bit tired and I probably wouldn't have looked at it twice.
However the service was friendly, the rooms were clean, bright and airy and it is in a very good location.
We ate in the restaurant on the second night and the food was of a good quality - no complaints at all.
The only off putting thing of the entire weekend was the family with unruly kids who were not controlled in any way - running down corridors screaming and climbing out of fire escapes is not how I would let my children behave but the management were more than understanding when we decided against eating in the restaurant on the first night due to the kids running round and ensured we booked on the second night when the family had left.

I was breaking my journey after an entire day behind the wheel from Oxford to Glasgow and back [as far as Appleby]. The Tufton Arms was perfect - easy to find - easy to park - easy and welcoming check in - and a more than adequate room with an excellent shower and very comfortable bed. I had booked online, including dinner and breakfast. Dinner was excellent with a top notch creme brulee to round it off. If only the stair carpet would wear out and be replaced by something less swirly and contemporary.

Room Tip: If making a solo trip - Room 19 is perfect. Quiet and comfortable

We stayed here on a voucher deal so the weekend was very good value. The décor is a little dated as previously mentioned however our room was clean, bright and quite large. We had a room overlooking the market square so it was great for people watching, but a little noisy on an evening when the pubs were emptying; having said this we both slept very well!
The food at breakfast and in the restaurant of an evening was very tasty and well priced.
All the staff we encountered were courteous and efficient, including the younger staff who were in the restaurant on the Friday evening.

We arrived at the Tufton Arms' very quiet restaurant on a bank holiday Monday. We were already quite grateful that they had allowed us to book at 8:30 (they officially stop serving at 9 on a Monday), but on top of this we were running late and felt rather guilty turning up at 8:45. To top it off we hadn't realised that to access the restaurant by wheelchair you have to go round the back and down the side alley. So when we finally sat at our table it was probably after 9pm.

This was not a problem for the staff, however, who made us all feel very welcome, offered to take our photo (we were on holiday), and we were even offered dessert despite the fact the kitchen staff were probably itching to get home. We didn't opt for desserts but our main meals were very tasty. I had the chicken with leeks and mashed potato. This dish was delicious, in particular the sauce, which I think was mushroom based. The rest of my table were very satisfied with their lamb, sirloin steak and scampi. Overall we were impressed with the food and service and would recommend to others.

Just what we needed straight food with good service. The decor is a little dated but the bar was comfortable and they looked after us as a family well. The meals were cooked fresh and they catered well for the children. The deserts were fab. It was so good we went there twice in a week whilst staying at centre parcs.

First off, the food was actually exceptional as was the wine. But the service seemed to lack it's usual standard. The team seemed to be younger and less experienced than usual and the normal warm welcome I expect at the Tufton, seemed to be lacking substantially. In fairness to the Hotel there was a shooting party staying but we got the impression they were somehow given priority.

Nestled in the medieval town of Appleby, just outside the Lake District and 15 minutes from the M6, this intimate family-run hotel offers excellent food, in its relaxed newly refurbished bar areas and in the Conservatory Restaurant. We are a fish restaurant and have developed an enviable reputation for dishes such as Gumbo's, Chowders, Goan Fish curries, Fresh Mussels (3 different ways), Cajun Prawns and Calamari, and our constantly changing fish specials all fresh daily from Neves in Fleetwood. We still have our traditional sources of great beef and Cumbrian lamb on a grill menu so meat eaters are not left out! Originally a 16th Century coaching inn, it was rebuilt in the Victorian times and is now a Grade II listed building. It blends both the contemporary and the classical creating an atmosphere that reflects the traditional charms of the past as well as the sophisticated elegance of the present. With stylish soft furnishings, heaped cushions, deep sofas, polished wooden floors and open fires its homely comforts are further completed by warm and friendly hospitality and free wi-fi.
