“A Pleasant Weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

This was probably our fifth visit to the Tufton, a nice hotel which is a mix of old world with modern facilities. We purchased a spring voucher (for the first time), so our visit was even better value for money. As always the staff are friendly, the hotel is relaxing, the food and wine are excellent and we will be back next year.

Room Tip: If you do get a choice of rooms, try to get either 12 or 14, we have always stayed in these rooms an...

Like a reviewer further down, we only ate here and didn't stay - not sure why their The Tufton isn't shown separately as a restaurant as well but anyway..

We had a really enjoyable meal here, 3 courses each plus one and a half bottles of wine (Malbec and Gavi) for about £90, whic we thought was reasonable.

We asked to change a couple of the offerings and this was no problem at all for the restauarant staff, they were helpful without being over attentive. We both had sirloin steaks - provided by the local butcher next door - for our main and they were cooked just as requested and good quality.

A large menu to suit all tastes, would definitely return.

Oh and a special mention to the ever friendly Sita on reception, bar and restaurant duties - a constantly helpful young lady.

Thank you very much for the positive comments especially on the food and service. As I look after our ever growing wine list and wine shop it was great that you found and liked the Gavi di Gavi from Piedmont!

On seeing the staircase and corridors we were a bit dubious about the place but the rooms were lovely and bathrooms very new and modern. Restaurant food absolutely excellent although serving staff obliging but not friendly - looked like they didn't enjoy their jobs!

Stayed one night here with a colleague, the rooms were booked by our head office. The hotel is in the middle of the village and parking was a problem although we manged to get a place in the small hotel car park, of members of our group weren't as lucky . They were given a parking disc but had to either leave before eight or buy a parking ticket. As breakfast was not till 0730 a couple of our guys had to rush.
The room was small but newly decorated/ converted it only had a shower although for me it was fine. The bed was good and the roof top view was interesting.
I'm afraid being typicaly English I didn't complain when really I should've, both radiators the one in the room and the other in the shower room were stone cold except for the bottom inch they were obviously in need of bleeding. The one in the bedroom gurgled so I had to get up and turn it off during the night. Others in my party also heard a ticking noise coming from the heating some attention is required I feel.
The food was good and well presented the service was excellent, breakfast was the normal spread nice to see smoked haddock on the menu.
Would I stay again I'd probably try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the end of the corridor, I was woken by some one leaving early (0530)

Must start by saying in an old fashioned hotel I expect quirky shaped rooms, old staircases , winding corridors, sash windows ,however as the hotel is in the Fine Hotels chain I was still slightly disappointed . The room was a little jaded , very hot as ventilation was limited - if window open too much then noise from the car park on the road outside was excessive , the worst part of the room was the water pressure which meant that the shower was rendered useless.
The meal at the hotel, included in the price was v good in the evening ,the breakfast- didn't have cooked breakfast so can't comment , the " continental " selection was a little limited , probably as most have cereals then on to the cooked food ?
Staff very pleasant throughout .
Car Park - bit of a challenge for a large car !
Price - if on a room only basis I would say it's on the high side, if meals are included then it's reasonable .

Room Tip: Presume rooms not facing main road are quieter ?

Booked this through itson hotel was nice and cosy staff very polite and helpful, breakfast was good with a nice selection evening meal was a bit pricey for what I had(sirloin)at £18.99 but tasty, nice and comfy bed and clean rooms we also had the upgrade to a suite (No.2 The Colonel Honeywell the only downside was the young ones on the Friday night with their singing outside the pubs and loud exhausts pipes making the window frames rumble till 2.30am so never got much sleep seems its like that most weekend nights ah well suppose they need their fun too so avoid at weekends or get a room at the rear, nice walks and easy access to train and bus services I would certainly visit again for a nice relaxing 3 days or should I say 2 days but not the hotels fault .

Room Tip: Take a room at the rear if visiting at weekends .
