We stayed for one night and the bedroom/bathroom was very clean and the price was very reasonable. We did not have an evening meal as we were booked elsewhere but the restaurant was very busy and the menu had a great choice and what we saw of the food it looked really good so we will most definitely be staying again to sample the food, also they had a choice of 3 real ales which were very good and my wife pointed out to me that they had a good wine choice.
The breakfast was of high quality and all the staff are all friendly and efficient.

Visited here for an evening meal, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. The meals we chose were excellent, freshly prepared, hot, plentiful and very tasty. The pub served some lovely real ales from Hawkshead, and also had Pendle Witch on. All in great condition. Nice fire blazing in the bar, and although it was only 6pm on a Sunday, very busy with customers and residents. A very nice old pub, looks like a former coaching house, attractive and historic, and obviously very popular. A really nice evening.

Extremely pleasant atmospheric Inn. Every staff member seemed to engage pleasantly with the clients, and sympathetically fulfilled client requests, or could answer queries. Accomodation exceeded expectations and the food was similarly of a very high standard -freshly cooked, well presented and generous portions. very clean, well maintained and welcoming. Decor modern but sympathetic to the 17th century building.

Room Tip: Take what is available, Everyone we met thought they had the nicest room.

we recently stayed one night at the royal oak, our bedroom was very nice as were the bar and dining area. the food was excellent. my only criticism of the hotel and restaurant would be that it requires some background music and although the staff were very efficient they did not engage themselves with the customers

We only stayed for one night but enjoyed it enough to want to return. The staff were warm, cheery and chatty –– with the exception of one grumpy young man who, perhaps, is a member of the family who owns the place and resented having to work there. The owners were present but we got the feeling they were distracted by something or other, because they showed no interest in any of the customers, which presented a bit of a clash with the rest of our experience. We loved the unique style of our room and its green-lit bathroom; the building has been decorated with a lot of imagination and hasn't lost its 17th-century feeling. There was an inter-pub domino contest the night we were there and we ended up being invited to join in, which was a bit of a laugh. Dinner was good, the beer was great and we felt very welcome. I'm happy to put the small negative vibe down to a family issue on the day, and we'd definitely go back for another stay.

We stayed here on a living social deal & chose it in particular because we could take our dog with us. We only stayed for one night and we were really happy with the accommodation. Our room was lovely & there was a little welcome pack for our pooch which was a nice touch. My only minor grumble is that my booking confirmation clearly stated, and I quote "bottle of quality house wine if dining" so we booked to eat in the pub. When we were seated at our table we were given a selection of menus, one of which was titled living social set menu - 3 courses for £22. When I queried this I was told categorically that we would only get the wine if ordering from the set 3 course menu. I again checked my booking confirmation & there were definitely no stipulations so I felt a bit mislead about this although I will follow this up with living social in case it was their error? Anyway, minor grumble over, The Royal Oak is a lovely place to stay and would make a good base for exploring the North Lakes. Breakfast was delicious and the shower in our room (Room 1) was probably the best I've had in anywhere I've stayed in ages so lots of good points!
