Had a lovely time here at the Sandford Arms for a Birthday treat at end of March 2013. Friendly bar staff, fantastic breakfasts, lovely peaceful village (which is worth exploring). We liked the fact it was easy to get to the other parts of the Lake District easily (despite the snow!) and really liked Kirkby Stephen which is 10 mins away. We ate here both evenings and the food was good for meat eaters but more limited for vegetarians. I left my cardigan behind and the owners were kind enough to return this to me free of charge.

Room Tip: we stayed in the large double suite above the dining room, this is a lovely room and probably one of the nicest however, we did notice it was noisier when the dining room downstairs was in use on one night (Sun)

We spent the weekend hear and had a lovely couple of nights. We arrived before check in time and it took a while to find someone to help us but when we did they were very friendly and helpful and had no problem with us checking in early.

The room was lovely, very clean with modern decor, was a good size and had a good ensuite. Especially clean considering that the hotel is dog friendly, we saw no sign of this in the room.

The breakfast was very good, cooked to order and exactly what we needed to start the day. We ate in the restaurant on the first night. The food was great, I had steak and ale pie and my girlfriend had the fish pie. Both were delicious but we couldn't get close to finishing the fish pie between us! We had planned for 3 courses but there was no way we could manage a dessert! We ate out the second night but left room came back to the hotel for dessert, we both had chocolate fudge cake, which was exactly as it should be... Nothing spectacular, but still very tasty.

Would recommend both the hotel and the restaurant to everyone, just be prepared for the large portions and don't stay here if you want to be in the middle of the action, it is in a small hamlet a few miles from Appleby. Well worth the drive tho, in some lovely countryside. Take the scenic routes along the back-roads and across the moors, a beautiful part of the country.

A wee gem and we have stayed in lots of places. Very dog friendly too, and we have an anti allergy breed as I am allergic, and usually can still have a bit of a reaction in dog friendly accommodation but I didnt here, it must be cleaned very thoroughly. The eating areas are set up to seperate the dogs which we found brill too so it was like a home away from home. Food was amazing and lovely friendly service too. We will recommend, and be back :-)

My sister and I stayed at The Sandford Arms in March 2013 and were very impressed. The owners and staff were very welcoming and friendly and our twin room was warm, comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. The ensuite bathroom was exceptionally clean and provided us with some nice extras. We particularly enjoyed the food and stayed for dinner both evenings.Breakfast was great - possibly the best we've had at a B&B.

We have just returned from a two night stay booked through Groupon, and we were very impressed. A lovely old inn dating back to 1722 with a beamed ceiling and a very nice dining area.
The food cooked by the landlord was wonderful and although we were on a bed and breakfast booking we ate in each night so no drinking and driving. We were in the cottage room which was big, beautifully clean with a lovely new bathroom which sparkled. Sandford village is only 4 miles from the market town of Appleby and near Penrith and the Lake District. So plenty of places to visit nearby. We certainly hope to return.

Room Tip: People with walking difficulties may prefer the cottage room to save climbing the stairs.
