On arrival we thought there would not be much to see as the castle is a ruin. However, we were pleasantly surprised once we got inside the grounds. Fascinating insight into how the castle once was, with some great views. Disappointing that some of the information boards were worn and at times difficult to read. You can buy a guide book for £2.99, but we didn't as we had already paid £9 entrance fee for 2 of us. Worth a visit and Barnard Castle itself is a lovely place.

Although it is a bit of a ruin it is well worth a visit if only to see the views across the Tees Valley, it is run by English Heritage and I think you would be disappointed paying the entrance fee if you were not a member

A very interesting town, cheap parking, a good size to walk round and see some interesting independent shops and cafes.

We never paid the £4.50 to get in here, we didn't really think it was worth the fee as you can walk into the entrance and get a good idea of what is left of the interior of the castle: not very much!, we opted for a walk around the perimeter path outside below the ramparts, got some fab photographs, the sun was shining, the sky was blue... is this England?? - Barnard Castle town is well worth a visit, full of quirky shops and extremely friendly people!!. Go there and spend your £4.50 in the cake shop next to St Mary's church ( ghoulish skeletal carvings there which I loved! ).
