A site & area for an absorbing and educational day out - drag the kids there. As one of the 60 most important towns in England the main streets are a wealth of architectural heritage & contain many interesting shops. The adjacent castle is worth a snoop and Bowes Museum is unmissable.

Barnard Castle has everything for a day out, the castle for culture, or bowes museum, lovely cafes, small independent shops - excellent for Christmas shopping, lovely walks by the river. Definitely worth a visit.

I didn't really discover the North East until a few years ago and 'found' Barnard Castle even later. I can't immediately explain its appeal except to say that it's a town of contrasts and you literally never know what you are going to find around the next corner. My wife and I love Chris Mouncey's art gallery and the antiques centre on the hill - not to mention Penny's tea shop. On our most recent visit, we took friends to share our interest in the town and found it extremely difficult to get them out of the DIY and general goods emporium near the car park. The whole town is well worth a visit. We think it's wonderful.

This market town has some good points like the local butchers, fish and chip shops, some decent pubs but some below average. Two good Indian Restaurants but one over priced (Spice Island) and smallish portions on our visit. No Italian Restaurants in the town and a lack of good pub food in general. On a lighter note if you like a very good traditional pint in a pub that is a throughback to how working pubs used to be then try The Commercial. Don't worry about first impressions we went in numerous times and found the locals in there very friendly, very funny and very helpful. It reminded us of what local pubs used to be like back in the 70's & 80's - happy days on Black Sheep & Cumberland bitter, so don't be afraid to try it we had lots of laughs in there.
