The Teashop is the sort of place you granny would take you to as a treat, the menu is stuck in a timewarp and the service is slooow but for all that I like to go once in awhile. There is something nice about a place that knows where it stands provides good quality well cooked traditional English food, has beautifully polished oak tables and a roaring open fire.

Its not trendy its not hip but it is somehow 'real' and is a refreshing change from all 'tasting menus' and pan fried squid ect

We went to Barnard Castle in January for an afternoon's drive and stopped off at The Market Tearoom to warm up and to have a snack. We ordered a pot of Earl Grey tea for 2, a Welsh rarebit each (one slice of bread with melted cheese) and a vanilla slice. I’d like to say that we enjoyed what we had, but we didn’t, and were shocked to be charged over £13. The vanilla slice was stale as well and if we hadn’t been so hungry we would have left it.

On the Tea Guild Members Website it said “prices are reasonable” at The Market Place Tearoom, well I’m afraid I disagree. I think in anybody’s book, £7 is highly excessive for 2 slices of cheese on toast. I wrote to the owners telling them about our disappointment and haven't heard a thing back from them. I would steer clear of this place as it is very expensive and not very good quality food.
