This church is a real surprise. Look out for the carved white rabbit which is said to have inspired Lewis Carroll. Some beautiful other sculpture. The ceiling is also amazing.
Beautiful glass, most of it is mid Victorian.
Some interesting tombstones laid into the floor.
Very helpful volunteers to provide information and guidance.
A really pleasant surprise, recommend a visit. No fee.

What a wonderful find - totally unexpected. This is a fascinating building with great history inside and out - a blast. Thanks to 'Jo' (I think) who was entertaining with her information and happy to spend time with us.

In any other town this church would be feted with compliments for its size and beauty. That it is overshadowed by the Minster should not distract from its atmosphere of calm spirituality despite it being bounded on two sides by busy roads. Well worth a visit to investigate its charms.

A vicar and his wife were visiting us from further north so we met in Beverley. As he is interested in church history and architecture, I took them to St Mary's Church and we were fortunate that it was a quiet time so the most obliging caretaker let us see places for which one usually has to make an appointment. It had a mention on the TV programme "QI" as it has the earliest maiden's garland (or crant) known to exist from 1680. It has a statue of the White Rabbit that inspired Lewis Carroll. It has mediaeval misericords. It has galaxies on the ceiling. There are so many interesting things to see and so much history to discover it is a very rewarding way to spend an hour or more.
