Two friends and I had an evening meeting in Beverley and had to kill time in that difficult period between 4pm - 6pm when so many cafes are closing or closed. I had the brilliant idea of finding a hotel for afternoon tea and after some research on the internet chose Tickton Grange. Good choice! We booked and everything was ready for us at 4pm, served by a charming young waiter with a good sense of humour. We sat on comfy settees surrounded by lovely old books in the sort of lounge with a bar that you would expect in a country house hotel. The waiter explained exactly what was in our sandwiches (smoked salmon, egg and ham), with cheese straws, delicate shortbread, chocolate brownie triangles and individual sponge cakes. Plenty of tea too and the hot water pot was particularly pretty. At £15 each this was the most reasonably priced afternoon tea I've had.
