We had a day trip to Sledmere. Very beautiful house and gardens. Well worth a visit. You can only go around the house on guided walks, but it was informative. The landscaping and gardens are beautiful. It wasn't too busy. Don't plan to go on a Saturday - it is used for Weddings and house isn't open! We would definitely recommend a visit.

“Grand day out!”
Reviewed August 26, 2013 via mobile

I've been past Sledmere House many times on my way to work on the east coast, but this time decided to take the family for a visit.
The admission charge was very reasonable, £18 for a family ticket compares very favourably with similar offerings in the region.
The house isn't the largest, but its not lacking in interesting features, decor or artefacts. Our children were given age related quizzes to help them focus on the house and some of the questions highlighting features that may have orherwise been overlooked.
Some of the rooms had a lived in feel to them, which I liked as this makes the house appear to be more of a home than a museum.
Outside, the walled garden was well worth a visit and the kids enjoyed the play area.
Bring a picnic and enjoy an afternoon in elegant splendour.

“Worth The Long Journey”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

Just made my 2nd only trip to this unsung hero of the East Yorkshire grand houses circuit. Being off the beaten track it's a lot quieter than some of the more well known establishments, good value too at £5.50 grounds only admission for adults. Be sure to seek out the walled garden with it's unique(?) garden within a garden layout. I could have sat there all day soaking up the sun in the shelter of the strong winds. The whole inner garden is just crammed full of colour and interest, embracing both traditional and modern themes. Good shop with sensibly priced items, spacious café too although service can be a tad slow if a coach party descends. There is a limited bus service on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays by the EYMS 133 and 135 routes from either Driffield or Malton.

“Beautiful House in Gorgeous Setting”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

Went for the day and went on the first guided tour which was very informative and interesting. Plenty to see. The gardens are delightful and where in full flower. Had lunch in the tearoom and it was very nice. The plant sales are good and bought two plants, the gift shop well stocked and reasonable prices. The wagoners museum is also worth a visit as we had wagoners in our family and lovely to see them not forgotten. Also loved the displays describing Sledmere and its past. A walk to the church is a must so is a visit to the memorials erected long ago. Cannot wait to return and have another look round.

“Informative and entertaining guide.”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

A lovely house with a ' lived in and used' feel to it. Very detailed guided tour with lots of personal touches. The walled gardens are exceptional ; we were fortunate to visit on a glorious hot day and all the seasons seem to have come at once but have never seen a garden so full and in such tip top condition.
Unfortunately we did not realise it was 'tours' only from the tourist info. we had checked this was not clear. We arrived about 10 minutes late for the last tour at 2.30pm which seems very early. We were allowed to catch up with the group but had missed quite a lot by the time we had paid and walked over to the house. It is strictly tours only. We were not offered a recap or even a peek into the rooms that we had missed.
Café shop etc were all closed by the time we had enjoyed the grounds and gardens. We were ushered out and everything locked behind us. The church is down the road and does not live up to it's write ups.
