“Great Hotel in a fantastic location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

Stayed here over the Easter weekend with a group of friends. A great time was had by all in the great little hotel in an absolutely stunning setting. The Wreckers Retreat is also a fantastic pub with decent food. Very tolerant of our late night drinking.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

Well, that's the view - simply stunning.

Add to that really helpful staff, nothing too much trouble, good honest 'pub grub' with no pretensions, more than adequate bedrooms and a great breakfast - what more can you want?

Certainly exceeded our expectations.

We have stayed at the Hartland Quay on many occasions and have never before been disappointed however it has definitely gone down hill. We checked in at about 3.30pm and were shown to our room. The room was spacious and clean. The first thing that struck us was the cold. We asked at the reception desk about heating and were advised that the boiler was broken and an engineer had been called.

The bathroom was icy cold and the towel rail fell off of the wall when we removed a towel from it. We asked again about the heating and were told that they could provide us with a small electric heater.

The room was large so we asked for two heaters and were told no. The rooms only have single glazing, which we understand is part of it character, but this did nothing to help with the temperature of the room.

We were advised by the bar staff that the heating was only off in the bedrooms and was working ok in the rest of the hotel, the bar staff stated that she would arrange for us to have a discount off of our bill on departure and would leave a note at reception for a discount to be given. The room was freezing overnight and when we mentioned again upon departure we were offered no discount at all despite the fact that we commented on the fact that our stay had not been comfortable. The receptionist told us the the bar staff 'had no authority' to tell us that we could have a discount and that they would not be honoring it....Whatever happened to customer service???? Upon pushing the situation we were given a discount of £4.60 off of the total of our bill. It all appeared to be shoddily run and there was a distinct lack of communication between staff. Our bill was mixed up with someone elses on departure and it was only because we noticed the names were wrong on the top that we didn't end up paying too much!!!

This was a very disappointing stay and we felt that more could have been done to accommodate those guest who were there especially as there were only 9 rooms occupied that night. Surely they could have supplied more heaters as the hotel was only part full.

The breakfast was nice but slow. The glassware however was chipped and dirty. The room that used to be used for evening dinner is now only used for breakfast and the only place to eat in the evening is in the bar. The food was bland and not as described on the menu. Mayonnaise was used instead of Mary Rose sauce on prawn cocktail.

All in all a disappointing stay especially at £50 per person per night. We wont be staying again.

This is the second time we've stayed at the Hartland Quay Hotel and would certainly recommend it. Perched on a cliff top overlooking a vicious Atlantic swell, this spot is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax.

The hotel room was clean, warm and comfortable, equipped with tv, kettle and bathtub to warm the cockles after a romantic cliff top walk. The service could have been friendlier and there was no shower in the room but this didn't faze us too much. The full English hit the spot in the morning.

The highlight for us is the Wrecker's retreat pub attached to the hotel. This cosy pub, complete with Atlantic view, real ales and cider and tasty pub grub takes you back to a time of shipwrecks, pirates and plunder. Perfect for sipping local ale and reading Treasure Island while all warm by the radiator, with the crashing waves below. A great place to escape from it all and we'll certainly be returning.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013

I arrived at Hartland Quay quite early and sat in the sun for a while but got a bit cold so checked in at about 4pm. I found my room disappointingly chilly after a day's walking and although I switched the extra heater on I can't say the room was ever cosy, or quite warm enough.

However it was spacious and clean, with a lovely sea view, and the bed was comfortable.

There's no direct guest access from the hotel to the bar which was a shame as it meant going out in the cold wind again to get to the bar to eat. The wifi access was only in the bar, and the signal was poor. My food was a long time coming but staff did apologise, saying it was because, as a special, it was cooked individually. If only they'd told me that when I ordered.. The beer was good though.

After eating I went back to my (by now warmish) room as the pleasant looking lounge was freezing.

Breakfast was hearty but I've had nicer sausages. And the dining room was cold. A decent packed lunch saw me through the day's walk. Would be inclined to find a little B&B next time.

Room Tip: See if they've got one with double glazing!

We visited the Hartland Quay lookout and headland because of its history - pirates, ship wrecks and the geological rock formations. On the day we visited the skies were overcast, it was fairly windy, the seas slate grey and pounding the rocks / surging onto the rocky shore . . . awesome. We retreated into the Hartland Quay Hotel for some very welcome hot chocolates and other drinks. Staff were very friendly and answered all the questions thrown at them by the mad Aussies.

This is a great little place. We stayed in room 4 which has a sea view from a bay window, and what appears to be a newly refurbished bath(shower) room. Being the start of December the outside temperature was cold. But never fear they supply extra heaters in the rooms which kept us toasty despite the single glazing.

Free wi-fi in the hotel and the bar as well. Phone signal can be patchy, but that's part of the appeal of the place.

As a group of 7 we sampled quite a bit of the food. If you can judge a hotel by it's breakfast sausage. This is a top hotel. And the rest of the food did match this. The food wasn't too fancy, but it was all excellently cooked, and not expensive.

If you want to get away, see a rugged patch of coast, and eat well. Book in.
