Hartland Quay Hotel
Ranked #7 of 11 Hotels in Bideford
Reviewed January 23, 2013

We visited the Hartland Quay lookout and headland because of its history - pirates, ship wrecks and the geological rock formations. On the day we visited the skies were overcast, it was fairly windy, the seas slate grey and pounding the rocks / surging onto the rocky shore . . . awesome. We retreated into the Hartland Quay Hotel for some very welcome hot chocolates and other drinks. Staff were very friendly and answered all the questions thrown at them by the mad Aussies.

This is a great little place. We stayed in room 4 which has a sea view from a bay window, and what appears to be a newly refurbished bath(shower) room. Being the start of December the outside temperature was cold. But never fear they supply extra heaters in the rooms which kept us toasty despite the single glazing.

Free wi-fi in the hotel and the bar as well. Phone signal can be patchy, but that's part of the appeal of the place.

As a group of 7 we sampled quite a bit of the food. If you can judge a hotel by it's breakfast sausage. This is a top hotel. And the rest of the food did match this. The food wasn't too fancy, but it was all excellently cooked, and not expensive.

If you want to get away, see a rugged patch of coast, and eat well. Book in.

Stayed for 5 nights in a comfortable room with a sea view. Dramatic location and weather. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food in the Wreckers' Bar was good hearty pub fare with large helpings. Enjoyed the braised steak and onions very much. St. Austell Tribute ale and a shortish wine list.

Good base for walking and exploring the area. Will definitely return when the footpaths are less muddy.

Thanks for a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view and WIFI if they're important to you.

Stayed here 5 years ago and enjoyed the drama of the location but commented that it had seen better days. Returning last month it was obvious that the place had been smartened up and was more presentable and even more welcoming than before. It was a cold and windy Friday afternoon when we arrived but the tidy, cosy but spacious room with a wonderful view over the wild sea was warm and welcoming. The atmosphere and the food (and the beer) in the adjoining old smugglers' bar was perfect. This is a great place to spend a get away from it weekend where you can enjoy nature and the British weather at its rawest and know you have the perfect haven to return to at the end of the day.

Room Tip: A sea view is a great bonus!

I have been to Hartland Quay for 30 years now but never stayed in the hotel, so I already have appreciated the rugged coast, the remoteness, the walks and the other North Devon charms near by. Hartland itself, Clovelly, Lundy is visible on a good day etc..Driving to the hotel you get the impression you are driving off the land, as the road suddenly dives down the cliff to find the hotel below.

The hotel is fine, comfortable, you're not here for the Hotel, you're here for the location. The bar is busy (the Olympics were on in one room) and friendly. The beer is good and the food is good pub food - all idea after a day out. Breakfast was cooked and fantastic, with packed lunches available.

There is a car park on site (at busy times there is a charge for entering the road to the hotel, but just mention you are staying and you are waved through)

The only problem was we had only booked two nights. We really will return. Promise.

We visited Hartland Quay, during out stay at Welcombe during a morning, before the bar was open, so cannot comment on that. The views from around the hotel are however absolutely stunning, and we also visited the small maritime museum above the shop - entry, if I remember correctly was only 50p!! and well worth every penny. In addition to many maritime artifacts there were newspaper cuttings, and photos, going back over the decades, of the reports of the numerous wrecks along this stretch of the north Devon coast. I have in fact stayed at the Hotel, while doing the SW Coast Path, but that was 10 years ago, so would decline to comment on my recollections, although I'm sure I would have remembered had it not come up to standard

If you are in the area, this is a place not to be missed. One and a half nautical mile of coast line which sunk more ships than anywhere in the world. Not without help some say. Very vintage in style and decor hotel. A bit shabby but it is the part of its charm. Nice food and really atmospheric pub. Try the duck on the specials board. Will be not disappointed. Had it twice in last two years. Every time very happy. Some nice local beverages as well. Not to be missed.
