Owner description: Only one mile from Hartland Quay, Hartland Abbey lies across a narrow, sheltered valley which winds its way to the spectacular Atlantic Coast. Within a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ visitors may wander around the beautiful gardens and grounds which lead to the rocky cove. Peacocks and guinea fowl roam at will, whilst donkeys and Black Welsh Mountain sheep graze the Old Deer Park.Hartland Abbey is the lived-in family home of the Stucley family. Although it was built in the 12th century, remaining as a monastery for 400 years and passing through the female line three times, it has never been sold. Consequently, it contains collections of pictures, furniture and porcelain which have accumulated over many generations. The story of the Abbey mirrors local and national history at every turn. It has a friendly and lived-in atmosphere, so often absent in many of our nation’s historic houses, a point continually remarked upon by those who visit us.

Enjoyed seeing the house - it really has a lived-in feel. Gardens very interesting and met a helpful gardener there, Pleasant walk along the valley to the coasta and back - all in all a very pleasant afternoon

We spent several hours exploring the grounds, from the beach to the walled gardens via all the possible paths in between. It was a glorious sunny day and the shade of the trees was very welcome. Everybody was very friendly and helpful, including the lady of the house who met us as we came back from the walled gardens by a slightly unorthodox route across the field. As connoisseurs of cream teas, we can certainly recommend the Hartland Abbey tea room.

Hartland Abbey and Gardens offers a warm welcome to visitors from the end of March until October. Hartland Abbey is a fascinating house The walks are really not for disabled people but the lady of the house drove us up to see the gardens where they grow vegetables in one part & flowers & a shade house in another part, we then strolled back down through some very nice scenery to the Abbey. There is a cafe there where you can have tea & coffee & something to eat. Very nicely kept Abbey.

The house and grdens were well worth a visit. The walled garden was full of colour and interest. The staff were very informative and helpful. The only downside was the distance from the car park to the walled garden with someone that is partially disabled. The tea rooms had a good selection of light snacks and cakes.
