“Lovely stay in North castle keep”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

Had a very relaxing few days in the N.C.K, the accommodation was cosy and very well equipped. The bed was very comfortable we slept like logs, probably all the fresh air and walking.
The food in the tavern was delicious with large size portions.
We stayed for three nights which was just the right amount of time, any longer and we might of gone stir crazy and a day trip is far too short to see the island.

“Great day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

I really like visit islands so recaps biased but this was a first class trip to a gorgeously unspoilt one with spectacular coastline and scenery, possibly helped but perfect weather conditions.
It's well worth visiting if you get the chance even if you only want to enjoy the boat trip, a really enjoyable day away!

“Awesome place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013

If you go for a day trip, like most, you will probably walk up the steep hill & end up in the tavern for a drink & bite to eat then walk to the lighthouse before walking back to the boat. Just a nice day out. HOWEVER stay for a few nights or more & you will realise what a gem of an Island this truly is

We stayed in Little St. John's cottage which was perfect for 2 people. Woke up to peace & tranquility - & a view to die for. Cannot fault the cottage, it had everything you would need & more including so much interesting info on the history of the island & cottages

It's a well kept secret how wonderful this place is - the well travelled people in the next cottage have returned each year for 20 years & it's easy to know why.

We walked for 2 hours in sheer tranquility before even seeing another person,

The sunset was incredible - easily equalled my favourite in Santorini,

To sum up - you must go to experience this unique Island- no tv, no Internet, back to simple life nature & friendliness - pub & food good too

“Beautiful and serene...a paradise close to home!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

A great day out! Boat crossing a bit rough but there again we did expect that!
Expect to do a LOT of walking up quite a few steep inclines - this was fine for us and our little boy but you would struggle with very young children.
The Marisco Tavern serves decent, if not a slightly limited selection of food - mainly baguettes, soup, burgers and pastys - but they do have to cater for a good couple of hundred over lunchtime when there are daytrippers on the island.
Toilets however not so good! The pub loos were shut so we had to use the 'black shed' facilities which were very small and looked a bit like very old school / public toilets - not nice!
The views are stunning - we climbed to the top of the lighthouse - luckily we had fantastic weather and we could see for miles.
Although we only had four hours on the island before the return boat journey (luckily not as rough on the way back) - it was a wonderful escape from the business, pressures and stresses of everyday life.

“Just don't see why the negative reviews!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2013 via mobile

Went for our 5 year olds birthday! Crossing was a bit up and down - which the wife didn't enjoy! Once on the island we were delighted, lovely long walks, quaint tavern (must cater for hundreds at a time so can understand the precooked items!) and handy shop with all the essentials and touristy souvenirs! The island has a long and checkered history - one that I think is clearly explained in several mediums which are available (probably in brail too if required!) so am unable to fathom other previous reviews about facilities! If you've never stayed on an isolated island or a Landmark Trust property, I would suggest doing a bit of research before you book/commit to going!

In my view - excellent staff and crossing, beautiful, isolated island that provides and excellent day or multi day visit! Be sensible, be hygienic and I'm sure you'll survive! If you need smog, noise and pollution to cope, stay away, this one isn't for you!

NT and Landmark trust, you're doing a fine job - keep it up and I'll continue to be one of you're loyal supporters!
