“Great room, shame about reception staff and guests!”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

I can only rate this hotel with three stars, mainly due to the poor quality of service and efficiency of the receptionist and rowdy coach party that arrived on our second day. Firstly, I have to say, that our room was excellent with tasteful modern decor and a beautiful bathroom, with a stunning outlook over fields and the river and at £110.00 per night, good value. The breakfast offer is again excellent with good quality products and friendly staff.

However, the reception staff are a different matter. Firstly, when trying to book over the phone - we were on the way and therefore using our mobile - we were put on "hold" three times! whilst the receptionist was answering other calls and each time she came back to me, I had to remind her as to what I was booking, as she couldn't remember - very frustrating and unprofessional. Secondly, she never once acknowledge us when passing or asked us if we had had a pleasant holiday etc. when checking out. Sorry, not good enough in these "tough times" when hotels are trying to fill beds and get customers to return.

Then, their was the coach party that arrived. On enlightening from the coach, they were rowdy and were drinking cans of Strongbow cider and started to smoke outside the hotel, signage clearly states "no smoking at front of hotel". The receptionist did nothing! when informed and these guests continued to smoke at the reception doors throughout their overnight stay, even though the hotel offers a "smoking area" that is covered and also provides seats.

Having said all that, I have to state that the bar staff, especially the female member of the team, were excellent and their customer service was great. The Appledore Bar is open all day until 9.30pm and their food offering was again excellent, also offering a fixed special of £6.50 for a main course and free dessert.

On our first night, the hotel was holding a charity night, with a live group. The music, very loud, went on to 12.00 midnight and as we were above the function room, it was not the quiet night's sleep we envisaged, however, the night porter did offer to change our room to a more quieter room at the other end of the hotel and we took up this offer the following morning, as their was another function being held that night also.

Overall, the rooms are great and good value for what I paid, however, more control should be offered by the hotel management on unruly guests and offer retraining to their receptionist.

Room Tip: Check if the hotel is holding any functions that day, if so, ask for a room away from function suite...

We stayed 2 nights in a superior estuary room, not worth £110.00, although the room was clean it was tatty, window didnt fit the frame, couldnt unpack as no doors on wardrobe and drawers were full of dust, good points were friendly staff, food was great, handy to travel from, i wouldnt reccomend this hotel unless they sorted repairs and updated photos on website, lift was quirky as a american said, pool was changing colour to green, it could be a good hotel if it was updated, think twice before you book

The sign out front says "Rooms from 40 pounds"... what they don't say is it's Per Person! I guess we got a deluxe one at 95! Room size was wonderful. I thought the bed was going to be a little hard but was great! A good night's sleep!
FREE WIRELESS was awesome.
The Bathroom looked great... stylish glass basin and rain-shower head. Unfortunately the fancy shower curtain rod was on a slant so the heavy (they don't use liners.. just the heavy cloth) curtain kept sliding towards the middle of the tub....no wonder the grout (what there is) is black with mould and the puddle of water at the door seeped under the hall carpet.. don't know what the ceiling in the room below looked like. The toilet needed 'pumping' to make it flush!
Big disappointment was dinner in the lounge. I had never tried a Potato Jacket before....and for 7.95 I hoped this was going to be the Best in Britain. I almost broke a tooth on the Microwaved-burned rock-hard end.... the cheese filling was some type of processed something that wouldn't melt. We ordered decaf coffee... presented nicely until we tasted it.... INSTANT! Graham Ramsey would not have approved.
Breakfast (included) the next day was ok... watery scrambled eggs but tasty.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the back of the hotel... a bit noisy from the highway.

We booked this hotel through Booking.com as there was not many hotels in the area that had rooms available. As with several other reviews the food was hit and miss, especially breakfast, my wife had to send hers back, the bacon needed a steak-knife to cut and the mushrooms were dry and lifeless, totally unsatisfactory, no chef with any pride would send food out like this.
The Olive Tree restaurant carpetting looked as if it had not been cleaned. We were shown to a table for breakfast which sat 8, there were two spaces left, all the previous guests plates were still in place, staff seemed disorganised, service was poor with too many guests for them to manage. However evening meals were fine, with staff having time to deal with customers.
On checking out, there was no enquiry on our stay, the receptionist seemed uninterested in us as customers.

Room Tip: North facing rooms do have a view of the river/estuary. Third floor is a penthouse!

It is very disappointing to hear that you were not fully satisfied with the breakfast you were served in our restaurant. We do source all of our produce from good quality local suppliers but if any client is not satisfied with how their meal is cooked – especially if certain items are not to clients taste e.g. crispy bacon rather than soft, we will of course exchange the meal. We very rarely receive bad feedback with regards to our food, considering the hotel is at almost full capacity most weekends, the feedback we receive is very good.
Thank you for taking the time to review our restaurant and we hope to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future.

We were recently taken to the Durrant by the family of friends who apparently are regular diners there. We had been with them when they had made the reservation for that evening. Upon arrival (party of 8) there was no reservation, but the staff accommodated us without too much effort. The restaurant was busy and very noisy. The food quality was frankly awful - tasteless, dry and very disappointing for the whole of the party.
