I can only rate this hotel with three stars, mainly due to the poor quality of service and efficiency of the receptionist and rowdy coach party that arrived on our second day. Firstly, I have to say, that our room was excellent with tasteful modern decor and a beautiful bathroom, with a stunning outlook over fields and the river and at £110.00 per night, good value. The breakfast offer is again excellent with good quality products and friendly staff.
However, the reception staff are a different matter. Firstly, when trying to book over the phone - we were on the way and therefore using our mobile - we were put on "hold" three times! whilst the receptionist was answering other calls and each time she came back to me, I had to remind her as to what I was booking, as she couldn't remember - very frustrating and unprofessional. Secondly, she never once acknowledge us when passing or asked us if we had had a pleasant holiday etc. when checking out. Sorry, not good enough in these "tough times" when hotels are trying to fill beds and get customers to return.
Then, their was the coach party that arrived. On enlightening from the coach, they were rowdy and were drinking cans of Strongbow cider and started to smoke outside the hotel, signage clearly states "no smoking at front of hotel". The receptionist did nothing! when informed and these guests continued to smoke at the reception doors throughout their overnight stay, even though the hotel offers a "smoking area" that is covered and also provides seats.
Having said all that, I have to state that the bar staff, especially the female member of the team, were excellent and their customer service was great. The Appledore Bar is open all day until 9.30pm and their food offering was again excellent, also offering a fixed special of £6.50 for a main course and free dessert.
On our first night, the hotel was holding a charity night, with a live group. The music, very loud, went on to 12.00 midnight and as we were above the function room, it was not the quiet night's sleep we envisaged, however, the night porter did offer to change our room to a more quieter room at the other end of the hotel and we took up this offer the following morning, as their was another function being held that night also.
Overall, the rooms are great and good value for what I paid, however, more control should be offered by the hotel management on unruly guests and offer retraining to their receptionist.
