“A real treat.”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

Three days respite from London, on the way to a funeral, so we wanted a quiet, leisurely meal with good service. Carey's Manor didn't disappointed. There was a wedding that day, so we thought dinner might be noisy, or staff might be elsewhere, but it didn't impinge at all. The pianist was excellent - and the food. Such helpful attentive staff.

“Nice Experience”
Reviewed July 22, 2012

Rang to reserve dinner on Saturday and spoke to very friendly lady, great start.
Arrived and was greeted in a very friendly manner, no snottiness. Table was by the window but also by the waitress area but it surprisingly didnt detract from the experience and we had booked last minute so was all to be expected.

A soup came out as a kind of amuse bouche, for me it fell short, extremely bland watercress concoction with no taste, no seasoning. It was fresh but left no impression and lacked wow factor. I think the whole idea of the amuse bouche is to raise excitement levels for what is about to come and this failed,

For starters I had the scallops with vanilla oil and some kind of sweet potato puree. Andrea my partner had the Beetroot starter. Out of the two the Beetroot was definitely the best, i felt the scallop dish was under seasoned and lacked the spark of a pancetta, tomato, black pudding, something to play it off against. The sweet potato or carrot puree was just too bland and the scallops with no seasoning seemed nowhere and lost. Presentation was good and service was pleasant and Andreas beetroot dish was definitely a hit.
Main course I had the Pork Belly, presentation was superb and crackling was excellent. The negative for me was that the pork belly tasted a little fatty, you could taste the roast meat taste. I would have liked to have seen the pork belly perhaps slow braised with the crackling roasted seperately. Other parts of the dish were done very well, the jus was great.
Andrea had the mullet and it was a very well presented and tasty dish, 9 out of 10.
The grand finale was for me the cheese board which was excellent. Some great cheeses and thin well prepared biscuits that were melt in the mouth, Great experience.
So overall

Negatives: Just lacked a little flavour for me across all dishes apart from the cheeses. Wine took a good 25 minutes to arrive at the table, actually arriving after starters were delivered.

Positives: Staff very friendly and well mannered, we had a great waitress attending our table. Presentation of food was great. The whole experience was very pleasant, piano player was very good.

Overall a nice experience but the food for me just fell short. I am sure though that on his day this chef can certainly cook and just lacks a little guidance.

“good stuff”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

Ate one night whilst staying at the hotel) Really good food and a good wine list. The staff highly mixed. The lady maitre d' annoyed me hugely (but that may just be a bad day) The male maitre d' much better (and at the other breakfasts etc we ate) and Anna was fantastic. We had an extra course in the hotel drawing room and she came through to check the right orders had appeared. Just the right staff to have. The wrong menu appeared 3 times (this was a printing issue but since the staff knew that there were incorrect menues around is it too much to get the right ones first time?). These issues were adressed with the management later and efficiently acted upon.

“Food fine - service lacking”
Reviewed May 5, 2012

We have come to Carey's Manor Hotel for a special night away and booked the Manor Restaurant having high expectations.
We arrived tonight for our 9pm booking and were asked on arrival at the bar if we wanted to go straight through to the restaurant. We said "yes" and, on going through, were asked to wait back outside. Within seconds we were then asked to come back through and led to a dark room off the main restaurant, sat near a large party so that we could barely hear each other. My partner's chair was rickety and had to be replaced.

We asked to be moved and this was dealt with promptly and efficiently - though this time we found ourselves at a ricketty table which we had to ask the staff to sort out The sommelier was professional and made good reconmendations. We waited a while for our starter - no one thought to serve bread despite there being butter and side plates on the table. The starter and main courses we chose were good, though not outstanding. Throughout the meal, no one came to top up our glasses at any time. We found that level of inattentiveness unusual in a restaurant of this calibre.
We ordered desserts and a dessert wine plus a coffee. Desserts arrived- no dessert wine. We had to remind the waiter about this. Further, the coffee failed to arrive. The staff appeared to be more interested in setting up for the next morning than in attending to us.

Food fine - service lacking. Not what we had expected in a restaurant with two rosettes.
