“Shabby chic is fine but mis-matching cutlery, a no-no!”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

We were invited to join our daughter and son-in-law for dinner at The Pig on a Saturday evening. They had a two night stay at the hotel, we were invited to take a look at the room before we embarked on a 'tour' of the walled garden. Their room was ok, but at £200 per night it should be but their gripe was that at that price, breakfast should have been included in the price! Shameful of the hotel management at squeezing yet more money from customers for an 'ok' room.
The hotel interior has a shabby chic design, giving it a much more casual feel rather than a 'stuffy & staid' atmosphere of some pretentious establishments. The food, as has been mentioned in previous reviews, has all been sourced within a 25 mile radius, appreciated by our group.
The various starters and main courses were all well cooked & presented, no complaints here. My only real gripe, i believe the shabby chic feel has been taken a step too far by using mis-matching cutlery! This is an absolute no-no at home let alone in a restaurant that is far from cheap, so a request to the management, matching cutlery, please?
All in all, an enjoyable evening at The Pig and would happily return - but matching cutlery please!!

Room Tip: Request that management include breakfast in the price of the room rate

Absolutely fantastic place. Lovely cosy feel to it, proper country home with a constant smell of log fires and a real sense of warmth.

The staff were all so friendly, enthusiastic and helpful and seemed to enjoy their work which is a great sign. They keep the atmosphere relaxed which is nice as with such nice facilities and medium-high prices it would be very easy for it to become 'stuffy' and pretentious but it is not at all, it feels homely, relaxing and can be whatever you make of it.

The food is the feature and we had two of the best evening meals we have ever had. Everything is beautifully presented (but not tiny portions) and bursting with fresh flavour. The grounds are beautiful and really interesting with the walled garden, potting shed and animals and within a couple of miles you have the best that Hampshire has to offer which you can access on foot, by bike or by car.

The room was very relaxing with a nice bathroom and stunning views. I kind of expected a little more space in a comfy luxe room however i also liked the fact the hotel was smaller than i expected so i suppose you cannot have both.

The one slight criticism is that, for the price, breakfast should be included. They do not charge a bomb for it and there is plenty of choice however with the room rate it would not hit their profits too hard if they threw this in.

This will be the first trip of many and whilst we will always look to stay, it is also perfect for a romantic or group meal and well worth a bit of a travel.

Thank you very much for a perfect weekend.

I am loathe to say anything bad about The Pig as the staff were all really lovely. It was just not quite the right place for us to celebrate a 'big' anniversary (ok then - we have been married 20 years). On the plus side everything we ate (including delicious biscuits/brownies in our room) was excellent. Breakfast was an absolute feast - without even bothering with the cooked option. The bed/bedding was very good quality and we liked most of the decoration throughout the hotel. It is certainly quite different to the standard country house hotel and I am sure this is what they were aiming for. It has a very relaxed atmosphere. You felt you could kick your shoes off and curl up on one of the many sofas.
The down side was I think we wanted a little more luxury. A rug or two on our bedroom floor (rather than bare floor boards). A quiet romantic dinner table for two (rather than a very busy and noisy conservatory). Some music we could relate to and sigh with happy memories (some Van Morrison would have been nice). A few less children (actuallly it is probably a great hotel for children - but please could they sleep in the rooms away from the main building. We were woken twice but it must be even more annoying for couples trying to have a break from their own small children).
I am sure that this hotel will be a huge success as it definitely fills a gap in the market. Just be sure before you book that this is what you are looking for.

Room Tip: If staying with small children please ask for a courtyard family room and allow the guests staying i...

Getting to The Pig from London took us just 1.5 hours from Waterloo. It's then just a quick cab journey from the station to the hotel. We stayed in the Tack Room which felt like a converted stable. Everything about this place is great - the scenery is beautiful. The staff are very friendly. (Recommend taking a stroll around the gardens - even the gardener's seemed happy to chat and tell us about what they were growing.)

The room was really well decorated with excellent facilities. The best part for us was the evening meal in the restaurant. It was dark, cosy and rustic with atmospheric lighting. The food is amazing - one of the nicest meals I've had in a long time. (Treat yourself to the cheeseboard too!)

You can hire bikes from the hotel or venture into the forest on foot - Just make sure you ask for a map from reception! Will definitely visit again.

The Food, the ambiance, the surroundings cannot be faulted - shabby / chic were the descriptive words. Never done s/c before but will certainly do if this is the standard ? The staff are delightful -- young and inobtrusive. Nothing is a trouble. The Evening meal was faultless and the breakfast just class. My wife and I live a mere half hour away and this was a present from daughter and son in law. Totally perfect. If you have the opportunity to sample both the food and the accommodation at the Pig - trust me 'you will NOT be disappointed' ! Do take time to visit the kitchen garden and wish your own greenhouse slightly looked like this !

We loved this place, the ambience is so cosy and comfortable, yet quirky and a bit unexpected all at the same time. We definitely will stay here next time, we found the restaurant to be such a fabulous space and the food was amazing. Its an absolute pork lovers paradise, the small nibble plates - pork belly with pickled fennell and quails egg scotch eggs, were fantastic. I loved the Scallops and the husband thought he had died and gone to heaven with the wild garlic risotto and local salami. All the food is sourced from a 25 mile radius, and it shows. Fresh, innovative and delicious.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment. It's really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden and everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef - they grow and find the food - the chef then makes the menu. The style is home grown in every way - breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won't be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
