We have been to the Pig many times, but since our last visit, things have changed.

There is still the homely happy feel around the place, but mainly you feel that it is now a well oiled machine rather than the friendly retreat it was when we last went in November. The restaurant/bar in particular now feel devoid of charectars besides the lovely Polish hostess (Barbara) and the South African (?) barman. On previous visits, there were a good few very happy, clever and witty staff, mostly British and french who went out of their way to help us relax. I'm sure other Pig regulars have noticed this... When i asked the straightforward manager he said something muddled about 'people move on'.

What he didn't understand was that this is what we loved most about the place, could they not hire some more charmers? The service seemed fairly regimented and soulless at times, the sommelier had little knowledge of the wine list, and food was slammed down in front of us.

I still love the atmosphere, the food and the location, the reception girls are as delightful as always, and the showers are where i'm happiest!!

Maybe we just had the days when the nice people were off, but couldnt help feeling a little saddened. Hopefully all the staff we loved will appear at the next Pig.

Room Tip: Room 4 has great views.

We recently had lunch at this Hotel, so this is just a review of the restaurant, I will however rate what I saw of the building.
The setting is fabulous, there is ample car parking with a very spacious feel to the approach. Upon arrival we were greeted with a smile and shown to a couple of large comfy sofas in the bar area. The menu was quite varied and would probably have something to satisfy most tastes. The food (and the drinks) were a little pricey though.
We were shown to our table in the airy dining room which has a large number of tables all of different shapes and sizes, none of which have tablecloths . The room is a type of 'orangery' with plants scattered around as you would find in a greenhouse, unfortunately the chairs, which were a varied collection of old conservatory style furniture, would have been more at home there also! They were hideously uncomfortable, anyone with a bad back or similar ailment would be well advised to go elsewhere.
We had the rib of beef for two, which for the money (£55) did not represent great value for money, It was cooked to our liking but was a little tough. There were no plates for the bread, so the table had to suffice, I know that in France that is the custom, but there, a restaurant of this standing would either have linen tablecloths or disposable paper ones.
All things considered, I think that The Pig is more suited to younger diners who might appreciate the Bohemian feel more than I did.

We stayed in a 'snug' room, which was within the main house. The room was wonderful, with so many lovely touches- bath robes, nespresso machine, wonderful 'bramley' toiletries, roberts digital radio, plentiful soft towels... The bed was the biggest I have ever seen, possibly the best night's sleep I've ever had- wonderfully comfy. Monsoon shower was fabulous! The communal areas are great- roaring fires, comfy sofas, magazines and board-games. If you are staying, dining at the restaurant is a must- delicious food & lovely dining room. Have recommended to many friends & hope to stay there again soon!

Loved loved loved everything about the Pig. From the moment you walk into the old stately house and are shown into one of their drawing rooms with log fires for a cheeky pre-dinner drink, you know it's going to be a good night. Cocktails are a little on the pricey side at about a tenner but we thought what the hell, let's have a blow out. To start with we ordered a few tapas style 'piggy bits' in place of starters and they were delish. Accompanied by freshly baked bread and butter, they were more than enough to stop the major rumbles in our tummies - for now. Mains were HUGE. My bath chap - a whole side of pig jaw with the most amazing crackling - could have kept a whole family going for a week while my partner's chilli and honey pork belly seemed to be never-ending. There were options to have half-size mains which we should have taken and will do next time. We rounded off dinner with a shared dish of petit fours which to be fair weren't needed but were gorgeous. The whole meal came to about £90 including a bottle of wine and pre-dinner cocktails but had we opted for half-size mains it would have been very cheap indeed. My new favourite restaurant.

I recently went to The Pig. Having not really been that impressed with its sister hotel LimeWood, I had heard great things about the easy decor and lovely food so decided to give it a try with a group of friends. The ambience is perfect, soft leather sofas to sit at before you go in for dinner, nothing is rushed, Piggy Bits are supplied with drinks (small pork orientated tasters ... pork crackling with apple sauce, scotch quails eggs, sausage rolls) and after these nibbles you go through to a fancy bistro style restaurant with elegant yet comfortable furnishings. I had the pork fillet with mash and the best sauce I have ever tasted, the fillet sliced like butter .... cheese board for dessert was small but perfectly adequate, wine throughout the meal was also fab. Six of us went out for dinner - with Piggy Bits, Main courses, Desserts and ample wine and beer the bill was £255 - excellent food, excellent company and excellent service. You have to book ahead as it gets very busy but well worth waiting a couple of weeks - there is an online booking service too !

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment. It's really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden and everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef - they grow and find the food - the chef then makes the menu. The style is home grown in every way - breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won't be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
