There is much to recommend The Pig, We had nice food and good service in very nice surroundings BUT a glass of ordinary rose was £13.50! The individual who thought up this price should stick to comedy. That, and the 12.5% service charge is enough to put us off either visiting again or recommending.

My husband took me on a surprise trip to the pig for our wedding anniversary. Our hotel room (just off the courtyard no 17) was huge, big bed, lovely bathroom and very tastefully decorated (quite White Company ish).

The food in the restaurant was excellent, locally sourced and seasonal. We are foodies and were very impressed. Our only critisism was that the dining room was packed and full and therefore quite noisy so if you are looking for somewhere romantic and quiet this is not the place at weekends. Breakfast was good, although being brits we love our cooked breakfasts and consider that a treat from the norm of a working week. The cooked menu was extra and while not hugely expensive I was a bit surprised.

Room Tip: 17 was great!

My fiance and I stumbled upon the Pig when we were looking for somewhere to lunch on the weekend we got engaged. We had a wonderful lunch and decided to book a weekend away there to extend the experience. I can't fault the hotel, love the decor and the rooms were lovely (albeit without a view) however, surprisingly the food was hit and miss. As I don't eat red meat, I ordered a clam chowder on the first night to start, which was delicious and then a vegetarian pasta for mains. The pasta was completely inedible, swimming in what can only be described as borderline rancid butter, I couldn't even finish my first taste. We sent it back and they responded appropriately and made a big fuss for the second night, which I appreciated. The food on the second night was significantly better, although the fish was not great (but certainly edible). The staff were professional, location stunning and we did have a good time but I honestly can't give it a 4 star review based on what I believe was a rushed and inferior meal the first night and a couple of hiccups (no newspaper was delivered although we had requested one, an order for coffee was forgotten etc). It has magnificent potential but I think some areas for improvement.

Went here for my birthday - based on a recent magazine article - and were not disappointed. Beautiful house in stunning grounds. Staff were extremely friendly, helpful and approachable. Our room (No. 6) was very comfortable, well appointed and had a lovely view of the front lawn and a huge pig sculpture. The food in the restaurant for dinner was absolutely excellent, and the wine and dessert wine were excellent - a very extensive list! The bar was warm and cosy for having a nice pre-dinner drink in relaxed surroundings. We had coffee after dinner in the lovely library room at a very leisurely pace. Dinner was unhurried, however staff in restaurant were overly attentive and this was detraction from the experience. The only other criticism was that the whole house especially the bedroom was rather overheated and made it difficult to get indecent nights sleep - also our room was clearly over one of the main downstairs room and I was kept awake from early morning buy noise of moving chairs etc about.

We did not manage to try breakfast as we were still full up from the meal the evening before! But menu did look extensive and had something to suit every palette and taste.

It has changed a LOT since we last visited with a new bar room and a huge extension to the dining room and it is almost impossible to get a room for one night let alone two. But we enjoyed the food and the room and the service and the food was amazing - especially the fig and cream cheese ice cream. Our room was lovely except for a few cobwebs behind the big lamp in the corner (room 15) and that's a observation not a complaint. The shower was great but the bed was uncomfortable and the room was clean and well thought out but a bit creeky. We had invited some friends to join us there for dinner and they enjoyed it very much. There was plenty of room to sit around after our meal and catch up. Breakfast was very good too. We will definately come back and do it all again and would recommend this place to our friends.

We had stayed at the old hotel Le Poussin at Whitley several times and it was one of my favourite places to stay and dine. We couldn't get a room this time so stayed elsewhere but booked
dinner. It has lost its old world charm and friendly atmosphere and now feels like a busy London brassierre. Food was ok. Service excellent. This group have now taken over another of my favourite places to stay the Manor Hotel at Studland. This needs a refurb but I hope they don't lose the atmosphere here too.

Delicious lunch with easy going and relaxed atmosphere.
Restaurant very busy but kindly accomodated us at short notice.
Unfortuantaly one female staff member overly keen to move plates and glasses so lunch appeared some what hurried at times.Other staff extremely friendly and accomodating.
We will be back with a larger group soon.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment. It's really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden and everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef - they grow and find the food - the chef then makes the menu. The style is home grown in every way - breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won't be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
