We stayed here for our first wedding anniversary and took our dog and were not disappointed. We were made to feel welcome with our dog which was a nice touch. We stayed in a standard room which was fine for what we needed. The hotel is in a very convenient location and the inside pool area/spa was great. We had breakfast and dinner here which was lovely and found the service very good. Thank you for a very enjoyable weekend.

I do love the Balmer Lawn. We've stayed many times over the years and love its intimacy and charm. The setting is perfect and staff are friendly. Just recently though, prices have become prohibitive. We regularly check Late Rooms and their own website but can never seem to find a suitable room that isn't very expensive. We would love to stay again but at over £250 per night for a family room, it is prohibitive, which makes me sad as we have been regulars in the past.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your recent stay with us at the Balmer Lawn.

Our prices vary depending on business levels and our availability so prices do increase at busier times, which do tend to be weekends and during the school holidays.

It is definitely worth calling us in the future though as it may be that we can be more versatile with our rates and room availability over the phone, maybe with a bit of juggling!

With this in mind I do hope that we may get the chance of welcoming you back to the hotel in the future.

Having just had our wedding at Balmer Lawn Hotel l felt it necessary to write a review for others thinking of booking there in the future. Firstly l would like to praise the fantastic staff in the front of house restaurant. We booked a large table for 18 guests the night prior to the wedding. It was superb, the staff were great, very attentive and lots of the guests commented how great it was.
Having such a wonderful first meal there we were filled with great expectations for our wedding breakfast the following day!!! oh how disappointed could we have been. To start with the canapes and drinks were very limited in amount, although obviously we were in charge of the amount we requested. The Toast drinks had been finished well before all the guests were served. When l asked the head waiter, his response immediately was" you have to pay for it" very true however as we were having an open bar l found his tone very harsh. we were quite happy to pay yet more money out, but surely there is a better way of ensuring this.
Prior to the wedding and after the 4 wedding coordinators at the hotel that we dealt with, we were shocked on our wedding day to see that the Hog Roast we booked was served in what could only look like canteen dishes, not outside on the lawn for the guests to enjoy, as promised by the wedding coordinator.
Having to remind the waiting staff to replace the wine on guests tables was not something l expected as a Bride, but perhaps this is something the hotel expects form its brides on their day.
The final couple of things l would like to warn up and coming future wedding couples is make sure you double check the final bill when leaving the hotel. I did and as a result found an additional 2 bottles of bubbly charged to my room!! which were removed once l highlighted the error.
We spent a lot of money at the hotel and feel it was definitely not to the standard they portray in the wedding brochure of the hotel.
If anything does go amiss on your wedding day, such as wedding cards from your post box then perhaps do not expect any calls from the hotel, or 1 member of staff that will assist you with clear information. A very disappointing review for what should have been a wonderful hotel.

I have to say that I am really puzzled by this review, during your communication with the hotel after your wedding day there was no mention of your unhappiness with the actual service on the day.

Regarding the quantity of food and drink, we provided everything that was agreed, you said yourself that you choose the menu and quantities. The “toast” drink is entirely that, it is there for the Toast why are you holding the hotel responsible for the fact that some of the guests drank the Champagne before the Toast. Again we have a duty to explain to guests when additional chargeable items are ordered, unfortunately in the past when this hasn’t been explained and guests have refused to pay. We are not suggesting that you would have done this but merely explaining why we make this clear. If the approach was “clumsy” in terms of what was actually said then we apologise for this and will ensure that a greater care is taken when approaching the subject of additional charges in the future.

Unfortunately there were a number of changes in the Wedding and Events department – one due to maternity and two further changes, but like any business can we really be held responsible if people leave to further their careers or move to other departments that offer different challenges? We take great pride in the quality of our staff and many have been with us for many years. You are the first client to complain about the service of the Hog Roast – clearly trying to service directly from the roasting unit would be impractical in terms of speed of service and would anyone in formal wedding attire really want to get too close to a hog roasting machine? This is why we carve the meat and present it in chaffing dishes under hot lights to maintain the temperature and quality. Did you specifically mention to Fran that you wanted the Hog Roast to be served outside?

We have checked with our Conference and Banqueting Manager and he is sure that there was never a time when anyone had to request the serving of additional wine, however, if this was the case it is something that should not have happened. You are right this is not something that any bride should have to concern herself with. With a spend of around £5,000, for 66 guests, we feel that the hotel offered value for money and certainly fulfilled all the expectations covered by the agreement. Again up until this review you have always stated that you were happy with everything and it was only the issue of the missing wedding cards that appeared to be an issue. With the error on the bill again this should not have happened and we will investigate this further, however, there is no need to suggest that this is something to “be aware of”, as it implies that we routinely overcharge our guests, which we would never do.

Finally, you mention the missing wedding cards from your Post Box, as you are fully aware we have thoroughly investigated this claim and even with the CCTV review have been unable to shed any light on the missing cards. Up until now you have always been polite and complimentary about the Hotel and all aspects of your wedding day. You wrote to the owner of the Hotel about your missing cards and it was explained that this was covered by the Hotel Proprietors Act. As we have no knowledge or evidence to support the claim that cards were lost, how can we be expected to deal with the matter? We offered every facility to check to see if we could see anything untoward and we fed this back to you. We even offered you the opportunity to review the footage for yourself at the Hotel but we have not heard from you since. Clearly unless something is given to us to secure away we cannot be held responsible in the event of something going missing, traditionally the role of the Best Man, Ushers or Bridesmaids has been to look after the presents and cards.

My first impression of this hotel from the main Lyndhurst road was good but as you pull onto the drive to park I found that on closer inspection the exterior was sadly in need of a major overhaul and reparation - more than just a paint job I fear! Inside the theme continued with a tired look and worn carpets and I thought this place could do with some investment and refurbishment. However, putting my first impressions aside and looking beyond, our actual stay was very good and the staff welcoming and friendly with service beyond reproach.
Perfectly located for the parks, walking distance from Brockenhurst (albeit along a very noisy main road) and a short drive from Lyndhurst and Beaulieu I would have no hesitation at making this hotel a base for a second visit later in the year or recommending it to friends and family.
The hotel was clean, the leisure facilities adequate and well serviced. The food at the Lounge was excellent in quality and quantity (it was a shame we could not dine at the Beresford as the menu looked very good but, with a little one in tow we thought it unwise and safer to try on our rerun visit, on our own, later in the year). The bar staff (especially Martin) kept us well fed and watered.
Breakfast was a hearty start to the day and kept us going on our treks and travels.
All in all, in rating this hotel, what it loses in points on general appearance it makes up for in its general comfort, service and culinary expertise and to me it's what's on the inside that matters.
Thank you for an enjoyable stay and we look forward to a return visit later in the year.

Thank you for taking the time to write a lovely review on your recent stay with us at the Balmer Lawn.

As a family owned hotel refurbishment work is done as, and when business allows, it is a bit like painting the Forth Bridge, it’s never ending!

I am delighted to hear that your first impressions were quashed and we managed to ‘win you over’!

We look forward to welcoming you back later on in the year.

Spent 2 days and night here, must say had a fantastic time, most relaxing hotel I've stayed in. Maybe the decor for some could do with updating but I think it works as it is with the hotel. Not every hotel has to have cream walls and cheap beach ikea furniture. Adds to character in my opinion. Can't understand people complaining about food very big portions and drinks were no dearer than other hotels. Wild horses were a amazing to wake up to especially baby ponies. Staff were good especially waiter with curly hair managed to keep everyone happy even though he's on his own. Location was fantastic and pool was gorgeous and definitely not dirty like some said, cleanest pool and changing rooms I've seen. Fantastic break thank you.
