We booked through Secret Escapes and as usual were not disappointed. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was very relaxed, the food excellent we did not feel that we needed to visit elsewhere for our evening meal even though we only booked bed and breakfast. The bed was comfortable the room was perhaps a little small I would hopefully look for a bigger room but it did in know way take away our overall satisfaction. A nice touch was two bottles of water left everyday along with the normal coffee, tea etc. I am sure this hotel will go from strength to strength if it continues to be run in this way.

Hi Tony and Sue,

Thank you for your review. I am so glad to hear that you found our staff helpful and friendly, we do pride ourselves on our high level of customer service. I am glad to hear that you liked our bedrooms and we have plenty more “quirky” things in the pipelines for our guests to make their stays with us even more enjoyable.

Our chefs do try their hardest to provide the highest quality food prepared as freshly as possible and I am pleased you enjoyed this.

Hopefully we will welcome you back to our hotel in the near future.

This is a newly refurbished hotel and it has a very relaxed, unique, funky feel which we enjoyed. The location is great for going to the beach or walking into the shopping area of Bude. We found plenty to explore nearby and useful info on local attractions in our room. The hotel staff are young and friendly - nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them and it was really refreshing to be made to feel so welcome. We ate in the grill restaurant and the food is great if you like steak, burgers etc. The only problem we had was getting up from the table after eating so much! The cooked breakfasts are also really nice, a choice of English or American style which is made to order. This seemed much better than the buffet you find in so many hotels. The rooms (or dreaming dens) are modern and stylish. Our only minor criticisms were that our room was fairly compact and did get quite hot and stuffy (admittedly we are having a freakily good Summer!). We asked for a fan which was willingly supplied and this helped a lot, but it would be brilliant to have air con/better ventilation and perhaps a fridge to keep water cool in. Overall though, this is a fab hotel and I'm sure it will soon be hard to book a room!

Room Tip: Some of the ground floor rooms are next to the car park so the higher up rooms may have a better vie...

Dear UkTrippytraveller,

Thank you for your review of Hebasca.

We have aimed to provide exactly that, a relaxed, unique and funky feel. We want to give all of our customers a refreshing experience to a stay away from home. The team are young, upbeat, local to the area and ready to please. We are investing a lot of time into the team to make sure the service has the edge that is expected in a modern hotel.
Food has been another area for us to shout about, we have looked at many different styles and elements within the Grill genre and found the feedback so far to be beyond our expectations. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so its our pleasure to be able to provide you with a fresh plate.
Overall a very flattering review, we value your feedback as a team.
Please do let me know if you would like any assistance with another trip to the area.

Take care

Stayed for work. Hotel was clean, the rooms modern, staff friendly and the portions from the resturant were HUGE! Also a good location for getting down to the beach.

Only downside was the fire alarm light which emitted a green glow from the ceiling all night and couldn't be covered up. The receptionist told me it was a health and safety requirement which I've never seen before, it did seriously affect my sleep so take a sleeping mask!

Thank you for your review of Hebasca,

Maybe next time you visit it will be for leisure, as you say we have a great location for the beach and the town. We'd be delighted to welcome you back to Hebasca.
My apologies for the Emergency LED in your room. unfortunately they are on all the time due to current regulations. We would have happily provided you with a sleeping mask as we keep them at reception. Again apologies for the sleep interruption.

Reviewed August 1, 2013

We have been asked to revisit our review of our stay at Hebasca, as the original one was apparently too political. We do this willing, as the issues concerned are more important than the narrative. We write many reviews in a number of contexts.

During our stay there we were treated as “other”, “different” and clearly our custom was not as important as everyone else’s, and we wrote the original review with reflective questions as to the intentions, assumptions and attitudes that create a culture where some people are treated like this and others are not.

In the original review, we developed the metaphor of how we were treated to consider this situation. We did not insult anyone, purely develop the logic of the metaphor to illustrate various points.

This has generated considerable debate, which it was designed to do, to provoke thinking about what was going on. The review has been taken down and we now offer this instead. However, we want to thank the people who have contacted us with support, and we hope that those folk who don’t feel able to speak out about being treated in such ways in any situation, know that there are people prepared to speak out on their behalf, and cause a commotion to do so if necessary.

So, to be specific, our main concerns with our stay at the Hebasca:

- It is not fair to treat people with dietary requirements as though they are different and peculiar. One in 10 people have wheat intolerance, 40% of the population is vegetarian [70% of the world is vegetarian], 7% has diabetes. There are many other related statistics we could quote but this list makes the point we hope. This is an Equalities issue and needs to be integrated into the working life of the Hebasca, unless its business is exclusive to a narrow population base. Dietary requirements and nutrition are not trivial, just as disability, gender and race are not trivial. When guests send pre-arrival e-mails concerning dietary requirements, they do this from courtesy to ensure these requirements are integrated into the hôtel’s modus operandi, not for it to become a big issue once they arrive.
Equalities is apparently a staff training issue here, so perhaps this should be considered.

- It is not fair to put people with asthma and/or hay fever in a bedroom that is dusty and has windows that allow exhaust fumes from the car park into the room.

- It may be an idea for hôtel staff themselves to try to stay with their partner and two suitcases in room 104. Try to stay for two nights and make yourself at home for your special and only holiday.

- It may be an idea to redesign the car park so that people with blue badges can actually park there, and to encourage guests to take up only one parking space per car.

- It may be an idea to check the internet service when it is advertised as 24 hour.

- And when and should there be the inclination, perhaps an organisational review could take place considering the inconsistencies and contradictions between what is said the Hebasca does, and what some guests experience.

Good Luck Hebasca.

Dear SKScotland,

First and foremost I think it is only correct to point out that we did not request the removal of your original review. Clearly due to the offensive nature of your review towards our beautiful seaside town and great guests the administrators of this site found it wholly inappropriate too and decided to remove it themselves. However I note your “new” review and our response remains the same, for good measure please see it below:

Dear SKScotland,

Wow – this review must have taken you some time. It sounds like we got off to a bad start, and never found our way into your affections, which is a shame. As I respond to this, I note that over 90% of our reviews are ‘Very Good’ or above, so yours definitely stands out.

We’re a cheeky, fun-loving, no-nonsense hotel with a hearty grill restaurant; obviously this isn’t for everybody. We are very honest about who we are on our website so, when you booked your ‘Just Right’ Dreaming Den online, you’d have seen the measurements for the room (11m²-ish), and what it included. Hence, we too, are confused at how you came to choose us – it was clearly far from a match made in heaven!

We have considered your review and there are three things we would like to apologise to you for:

1. That we didn’t take extra special care to facilitate your dietary requirements when you arrived; we are, however, pleased that we managed to get the milk and bread you required for your breakfast.

2. The error with your ‘Welcome’ email, we have addressed this issue and thank you for flagging it up.

3. That there wasn’t a toothbrush holder in your bathroom; we’ll need to look into getting some of these.

However, most importantly…

We would like to apologise, on your behalf, for any offence you cause to existing and future guests with your derogatory comments about the cars they choose to drive, and your prejudiced opinion of the lives they choose to lead. We do not share your opinions.

There are three things that we will not apologise for:

1. That we tried to make you feel welcome by chatting to you and trying to make you smile

2. Our fire safety procedures – these are incredibly important to us. They are clearly described under ‘F’ for ‘Fire’ in your in-room guide and on the back of your door. Having recently opened, we have been assessed by a fire safety officer who was very happy with the measures we have in place.

3. That you couldn’t find the instructions for accessing the internet – they were under ‘I’ for ‘Internet’ in your in-room guide and we were not aware of any issues with the connectivity during your stay. Admittedly, there is no ‘T’ for ‘Television’ in the guides but we’ve never had anybody ask how to turn the TVs on before, so we’ll consider this.

In conclusion, we hope there’s no hard feelings and we wish you the best of luck for future holidays; we note that you’ve left three TripAdvisor reviews to date, all of which have rated the hotels as ‘Terrible’ - you would appear to have been rather unfortunate.

Take care,

Chris Bailey-Lewis

I dont usually write reviews however because the hotel is new I thought they deserve one and to be honest I always read reviews before I book anywhere so it seemed only right to write one. it always seems to be the one's that have a terrible experience that write them, so we all need to start letting people know how good something is as well.
We booked this hotel on a late Saturday afternoon for a stay that night just for a little husband and wife night away. I was hoping to use the Travelzoo voucher however it stated on the Travelzoo website that it was not allowed to be used on 27th July for some reason, so I booked direct with the hotel paying £165 for Bed, breakfast, evening meal. We live in south Devon and only had a short drive to Bude. We did need to use our GPS on our mobile to find it as we forgot to print off directions, but we soon found the hotel. On arrival the hotel looked good, clean and contemporary. Parking was a godsend as well. The staff were all quite pleasant and we were shown to our rooms by a lovely young lady. We noticed that all the staff wore jeans with a hotel logo shirt/blouse which me and my husband thought was a great idea. Not too stuffy for the every day type of person. Our room was of a reasonable size, one of the better rooms, however it was quite warm as the windows do not open normally, just a fraction, presume this is our normal health and safety bureaucracy gone mad! Aircon would have been a good investment however England does not normally have heat waves that often! The bathroom was of a good size and the shower was lush! The only winge would be a shelf in the bathroom for all your toiletries! I did happen to mention this to Wayne, the owner's son. More about them later!
We dined in the restaurant and that was excellent, typical American type grill, lots of meat, so be aware you vegetarians, however as we are meat lovers it satisfied our needs. The dinner was huge, ribs and chicken, and we did not manage to eat it all as we had starters, no need for them! The decor was great, very contemporary, very clean. Breakfast was as good as dinner, plenty of it. The staff were all attentive at dinner and breakfast, always asking if you needed anything else.
After dinner we vacated to the bar, well this became quite amusing. Two drunken lads, very nice lads, friends of the manager's befriended us, we found them amusing and friendly, however, some people could of found them irritating and could of been a little intimidated by them! Then we were joined by the owner's and their friends, of the hotel, who are South African, they were very friendly people, a little worse for wear, especially the son, but amusing also. However I would say if we had not been normal, evey day, well travelled people, with 3 sons of our own, who are also normal so to speak, with a sense of humour, then the whole situation could cause a stir with other quests! Just be aware of who is a quest of the hotel and who isn't! Because at one stage we were asked if we were guest by the owner's son whilst he was causing havoc with his mother! Thus said, it did make our evening and we had a good time with them all, because that is the type of people we are. Chris makes a great piña colada and a Bloody Mary, neither of these are on the menu, however he still obliged. Nothing seemed too much trouble for all the staff. There did seem to be a little friction between Chris and the owner, and we were also told this, so guys maybe you need to sort your differences out, as other guests would be put off by this! All in all we had a great night away, the bed was so comfy, the food in the restaurant is to die for, the location is great, and Bude is a wonderful place. However do not go if you are stuffy and prefer places like The Ritz! This hotel is for the every day, 'normal' family/couple/groups who deserve a little comfort and relaxation in their life, filled with young and lively staff who go out of their way to satisfy your needs, at a fraction of the cost of a 5* hotel. I hope Hebasca strives onwards and upwards towards the future. Well done guys!
We will definitely be returning and have already purchased a voucher from Travelzoo, so just need to book a date! See you all again soon.

Dear Sally-Anne-48

Thank you very much for your review. It is great to hear that you had such a lovely stay at our hotel and that you enjoyed the contemporary relaxed atmosphere we are trying to create at Hebasca. We have been working very hard over the past 9 weeks (at almost 100% occupancy!) to bring a totally new concept to our beautiful Cornish coast. I was pleased to hear that you had an enjoyable evening in our cocktail bar and got a chance to meet the owners who pass on their regards and have said how nice it was to meet you and your husband!

Our grill restaurant is a huge hit and is very popular with residents and non-residents alike and I will be sure to pass on your comments to chef, the ribs and chicken combo is one of our most popular dishes!

Our team are all vibrant people who go out of their way to try and cater for all of our guest’s needs and so I am so glad to hear you and your husband experienced this, as you say we do try our very best to offer a 5* service at a fraction of the cost!

I am so happy to hear that you have decided to book again with us and we look very forward to having you back with us. It would be great if you could introduce yourselves to me when you next stay as I would love to buy you a drink as it is always special to meet returning guests.

Take care and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

I stayed here with my boyfriend for one night, having taken advantage of the travelzoo deal (£99 for one night stay including dinner and breakfast). When we booked, the staff were really lovely and accommodating, agreeing to change the date when they weren't required to and calling back when they said they would, so we were really looking forward to our stay having been given such a good initial impression. The hotel is easy to find and we found a space in the car park and were given a warm welcome by the staff. Tom checked us in and showed us to our room, he's lovely and very helpful and polite, definitely an asset to the place. The room was compact but spotlessly clean and well fitted out, yes you only get a small space to hang your clothes and no chest of drawers but we were only staying one night so didn't really care about that. We spent the afternoon on crooklets beach and I was glad I thought to phone at about 4.30pm and book a table for dinner that night as 6.45 and 8.45 were the only time slots left available at that time - my suggestion would be to ask guests to book a time for dinner when they check in, if dinner is included and they're only staying one night, as if I hadn't thought to call fairly early I guess we would have had to eat at a not very desirable time. So we came down to dinner, and the menu is very impressive if you like meat, which we do so that was good. When ordering drinks I asked the waiter how much wine was in the jug of sangria which at £15 is not cheap, so wanted to make sure it wasn't mostly lemonade! He told me it was a full bottle which seemed reasonable so we ordered it. It was really nice, and the lady who made it asked for our feedback which we thought was good, however it didn't taste like a full bottle of wine had gone into it so I checked with her and she said it was 3/4 of a bottle, which was a bit annoying as it wasn't what we were told before we ordered it! But I didn't want to make a fuss as we were getting such a good deal on the meal. The food was really lovely and the staff kindly wrapped it up for us as there was no way we could finish it all. Another slight criticism though, we were asked if we wanted dessert which we sadly declined, but then were asked if we could make sure we left within the next ten minutes as someone else was waiting for the table. We were leaving anyway so it wasn't a problem, but I have never had this said to me in a restaurant and found it a bit odd, as if we had stayed for dessert then we would obviously have been there quite a bit longer so didn't see the point of being asked to move along really! We had a quiet night's sleep and breakfast the next day was lovely, the food was outstanding again, i really recommend the blueberry pancakes, absolutely no complaints there. So overall we were really happy with our stay and would come back again.

Dear Yb4412

Thank you for your review. It’s is lovely to hear that our staff accommodated you during the booking stage and that they left you with a great first impression. I will be sure to pass on your thanks to Tom, he is a key member (as all are) of our team.

Thank you for your suggestion in relation to booking guests into the restaurant when they check in, previously we have not done this as we have not wanted to appear “pushy” by trying to get people to dine with us. However when it is busy (as it usually is!), we do need to ensure that our guests can dine at a time that suits them and so I will ensure we implement this as a policy going forward.

I am sorry the you heard mixed messages regarding the Sangria, I will personally ensure that all staff are correctly trained about the ingredients of our drinks so that this cannot happen again. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it pleases me to no end that we got it spot on for you, our blueberry pancakes are extremely popular and the best way to start your day!

It was lovely to have you stay with us at Hebasca, and we look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

Before we write our review if anyone reads the drivel posted below please only do so as a comedy element, anyone this fussy and inclined to write in such tongues should only look for unnhabited health farms on a remote island..............................So, onto our stay, we booked through the offer on TravelZoo which was one of the best choices we've made for a long time. We arrived to a very friendly welcome, were shown to our room, which we had upgraded to the suite 'playroom' which was amazing! We had our 6 month old daughter with us and were offered all of the comforts needed to help with our stay. Nothing was too much trouble from a fan to cool us in the room to a phone charger. One point about the play room although the room itself is faultless and very large if you are after an early night unfortunately it is above the restaurant so quite noisy until around 11.30, but the staff did apologise for this and offer us a discount for the invonvenience. We ate in the restaurant, which labelled as a Grill we expected Steak and Burgers and guess what......we had amazing Steak and Burgers, although I would have loved to try the 40 oz Steak I couldn't quite bring myself to give it a go. The service was good a little manic at times but it's a new venture, was booked out (turning people away) and all of the staff were working extremely hard. Overall this Hotel is a great place to stay, newly refurbished, not fully open yet and in it's early stages. Best of luck for the future Hebasca we will be staying again and recommending you to family when they come to visit.

Dear IanandNikkiCornwall,

Thank you so much for your excellent review of our hotel.

I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed our playroom, our suite is very popular and is a great room with plenty of little quirks in it to make your stay all the more enjoyable.

Our staff try their best to meet all the needs of our guests and I am glad to hear that you experienced this level of service from our team. I am sorry to hear that you found the room a little noisy, but I am very glad to hear that you received an apology and a good will gesture. During the summer months the hotel does get very busy with plenty of residents and non-residents enjoying our hearty grills and burgers, which I am glad to hear you enjoyed (the 40oz Rib Eye steak is a massive challenge steak and I as lovely as it is, I would not recommend it for one!!).

We are working very hard on all aspects of our new hotel (including our service levels) and aim to bring our guests the best possible service in a clean, contemporary and fun hotel.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel soon and thank you very much for recommending us to your friends and family.
