“A lovely stay.”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

Poppies is a lovely hotel. We booked late and only the small ground floor room (room 9) was available - however the owner told us this before we booked so we knew what to expect. The bed was large and very comfortable and although space was tight in the room we were fine. A couple of days into our stay our shower began to malfunction, the plumber was called but was unable to fix it that day, so as someone had checked out of one of the superior rooms (room 7) we were moved into this room. This was a great room, spacious and very well appointed with a large en-suite. The food in the restaurant was lovely - very good breakfasts including haggis! The evening menu offers an excellent range of tempting choices using local produce. The hotel staff are lovely, nothing is too much trouble. There is a cosy bar with a huge array of local whiskies where you can relax in the evening and if you are as lucky as we were with the weather you can sit outside and enjoy a drink in the sunshine. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a stay in this lovely part of Scotland.

My husband and I know Callander well and decided to treat ourselves to a night away (without the kids!!) to what we thought would be a bit of luxury. The hotel itself is lovely as is the location but our room was a huge disappointment as it was so small and poky There was only space for one of our bags in the wardrobe and the other we had to leave on the floor and climb over - There were very few drawers so we couldn't properly unpack. The bathroom has been built into the room but was so small that there was no room for a sink which had to be put freestanding in our bedroom- this had nowhere for toothbrushes etc which we then had to keep on the dressing table. Given the price of the room we were expecting a great deal more for our money. When we mentioned this to the owner she told us this was the smallest room in the hotel but didn't apologise or offer us any money off. We stay in hotels a lot and know you should get for your money - we will definitely not be back.

This is a great hotel, located within walking distance of Callander, a charming town. Based on other hotels in the town, it seems good value and good quality. Thus the 5 out of 5.

Rooms - we had a family room, room 2, at the top of the house. A double bed, plus 2 large sofa beds for the kids. Plenty of space in the room. Furniture was nice, plus comfy chairs. The double bed was good to sleep on. Plenty of lights and decorated nicely.

Hotel - reception, common areas and bar all nicely decorated. Restaurant looked nice, but we didn't eat as we have small children. If you want "new style" this isn't it, it's more older style. The stairs creak and some doors do, but that's the charm of hotels like this. Go stay in Stirling or Glasgow if you need that, plus pay for it. Also great grounds and plenty of parking.

Location - Easy to walk to town and the tesco express. Plenty of restaurants nearby or they have one. Lots of attractions close by.

Breakfast - excellent choice and quality. Very nice, fresh ingredients you can tell. Lovely jam, fresh fruit, juices and cooked breakfast.

Owners - great and very helpful. John gave us lots of tips and does a mean cooked breakfast!

Overall a lovely hotel, friendly, small and recommended.

Small notes for future users: wifi doesn't always work at the top of the house, bit it's free and thus use the bar area... Guests bring shower gel/shampoo. For us, the hotel food looked lovely, but a tiny bit costly for children. The surroundings may warrant it, but our two hardly eat! We ate in the town and at The Old Rectory, 75 metres away, you don't get the surroundings, but the food was good. That's just a matter of preference and how much your children eat!

My wife and I attended a murder mystery night at this hotel at the beginning of March and we enjoyed every bit of our stay here.

Firstly, the hotel itself is amazing. It's in a lovely location (the picturesque town of Callander) and has beautiful views of the stunning surrounds. Our stay here was made all the more great by the excellent service and friendliness of the ever attentive staff. Our room was fantastic (Room 6), right above the bar. It was spacious and very clean, with an extremely comfy bed.

One of the best things about this hotel is the food. I cannot speak highly enough of the standard of food at the restaurant in this hotel, it is fine dining at its best. As for the murder mystery night itself, it was truly excellent. A special mention must go to the actors at Blitz Entertainment for putting on a truly remarkable show.

All in all, with the full package of 1 night stay, 3 course evening meal and breakfast and the murder mystery show, this was unbelievable value. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice relaxing break. We can't wait to go back.

P.S. keep your eyes open for the next murder mystery night around the end of October / start of November, you wouldn't want to miss it.

Room Tip: While speaking to other guest staying, I believe all the rooms are great. However, I particularly li...

We stayed only one night unfortunately but had fortunately booked a superior room.
The whole experience was delightful from greeting on arrival through an excellent dinner comfortable spacious room and cosy, interesting bar.
I've just read a poor review and unless the place has changed remarkably since April 2012 I don't know what on earth they are talking about!

Room Tip: I didn't see the standard rooms but our "superior" one was just that! We had windows...

We stayed in the Poppies Hotel for one night in a double room. The room was very nice and the whole place was spotless. The room was very quiet and we had a great night sleep. We ate in the evening at the restaurant and it was superb. The meals were greatly presented and wonderfully tasty. The breakfast was also brilliant. A wholly excellent experience and I will be back again soon.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front get great morning light and are very quiet.

We were able to stay for only one night this time - but we will definitely be going back. The hotel is spotless and immaculately presented throughout. We paid a bit more for one of the 'superior' rooms which was extremely comfortable with a king-size bed and plenty of space for a chair and small sofa. The en-suite was also spacious with both bath and shower. Food at both dinner and breakfast was superb in both content and presentation and staff were first class. It is clear that the owners take a great pride in every aspect of their hotel and an impressive programme of refurbishment has been undertaken. All that is really lacking at present is a residents' lounge but there are plans to create one during the current season. This is a first class place to stay - relaxing, warm, comfortable, pleasant and good value for money. We will look forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: Some rooms are up two flights of stairs so, if this is a problem, take advice when booking.
