Description: Restaurant Hywel Jones, part of the Lucknam Park Hotel in Wiltshire, is a timelessly elegant Michelin-starred affair. Located in a listed Palladian mansion, the restaurant resides in the stately home’s original ballroom. With magnificent chandeliers and Venetian mirrors, the restaurant has a grand view overlooking 500 acres of parkland and a mile-long drive lined with beech and lime trees. The menu, overseen by Head Chef Hywel Jones, makes use of the finest local and organic produce, as well as the hotel’s herb garden. Our favourite dishes include the pot roast of Roundway Hill pork belly with pan-fried foie gras, caramelised apples, baby leeks, girolles and sauce aux espices; and the pan roast Scottish diver scallops with tomato tatin, aubergine puree and aged balsamic dressing.

We went here to celebrate a birthday.

Our pre-lunch drinks service was superb and the lovely lounge we were seated was extremely comfortable and relaxed....almost too comfortable!

Lunch itself was delicious but was not without its problems:

(i) the vegetables that were to be served with the two ladies main course were served to the gents leaving the ladies plates looking rather empty! The staff rectifed this by providing additional vegetables, however, as these were freshly cooked - we had a wait of 15 minutes.

(ii) our table in the dining room was situated in the dining room doorway - an external door was continually opening sending a cold draft onto our table. The staff within the dining room tried their best to keep closing it but, staff from other parts of the building were continually in/out of the external door and for whatever reason did not think it was necessary to close the door behind them. It was so cold, that if offered this table again I would without hesitation decline the table and return home.

(iii) to end our meal we asked for coffee in the lounge area. We were informed that this wasn't possible due to afternoon tea being served there and we could have coffee at our dining table. I'm afraid the draughty table situation was the deciding factor that we would head home. Upon leaving I looked in the lounge area - this was completely empty. It was very disappointing that staff were unprepared to check availability!

(iv) A charge of £1 per person is automatically added to the bill for the hotel to pass on to their Charity!

Would I return? Yes but not in a hurry.

Great place to stay i was only there for the one night as i was doing a breakfast cooking course in there.
The staff were great and very helpful i was in the blossom room 3 bedroom was to hot and the bedroom was not as clean as i excepted the bath was not clean with long hairs in it. before useing i ended washing bath out.
breakfast was first class and supper.
Swimming pool was nice and relaxing.

We had the gourmet menu with matching wines and every detail was superb. The canapés with our pre dinners drinks were tasty and exciting. The staff were lovely throughout. Every course of the meal was beautifully presented and delicious and the cheese was out of this world!
We had trouble finding the hotel in the dark (did a lap of the park by mistake and then couldn't find the restaurant but once inside we felt truly pampered. It,s not a cheap meal by any means but for a special occasion it is perfect. We were getting slightly miffed at the wait for coffee at the end back in the library but then the waiter turned up with perfect coffee plus several tasty chocolates and melt in the mouth macaroons.
We didn't,t want this evening to end.

We went to Lucknam Park for a double Birthday meal, and had a really nice time. The dining room was presented excellently and the food is what you'd expect from a single starred restaurant. The badly managed staff unfortunately let it down.

I'm writing this review for feedback to the restaurant on all the little things that were not quite right.

Staff and service

- We were told that they could 'squeeze us in' on a Thursday evening, to arrive to a nearly empty restaurant. We were on a round table on the other side of the room to the other four or five sittings and felt the lack of atmosphere.
- There was no obvious heirachy within the staff. There was an older man who we first thought was the maitre d, but later didn't see much of him, and a younger man in a tuxedo took over. This mis-balance was just strange.
- At one point the waitress poured fizzy water in my half full wine glass. It's ok to make mistakes, but it should have been fixed with a fresh glass immediately, with no questions. I was asked if I'd like it to be replaced which created the difficult situation. This wasn't later resolved by the maitre d, and there were no omissions on the bill.
- We had the wine flight, and the sommelier at one point served us two glasses of wine with one course (a white and a red) because he 'was taking a break'. Unbelievable!
- We were half way through the explanation of the cheeses, when the man in the tuxedo came over and took over. If the first waiter wasn't capable, then he shouldn't have started.
- We chose to have coffee in the sitting room, and were walked through to the only room without a fire on, where a waitress spent her time puffing up the other sofas for the next day's guests.
- We said our goodbyes to around five staff at the exit, and none offered to help us with umbrellas into the taxi.


- The food was presented differently to each guest. Some were mirrored, with the meat on different sides. Some had varying sized garnishes.. It was all just a bit random for a michelin starred restaurant.
- Desert was a fruit sorbet, served mid December. It was totally out of place.
