“Wish this was local to me!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014

We were visiting Christchurch for the first time - I'd done a little research beforehand & saw good reviews of The Kings Arm Restaurant. We found it really easily in a beautiful spot ... we thought we were on a 'sandwich/soup + drink' budget so were delighted to be offered a 'special' of soup + main + drink for £10 ... and the food was divine! Some lovely beef & veg broth, followed by a beautiful piece of fresh hake on puy lentils with green leaves ... my husband had tarragon mouse stuffed chicken. The produce was clearly great quality, delicious and perfect portion size all served efficiently with a smile.
This standard of restaurant where I live, in the Cotswolds, would be chargng £25-ish for the same sort of food and another £3 for the bread .... with a serving of pretention on the side! (hence we very rarely eat out which made this extra special!) I wish we had The Kings Arms local to us ... if we travel back to Christchurch in the future I will be sure to drop in again.
Thank you.

“Good value lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014

We hadn't been to the Kings Arms for some years and were tempted in by the the lunchtime special: soup and a main course with a drink for £10. Although we found the rather quiet restaurant a bit plain it was clean and modern. The service was good (although the number of times our glasses of tap water were topped up was over frequent!). There was a generous serving of a very creamy vegetable soup, not quite what we expected, followed by shredded shin of beef, piled up as is fashionable on some mashed potato and some greens. For the price we paid this was fine but I wouldn't have liked to pay more. Overall it represented good value but I am not sure we would return, there are so many good value eateries around.

“Mixed feelings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014

Our group had rather mixed feelings after eating here one Saturday evening. Some thought the service was good, others found it a bit haphazard though all staff were friendly enough. Starters - from a good and quite interesting range - got the thumbs up. Mains, including specials - from a fairly limited range especially for vegetarians, were voted goodish though a shared fish dish did get an 'excellent'.
Small but clean and modern toilets,
Main complaint was the fact that this is yet another dining room where, with boarded floor, there are no soft furnishings or fittings to help balance the acoustics and so the noise levels are excessive, especially with large family groups also dining there.
Just squeaks home with four star rating.

“Good food choice, well presented”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014

One of our favourite restaurants in Christchurch is the Jetty, the sister of the Kings Arms.
Having eaten at the Kings a couple of year's ago, we left unimpressed - but now it is under the wing of Alex Aitken, so we thought we would give the King's another try.

There is an excellent choice of dishes on the menu and everything that was ordered was well presented and without delay, considering it was a busy Saturday night.

My view is that everything was as it should have been, but no frills and no real dining experience. When we go go the Jetty, we feel as though it is a special occasion on every visit.
We didn't feel special in the Kings and would have no reason to book gain.

Just one point and I am not penny pinching - but no bread on the table, no nibbles with drinks etc
When I made the reservation on-line we looked at the menus and the January special was a taster menu for £25 per head (instead of 29.95 per head - January special).
We we offered the tasting menu but not at the January special price...so this kind of set's the scene.

Overall an OK experience, but I would think twice before returning.

“Best in the centre of Christchurch IMHO”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014 via mobile

Sunday lunch there today, booked on line & prob 6th time we've been there, but first review. Excellent staff, very smiley & attentive without being in your face. Starter of local crab & Alex Aitken's (Chef Proprietor) twice baked soufflé, then superb sirloin of beef (better than any carvery), partner had duck shepherds pie, no dessert but all washed downward with a superb Tempranillo & Hildon water of course. Love it, 2 courses are only £15, 3 are £17.50, difficult to beat this. thank you we'll be back.

Thank you for your kind review. The 15mile menu has been a big hit since it was introduced here, we are constantly updating the menu to offer a variety of local produce to our regular guests. We do hope to see you in the near future.
