We stopped by late on a May Bank Holiday to find Robin just about to close up for the day. We got chatting & found Robin's enthusiasm for his job past & present informative & in some ways very entertaining. You normally have to prebook tours, but the 4 of us were offered a personal underground experience there & then. Robin recounts his former mining days in the Forest, & takes you along the drift into the mine workings, where he still extracts small quantities of coal. He has erected handrails & concrete walkways where necessary, but stout footwear is recommended as there are areas of shallow standing water. No crawling is required as the tunnel height is around 5 foot. Helmets & lights are provided. An excellent insight into a bygone era with a guide who is a real 'Forester' who can recount a tale or two during a visit!
