“very nice break”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

We have just returned from a weekend break at this hotel and we really enjoyed it. The reception staff were very helpful. The rooms were very clean and spacious, large bed, bath room basic (could benefit from refurb) nice to have a decent size kettle and good choice of tea, coffee etc. Only slight winge was one packet of cheap biscuits! We had lunch when we arrived which was very nice and reasonably priced. We really enjoyed the meal in the evening - part of the deal, and I have to say you have real gem in Lucy who was very attentive at all the right times, well done. Breakfast was fantastic as well with a very good wide choice. The hotel is situated in a place were there is lots of walking from the hotel, my only regret was not having my dog with me - next time!!

Dear Naianiretak ,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent stay with us.
I am delighted to read that you had a great stay with us and are looking to return with your dog in the near future, to further explore the Royal Forest of Dean.
It was heartening to read that you found all of our team helpful and pleasant and I have passed on your gracious comments to the team.
With regard to the bathrooms it is extremely difficult to refurbish them without altering the character however we are constantly working to improve them.
I am pleased that you enjoyed all of your meals with us and that breakfast set you up for your days out and about.
It is always good for our team to know their efforts have been well received and appreciated.
Thank you once again for leaving your review and we look forward to you plus dog returning soon.
Best wishes

We've just returned from a Travelzoo break with friends and it was excellent in every respect. Beautiful room (7,main house) with super-king bed, bath and shower and 2 easy chairs in the generously sized room. Morning coffee comes with home made biscuits as did afternoon tea. Dinner was splendid and the owner has sensibly allowed you to choose from the a la carte menu using your Table d'hote £s allowance. Good wine at sensible prices. Excellent freshly cooked breakfast with fresh fruit and pastries too, served in the restaurant which just oozes history. There are lovely walks from the hotel itself, including the delightful Sculpture Trail. Symonds Yat is only 20 mins in the car. All the reception staff were extremely helpful and the restaurant team are efficient and very smart in their black aprons. We shall return.

Room Tip: Room 7 is great. The only issue is that being at the front of the hotel there is some traffic noise.

Stayed at the Speech House Hotel to celebrate a birthday and spend a few days cycling in the forest. Couldn't of picked a better Hotel, the location for exploring the forest was perfect and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We stayed in a courtyard room which was very convenient for our bikes and van. We ate in the bar which was really good but the breakfasts were the best. Would definitely go again.

We have been going to the Speech House fairly often over the years for coffee and bar food after walking in the Forest. We decided to go there for our anniversary dinner and were very impressed. Service was excellent, friendly but not in your face, menu choice was good and food to a very high standard but not overpriced and the old Verderas court is full of atmosphere and history. Over time since the change of ownership we have noticed how standards have improved so well done to Management and staff for making The Speech House a pleasure to go to.

For the second time in 12 months we visited the Speech House the first was after a funeral and the most recent for 95th birthday party, on both occasions we were there with 40 or 50 other people.
on both occasions the food was a great disappointment the sandwich choice was adequate but not inspiring, the sausage rolls were of the small frozen type and the cheese puff's had very little cheese taste, the large scones were possible home made the jam was the cheapest possible mixed fruit I think but not sure that they contained any fruit when combined with the cream they clung to the roof of the mouth.on the last visit after paying for the food, tea for two was an extra £5.00

Dear Paul R,
Thank you for taking time to leave a review.
Your heading of "Afternoon Tea" in this instance is misleading. The Organiser of the party chose the Light Buffet menu, not Afternoon Tea. They are completely different.
I have checked back with my Front of House Manager who was on duty and who had nothing but compliments from the organiser of a recent 95th party to which I presume you refer?.
The choice of freshly prepared sandwiches we always offer are, Smoked Salmon, Cheese, Cheese and Pickle, Tuna, Egg Mayonnaise, Ham, Beef & Horseradish, Brie & Cranberry and a selection of Vegetarian ones all on Brown and White Bread. I am sorry that you deem this choice uninspiring.
The Sausage Rolls are the Cocktail sized ones not Transport Café size, and the Cheese Savouries are a matter of individual taste.
With regard to your comments on the Jam and Fresh Clotted Cream that we use, I can assure you that they are both of high quality, not as you insinuate "The cheapest available". As I am sure you are aware, fresh Clotted Cream is of a much thicker consistency and does tend when taken with other food (Scone) will tend to bind and be quite sticky to the palate.
The Menu chosen by the organiser was excluding tea & coffee, however for your information our current price for a pot of tea for one is £2.50 per person and includes home made biscuits.
I am disappointed that you did not approach our F&B Manager at the time to register your dissatisfaction, instead of waiting several weeks to post a review.
As can be seen from our public notice board in the hotel foyer, there are many, letters of thanks for the quality of food and service provided for all such events.
Thank you once again for your review the content of which I have passed on to our team.
Yours sincerely
