I should first declare a bias here - I had my wedding reception at this hotel 17 years ago! However, it has changed hands a couple of times since then and I have not stayed here for 3-4 years. During a one night stay between Christmas and New Year, I was keen to see how it had changed with the latest owners.
Our family of five fitted snugly into one of the courtyard family rooms, with an extra bed. For a longer stay, this would have been crowded but it was fine for the one night. We ate a small evening meal in the orangery, which was of an acceptable standard but not fine dining. Returning to the bar later, my wife and I were disappointed to see that the two real ales were both off. However, my wife's red wine and my G'n'T were pretty good, and we had a relaxed evening chatting and listening to the locals gossip.
Breakfast the next day was a buffet and I was expecting a poor meal, with soggy sausages etc. I am pleased to report that it was excellent, with constant renewal of the hot food and plenty of tea and toast. As with every other encounter during our stay, the staff here were very friendly and efficient. This aspect really made our stay enjoyable, with a level of hospitality that you always hope for in a hotel but rarely find.More
