We stayed here weekend of the 3rd May 2013 and it was fantastic. We were attending a wedding at the nearby Hunters Hall Venue and this place was ideal! Glad we didn't stay at Hunters as Bartles beats it hands down.
We arrived on the Friday, checked in and went out on a bike ride in the nearby area. The landscape lends itself to cycling being so flat and scenic. On our return in the early evening we decided to eat at the Mermaid Pub just next door. (See separate review but excellent)
The following morning we had breakfast and it was lovely. All freshly cooked with local produce including great local sausage. The owners are really friendly and gave us a great bike ride idea for the morning. In the afternoon we went to the wedding had a great time and cycled back in the dark :-)
All round great place to stay and very reasonable rates. The rooms are spacious with massive beds and nice clean showers.
We def return for a long weekend cycling, also I am an avid fisherman but didn't take my rods on this trip. I did however take a stroll round the lakes early one morning. They look really good, lots of features and I saw quite a few decent carp topping.
Book it you won't be disappointed!!

Room Tip: Room 2 is a great double with a nice view.

Wasn't expecting this to be anything different than your stereotypical B&B-how wrong could I have been?
Bartles Lodge is set in beautiful surroundings with three fishing lakes for use by your avid angler...I don't happen to be a fisherman-I just thought that it would be silly not to mention the facilities that the guest house has!
The room that we were presented with was clean, comfortable and modern-tastefully decorated and with everything that we could have needed.
We were only there for one night, but the hostess made us feel very welcome and cooked up a great breakfast for us following our evening at Elsing Hall the night before!
A great guest house-I would think that it would be an AMAZING guest house if you are a fisherman!!

A group of four of us have been enjoying an annual fishing weekend away for nearly 20 years but always till now we've made the trip to Ireland. This year we decided to avoid the cross channel journey, the increasing expense of the euro and the deteriorating fishing in Ireland to try a weekend in Norfolk. After a fair bit of research we settled on Bartles Lodge.

Bartles Lodge is in the village of Elsing not far from East Dereham and consists of a converted stable block containing 6 bedrooms and a residents dining room/function room where breakfast is served. 3 bedrooms overlook one of the (very picturesque) lakes and the other 3, a courtyard with an ornamental fish pond. There are 3 lakes and each is different - very briefly for the fishermen readers one is a match lake, one is a specimen carp lake and the third is a mixed pleasure fishery.

Accommodation is provided on a bed and breakfast basis and what a breakfast it is (see photo). The rooms themselves are clean and basic, we had twin bedded rooms but others are double and there are a mixture of showers and baths. (be sure to specify what you'd like when you book)

While we were there the weather was very, very wet and one thing which would have been useful would have been a drying room or similar where wet clothes and boots etc could be left to dry overnight - apart from that I can't think of anything I'd change.

Evening meals can be taken at the Mermaid Inn just next door to the entrance and this friendly pub really does complement Bartles Lodge by providing great lunches and dinners as well as a full evening's entertainment.

So in summary great fishing, beautiful surroundings, bedrooms looking over the lakes, super breakfasts, a great pub next door and all at a very reasonable cost. I have a feeling I could be visiting Bartles Lodge again.

We had three very nice days at Bartles Lodge. The Macks have made the rooms attractive and comfortable and provide a good breakfast. While well set up for fishermen who come to fish in the small lakes in the grounds, it is a nice relaxing out of the way place to stay for anyone. The congenial pub just steps away does good home cooked food. After a day exploring the interesting area, it was nice to be able to have a good meal and a drink without having to get back in the car.

Thank you Mr and Mrs Mack for a lovely stay.

Thank goodness I didnt read the previous review, before booking our stay at Bartles. Instead we were reccommended by my inlaws. Who do not fish and only stay at top establishments.

Im not saying the previous review was wrong, just that its out of date now.

We went end April 2008. Bartles is now owned by a charming couple called Chris and Jane. From what I remember they took over the place about 18 months ago. And have obviously spent that time doing a complete refurb. The room we stayed in had
a modern clean off white theme. with a white sofa at the foot of the bed. I raised concerns with jane that anglers might mess that up. But it was spotless when we were there.

Also a state of the art, thermal, digital shower. double size, with all manner of water jets etc. perfect for after a days fishing. the bathroom was also modern, and brand new, with a modern minimalist design.

The breakfast was excellent, cereals, juices, fruit, full english. always asked if we wanted more toast or tea.

We could see one of the lakes from our bedroom window. plenty of pheasnts, and rabbits around etc.

Its in a tiny hamlet, and the local pub is just at the end of their private gravel driveway. Fantastic gastro pub food, and selection of real ales. Try Broadside. knocks your socks off!!

Regarding the fishing. i fished one afternoon, a full days, and a late afternoon till 10pm. In all I had 25 carb to 10lb. They go much bigger, and given longer i would have liked to have bagged a 20. their are three lakes, your could say, pleasure, intermediate and specimen. not too much angling pressure, from waht i could see, and all fish were pristine.

We did have some great photos of the place and the fish, but a corrupt memory card kept wiping them.

That was the only downside of our stay.

We liked it so much we extended our stay an extra day.

Whilst the fishing was great, we found it well positioned for daytrips as well, as you could get on the main road to norwich in about 10-15 minutes or go the other way towards the unspoilt north coast as featured in Stephen Frys 'Kingdom'

all in all, absolutely fantastic.

We will be back!!

Paul and Sarah

We booked a week at this place as my husband is a keen fisherman and it advertised two lakes that could be fished. When we got there we were given room 7 which was a worry as they were only supposed to have 6 rooms in total. The room reekend of cigarette smoke, the wallpaper was beginning to peel off the walls and the bathroom was very dark, and on our second day developed a leak so that you squelched when going into it. The owner of the property said that this was because the hand held and erratic shower was leaking, but apart from removing the shower, did very little. This didn't help the general ambiance of the room which felt damp and rather grubby. I had a peek at some of the other rooms and they did look better than
ours but not enough to make me want to ever return. The fishing however was very good as were the breakfasts.

I think that a group of men staying there for the fishing would enjoy
it (some of the fishermen have been visiting for 7 or 8 years), but it's not really a tourist place. It's basically some fishing lakes with accommodation rather, than a nice place to stay with fishing as an activity offered by the owners, which is a shame because with a little bit of effort and some cheap fixing up it could be very nice. It's very central for all the tourist attractions the pub next door does very good food, but it's not a couples or family place and i wouldn't recommend it.
