“Good food, good service.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2012

The recently reopened George has been nicely refurbished. There is a well stocked bar and good selections of beers and ciders, te wine list is not terribly exciting but it's reasonable and well priced. We visited mid week for an evening meal, it wasn't overly busy but the atmosphere was nice. The staff were attentive and took our orders and brought drinks at th right pace, we didnt wait long but we didn't feel they were rushing us either. The menu has a good selection of pub style food, my wife and I both chose steaks which we had cooked differently - we were both satisfied that we got our steaks done to a our liking. It's a simple thing but so often restaurants can't get this right. Since our joint visit my wife has visited for lunch and had an equally good experience. If they keep up this good work the George is going to do well.

Room Tip: Didn;t stay here, just ate, the conservatory is a pleasant room on a sunny evening.

I visited this restuarant on 19 May 2012 as one of a party of 4 as had heard it had recently reopened.

On entering we were immediately ushered towards our table - without any enquiry if we would like to have a pre-meal drink at the bar. Not a good start for us as we do like to have a drink and take time scanning the menu.

On of our party asked the waitress where their meat came from and we were told that it is the chef's secret. This made us think he had something to hide as we all like to support businesses which source their food locally wherever possible. A second request led to us being told it is somewhere within a 30 mile radius - made it sound like it was cash and carry and not a local butcher.

3 of us ordered butterfly prawns but, apparently, the chef did not know what these were as they arrived shell on. My wife sent hers back as she does not like peeling them. Finger bowls were provided for those of us who persevered.

The main course were only average - apart from one (a rump steak which was cooked to the diners liking. The other 3 - two of which were chicken - were served with somewhat soggy chips and my gammon was below the standard I would have expected.

The deserts, 2 creme brulee, 1 apple crumble were of the standard that suggested they were bought in from a wholesale caterer and not home made. The fourth asked for a selection of Ice cream but was told she could only have 3 scoops of one flavour.

To be fair, the waitresses were very pleasant and tried to be helpful but without the support of the chef. Pricewise not too bad but as we can get a better 2 for £10 meal elsewhere they really do need to take stock and put things right. The Hotel had recently closed through lack of trade and re-opened as a restuarant only. Sadly I can see this happening again if more effort is not put into it.

Had our christmas dinner here Food was great. Although I got the wrong main course which I had ordered some weeks previously. The fact that a member of our party called off sick seemed to cause problems. Four of our party were served with their starters and it took one of us to remind them that others were waiting for their starters. The place was very busy but most people were in on preordered christmas meals so realistically shouldnt have been a problem. Only had to ask the persons name to be served the correct food. Bit pricey for food and drinks. £22.95 for meal and £3.80 for a pint of standard bitter.

We stayed for a single night for a family christening.
Easy to find in the town centre, well appointed parking - very busy on a Sunday lunchtime when we arrived.
We arrived early as we'd travelled from South London but checked in without any issues - the room was large and spacious (room 3).
We ate lunch in the bar and then left and got back to the hotel around 7 in the evening. My significant other tasted some of the local beer before venturing up the stairs to try out the huge claw footed roll top bath!
Bed was large and firm - just the way we like it and we slept soundly till morning.
Breakfast was lovely and we departed just after 10am.
Would we stay here again - most definitely!

My wife & i stayed at the george & found it to be an excellent establishment The staff were welcoming well trained &well presented The period hotel has been tastefully updated inthe bedrooms to a good standard whilst retaining the period feel .The restaurant was very good for a market town setting with a very good menu .I would recommend this hotel for both social&business users good value for money with £75 aroom rate very fair if not slightly underpriced.

Room Tip: ask for the main building

The first impression of the hotel is the incredible attentiveness of the staff. There were 8 in our party coming from all over the country for a business seminar just outside Dereham. I was the one who organised the accommodation and really pleased that I found this Hotel.

We had booked a table for Dinner but as some of our party had been delayed by traffic we had to have a much later reservation and as we were experiencing a mini heat wave we were allowed to dine in the conservatory. The porter came and found me to let me know every time one of our party turned up. The waiting staff were very friendly and efficient. the normal breakfast times are from 8 am but we had to be away early in the morning so they opened the restaurant early especially for us

The rooms were spacious comfortable and clean with all the usual trimmings, There was very little noise from the outside.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel
