“Top-notch”
Review of Royal Holloway

Royal Holloway

Lovely green campus, in which spectacular Victorian architecture blends seamlessly with more modern buildings. The educational and sporting facilities are excellent. With a bank branch, a small grocery store and several places to eat and relax, the campus has just about everything a student requires. To top it off, the woodlands on campus are quite delightful - great for a leisurely stroll.

This is an amazing site as you drive the A30. Built by Thomas Holloway (he pioneered advertising in medicine)for women to go to University (unheard of in those days). It is modelled on the Chateau of Chambord in the Loire Valley. Stunning. Part of the University of London now. There are open days and it is well worth a visit.

The main building is absolutely beautiful. In the campus there is a small forest which is simply gorgeous and, actually the whole campus has many nice green spots and beautiful sites. The rooms in the hub are very nice as well, if one wants to spend the night there.

A well kept secret is that Royal Holloway College has clean modern comfortable accommodation at reasonable prices for tourists on the main site. Just log onto their website for details. Breakfast is very good.

The location is a good starting point for visits to Runnymede and the Air Force memorial with it's spectacular views towards Heathrow, the Great Windsor Royal Park, Windsor itself, Virginia Water and Saville Gardens.

RHS "Founders building" was inspired by Chateau Chambord near the Loire; built in redbrick rather than stone. A quick visit to the old college quadrangles is worthwhile as is the college chapel where modern lighting now displays the ornate high ceilings which used to be masked by shadows.

I can't comment on the university or the facilities, but I can say this is mid Victorian architecture that is wonderfully over the top bonkers. It's set around a square and is embellished with all the architectural icing popular at the time. I had guests from overseas and after a wonderful visit to Great Fosters up the road, talk turned to Hogwarts and this is the best example in the area. If you can't visit, check it out on Google Earth.
