The Runnymede on Thames
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Egham
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 17, 2013

Nothing is too much trouble for the happy and helpful staff in this excellent hotel; never obsequious nor simply "going through the motions" the hotel defies all the corporate posturing that is so sadly ubiquitous nowadays..

Rooms are bright and modern - and the "Whitestuff" toiletries welcome - and if you can get a Riverside room, then the coming and going of boats navigating the lock provide a much better entertainment than that which is on the room's TV!

We dined in the buffet style restaurant and the food was wonderful - Ottolenghi type salads vie with a huge range of fish and meaty offerings - and many return trips were made! The breakfast was equally excellent - and the scrambled egg (my benchmark!) was fluffy, fresh, creamy and .... I ought to stop before I get too carried away.

The restaurant staff were attentive, but never intrusive and the manager, Lorenzo welcomed us back like family!

So any complaints? Well it is near Heathrow, so the occasional A380 makes for additional interest as it passes over at 3,000 feet - thank the Almighty for modern whisper jets!

The spa area and gym looked excellent and offered a range of treatments enjoyed by my wife as part of her special birthday celebrations.

This was our fifth stay - and each time we are never disappointed.

An outstanding hotel, and a wonderful way to spend a memorable weekend.

Room Tip: Try to secure one of the River side superior rooms!

Thank you for your review and I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the runnymede found the staff happy and helpful.
I am pleased that you enjoyed watching the boats in the lock from your room and that the White Company toiletries were appreciated.
We are pleased when guests return to the buffet in Leftbank to try the many different salads and large range of meat and fish dishes available at lunch and dinner and I am glad that you almost got carried away with the scrambled egg offering at breakfast - they must have been good!
I am also glad that your wife enjoyed the facilities and treatments in the spa.
All your comments have been passed onto the teams at the hotel as it is feedback like yours that shows them that their efforts are appreciated.
I hope that we will see you again soon and look forward to your 6th stay with us – maybe for your birthday!

The place was recommended to us by a family member who lives nearby and it did not disappoint. The rooms were clean albeit small. The lobby has a cosy feel to it and the restaurant was fine. There is a nice trail along the Thames by the hotel and the hotel staff are very experienced and very good. We were a big group yet they catered to all very efficiently and with a big smile on their face. The rates are good value for money and it shows. Throughout our stay, the place was busy with guests.
If you are heading towards Egham, stay at the Runnymede. It will not disappoint.

The hotel itself is modern and very comfortable. Terrific layout, great breakfast, wonderful couch area to relax and grab a cup of coffee. The pool and facilities are truly amazing. Location and walk on thames is a bonus !

Just two things to think about ... the rooms are modern, and clean, but extremely small ... so don't bring a lot of luggage. The other thing which bothered me was how easily the front desk gave a replacement key to me and in a separate occasion to my 10 year old nephew, never checking an ID. I'd recommend the management refresh their policies there.

That said, I'd definitely stay there again ... terrific hotel !!

Thank you for your review of the hotel. I am pleased that you like the hotel’s interior design, location, great breakfast and the pool. I was concerned by your comments about replacement keys but, having spoken with the Reception Manager we believe that the receptionist recognised you and your nephew as residents as we never normally issue replacement keys to guest bedrooms and have rigorous security procedures in place for the reissuing of guests’ bedroom keycards. These procedures have been reiterated to the whole of the reception team again following your comments.
We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future when you can enjoy our outdoor pool as well as riverside walks in the sunshine!

We spent Easter weekend at the Runnymede Hotel and loved every minute of it. The management have such great staff, friendly, helpful, informative and welcoming. We stayed in Riverview room, looking out to the boats/lock...lovely view. Room was compact but so clevely designed that you needed nothing more. Small touches of sweets left on bed in the evening with a hotel memo/letter regarding putting on an extra breakfast room over the Easter Sunday was very impressive. Definitely recommend for all. We went as a couple and enjoyed the spa facilities (inc ice plunge dip !!) but would love to return with our daughter and try some more of the pamper facilities. Restaurant food quality was delicious, Great service from every person we met, thank you x

Room Tip: Great deal on staying 2 nights with dinner included.

Planned to stay for 2 nights at the Runnymede. Having had an excellent stay at this hotel in summer 2007 we were looking forward to returning. On arrival we were warmly welcomed and the reception staff were excellent. Previously we had a family room which was very good. This time we were given two separate rooms, not even next to each other. One room was tiny, no good if you're claustrophobic and the other room smelt badly. There were hairs on the bathroom floor and on the bed linen. The rooms were not as clean as they should of been. We returned to our room one afternoon to find the cleaner charging his mobile phone on our charger! We had lunch in the main bar area and the service was not good, had to ask twice to be served as they didn't seem to notice us. We had dinner in the Lock Bar and the food was excellent, as was the service and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was adequate and the floor wasn't clean. Not what you'd expect from a 4 star hotel! When we asked for milk, they took a milk jug from a used table. Having had all these disappointments we left after 1 night and will not be returning!

Thank you for your review of the hotel and I am pleased that you that you thought the food and staff in The Lock Bar and Kitchen were excellent. I am disappointed to hear that the other elements of your stay were not up to our normal standard and in fact not representative of your experience previously. I have spoken with our Head Housekeeper you would like to apologise for the poor housekeeping standards you encountered during your stay. We usually pride ourselves on our high standards as you will read in other reviews. I have also spoken with our leftbank restaurant manager who has in turn spoken with the member of staff in regards to the re-using of the milk jug at breakfast. This is clearly not acceptable and nor is it our standard practice. Please accept our sincere apologies for your disappointing stay, I would like the opportunity to restore your faith in the hotel and if you would like to discuss this further please email: spencerc@therunnymede.co.uk
