“Romance and charm in abundance”
Reviewed July 29, 2011

An overnight stay with dinner and breakfast. We stayed in the main house in room 'moat II' which was a nice blend of old and new and overlooked the beautiful craft/topiary garden. The dinner was top notch with hot and cold running waiters! And the silver service breakfast was lovely and fresh with lots of choice. The hotel is an experience not to be missed.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the main house.

We spent our first night as a married couple here and I must say the setting was perfect and the service, on the whole, was excellent. We stayed in the Queen Anne suite and had a DB&B deal which, whilst expensive, included champagne and 3 courses from either their al a carte or market menus. We tipped the waiting staff a substantial 20% in cash at the end of our eveing and so when we checked out the next day and were told we had a £200 drinks bill on our room we called it in to question since we'd been very moderate drinkers that eveing. It turned out that they'd charged us additional costs for the al a carte over the market menu and had also added a service charge! What a cheek! After some negotiation and some bull**** about their computer system going down and that's why all the extras had been added, plus my husband having to look up the email they'd sent him confirming we'd been offered either menu in the deal, we managed to get them to take an abhorrent and unnecessary £150 off the bill. It left a bitter taste. Do stay here, the setting is lovely, but double check absolutely everything on your bill. The girl at reception was very shifty about showing us our itemised bill and I suspect this sort of thing happens here regularly.

Room Tip: Stayed in the Queen Anne suite and it was lovely with a great bathroom and lots of space. Is much bi...

Thank you for your review. We welcome all feedback and I’m only sorry that you left the hotel on a such a negative note.

I would like to reassure you that there is no conspiracy to defraud and if anything your comments point to a lack of training in the restaurant where all these discrepancies should have been picked up. We do not have a policy of soliciting both a cash gratuity and a service charge and if the restaurant had followed the correct procedure and asked you to sign your account at the end of your meal this would never have happened.

You are entirely justified in your complaint and we can only apologise that it left such a sour taste.

Finally, I’d like to assure that a new computer system has been recently installed and continues to be absorbed into the operation.

We were married at great fosters on the 9th July 2010, we chose the tithe barn/orangery package, the day & evening were absolutely magical, admittedly help by the stunning venue and staff, we viewed all the local venues but none of them are in the same league as great fosters, we returned last night for our 1st anniversary and the food & wine were outstanding as were the staff again, 10/10

My daughter had her wedding reception here and although the reception was super, unfortunately the two day stay was marred by inefficiency and surliness from the reception staff and cleaners.
At these prices I would expect the correct rooms to be allocated, an apology when realisation dawned that the hotel had got it wrong and certainly not to have a grumpy cleaner tutting and sighing about us using two beds in a twin room!
Having spoken with a manager the next day, we did have a small amount removed from our bill but sadly we will not be returning and I would urge anyone who has booked a long time in advance to double and triple check your bookings to avoid inconvenience.

We stayed at this hotel for a wedding. When I booked (by phone) I clearly stated the date, the name of the persons getting married and the code for the special room rate. In spite of this when the confirmation email arrived the date was wrong and I had to book again so I was not impressed.
The building and the grounds are simply splendid and I suppose that is what justifies the high prices. Buta hotel of this standard should not feel that this is enough. We had a basic room and although well appointed it was quite small and only had one easy chair. I expect better for this standard of hotel.
The buffet choice at breakfast was limited and the cooked breakfast was adequate but limited. We were not asked what sort of toast we wanted and were provided with 4 slices, 2 white, 2 brown. I had a better breakfast 3 days later at a Premier Inn!
Would I stay here again? Only if someone else was paying and the food improved.

Room Tip: Check your booking. Expect noise from aircraft.

Whilst there is no denying this is a beautiful hotel, the service is a disgrace, not helped by the language barrier of the staff. Our rooms were booked almost 12 months in advance and yet they failed to get it right on checking in, meaning we stayed ovenright just to pack again in the morning for a move to another room. The following morning house cleaning barged into the room bag on 1100hrs to start turning over the room, tutting on her way out as we zipped up our cases to vacate. For this amount of money there is no way the service should let this place down. Perhaps we caught it over its busiest period, however I would not recommend this due to it being over priced for the quality of service I received. Shame as it really has so much to offer.

Probably built as a Royal Hunting lodge and very much a stately home since the 16th century, Great Fosters is now a prestigious hotel, awarded 4 red stars by the AA. Set amongst 50 acres of gardens and parkland, the hotel is a Grade One listed building blessed with the grandeur of 16th century England and luxurious modern facilities. Its past is evident in the mullioned windows, tall chimneys, fireplaces and brick finials, while the Saxon moat, crossed by a Japanese bridge, surrounds three sides of the formal garden. All the suites and bedrooms are individually decorated. The bedrooms in the Main House are adorned with tapestries and antiques, whilst the bedrooms in The Cloisters are more contemporary in style. The refurbished Coach House offers luxurious accommodation with the latest plasma screens, i-pod docking stations and fabulous bathrooms. The hotel has two restaurants - The Estate Grill has been awarded two rosettes by the AA and serves a simple and seasonal menu with many of the dishes using produce grown on the estate and cooked on a Josper grill. The Tudor Room was awarded a Michelin star and three rosettes by the AA in October 2016 and is an intimate sophisticated restaurant open for lunch on a Thursday & Friday and for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday inclusive. ... more   less
