I returned to the Lough Erne with a party of guests. Our accommodation was comfortable and to the standard that is expected of a 5* hotel. Dinner from the extensive menu was lovely however, the same can't be said of the breakfast the next morning.

As a party we surveyed the breakfast menu and noticed that there was a choice of, for example porridge or an Irish breakfast - but not both! The males in the party were not best pleased.

Other than that, the Lough Erne Resort lived up to its status.

Stayed here in Feb 2012 and meant to write a review earlier! Really enjoyed our stay and can't wait to return. Value for money was one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Our room was large with a big bathroom and shower. The food was great and the atmosphere in the bar fantastic there was a pianist playing on the Saturday night who really added to our night. The grounds are also lovely for an early morning stroll!

I recently stayed at the resort with a group of friends, staying in the lodges with a spa treatment and dinner as part of a deal. The resort itself is in an idyllic setting, the lodge we stayed in was lovely, nicely decorated, spacious and luxurious.
The spa again was aesthetically lovely, but i was somewhat surprised that there was no access to lockers or any secure area, also there were no individual cubicles to change in - possibly not a lot to expect from a 5* hotel. Treatment was pleasant, as was the relaxation area.
Things really went downhill when our group arrived at the restaurant, the female who appeared to be in charge of the restaurant barked at us that our table wasn't booked for another 15min, there were no pleasantries, no suggestion to have a drink at the bar while we waited. She was rude and abrasive. When we did get our table and were ordering meals there was one waitress assigned to our group of twenty - not the most efficient way of looking after guests. As a result there was long delay between main course and dessert and several of us had to give up waiting on our coffees which never arrived.
The next morning at breakfast I was again somewhat disappointed, the food was adequate - but we had to repeatedly stop staff and ask for the simple things like toast, tea and coffee. I did notice that the large american group behind us had no such problems.
Overall this resort has so much potential it is a real shame that the service lets it down so badly. If they don't want to have groups there, they shouldn't accept bookings. Given that they have been in administration it would seem foolish for them to have allienated a large group of potential future customers.

Spa -
Had the aromatherapy message. The music in the room was too low so I was very aware of what the masseuse was doing - could hear her knocking into things and rubbing oil in her hands. The lights in the massage room were not dim enough. Both meant that it was difficult to fully relax and enjoy the treatment. There was a lovely area to relax after the massage and we were brought fruit and peppermint tea after our massages. Jacuzzi and swimming pool were lovely.
When we finished with the spa treatment the lady behind the spa desk asked us to wait without explaining why and then asked us to pay for our treatment even though it was included in the price -this is not a 5star service.

Food
Food was tasty.
Service was good although we had to ask if we could order our wine after trying to catch the waiters eye a few times. When we'd ordered the waiter poured huge glasses of wine for the first few people and the realised she was running out of the bottle which mean the last people had small glasses. Further it was white wine so it would have been nicer to have small glasses of chilled wine. Again not a massive problem but not 5 star service. The food was very tasty.
Breakfast was disappointing as we were served it in a room that must have been a small conference room which meant the tables were too small for the room and it was difficult to get served. When we did order the waiter brought someone else's breakfast and you could see others wandering around trying to match breakfasts to people. Not 5 star.

Accommodation
Stayed in one of lodges which was very pretty and had a beautiful view of the lake. Beds very comfy.

Overall a nice place to stay if you get a package for c.£150 but don't pay 5 star prices as you won't get 5 star quality!

I brought my friend away to the hotel as a birthday present. The place is beautiful, but we had a few issues during our stay.

The pros:
1. The best part of this hotel has to be Neil from concierge. He is the most helpful staff member i have come across in any hotel. He gave us a dvd player and lots of dvds to borrow, and was just so accommodating in general with lots of little thing we asked for when we were there! There was also a very friendly, polite receptionist working there, but i didnt catch her name. She found my car keys for me when i lost them, which was much appreciated.
2. The food was lovely - we ate lunch in the bar and had dessert there in the evening. The breakfast was lovely. There was a substantial buffet, and you could order off the menu too.
3. Our room was beautiful, and very big. It was also ready at 1pm when we arrived, even though check in isn't until 3pm, which is a plus
4. The leisure centre was nice, although the jacuzzi was out of order while we were there.
5. The spa seemed lovely, but unfortunately it was booked up so we couldn't get an appointment.
6. There was a little card in the room with lists of things to do in the local area.'10 things to do in the rain, 10things to do without a car, 10 things to do with kids'. I thought this was a nice idea.
7. The views were gorgeous, and the main hotel was nice. There was a nice open fire, armchairs etc.
8. There were proper mugs in the room to make coffee/tea/hot chocolate, instead of those little teacups, which was great.

The cons:
1. On checking in, we were told we had been 'upgraded' to a lodge. Our lodge was further down the avenue from the hotel, maybe 5mins walk. This mightn't seem long, but it was below freezing at night, so it wasn't ideal. The lodge wasn't really an upgrade, in my opinion. There was just a bedroom and bathroom, no living room or anything. It was just a hotel room, but further away from the rest of the hotel's amenities.
2. We read through the handbook, and decided that later we would like to order dessert as room service, which was mentioned in the handbook. When we asked, we were told that room service couldn't be done to the lodges for health and safety reasons because it was dark... We went to the hotel ourselves, ordered the desserts, and a nice waiter in the bar put them on a tray for us, and we brought the tray to the lodge ourselves
3. We had also planned to go for a drink in the bar after coming home from a day's shopping, but thought that a drink from the mini bar would be better so that we wouldn't have to walk in the cold to the hotel bar. It turned out that there was no mini bar in the room, even though it was described in the guest handbook.
4. One of the towels in the bathroom had a stain on it (only a minor thing really).
5. When we went to the bar for lunch, we sat down and waited for a few minutes, but the 3 barmen were chatting behind the bar and didn't seem to see us, nor could i get their attention, so i went up to ask them for a menu.
6. The 10% service charge that is on each bill is not in keeping with normal UK/Ireland tipping styles. It says that you can change this tip, but that isn't really the point. Although the staff do get the tip, it is evenly split between them. I have no interest in giving a tip to unhelpful staff, and I generously tip friendly, knowledgable staff, so I don't like this system.
7. The only time i got a bit annoyed was at breakfast. A waitress showed us to our table. I asked her if i could order coffee from her. She said "you can ask one of the other waiters for it". I don't understand why she couldn't get it, as she was serving other tables (she wasn't a manager or anything). There were no other waiters around, and although that waitress passed us a few times, she never thought to get the coffee for us, or even to ask another staff member to do it. We waited a few minutes, still no joy, then went to the buffet. I then asked another waitress, who was very friendly. I thought it was very rude to tell a guest to find someone else. It's basically saying 'no, that's not my job, ask someone else' instead of saying 'no problem, i'll get someone to do that for you'. This was my only real problem with the hotel.

We enjoyed the weekend, but i find it strange that the staff could be so 'hit and miss'. Having said that, I would stay here again, but i would ask to have a room in the hotel itself, not a lodge.
