Description: A Relaxed Waterfront Restaurant. The bright restaurant leads out onto a spacious terrace where on a sunny day you can enjoy afternoon tea (the Cornish way of course, jam first!), A pre-dinner glass of fizz, or a long and lazy lunch. It's a great spot to watch life on the estuary unfold, from boats of all shapes and sizes to the local wildlife which includes resident swans and the occasional dolphin.Fowey River oysters, local scallops, West Country meat and Cornish cheeses... Hungry yet? 'Q' restaurant at The Old Quay House offers excellent dining in a relaxed, unstuffy setting. Forget unsmiling waiters, small portions and whispered conversations, dining here is all about fun and enjoyment - quality local and season produce features heavily on head chef Ben Bass'menu of creative, contemporary dishes. Our wine list, hand-picked by Britain's youngest Master of Wine, is pretty good too...

“lovely food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

We picked this restaurant on the strength of it reviews and we were not disappointed. We sat outside in the sun and i ordered a Prosecco unfortunately it was rather flat and when I told the waiter he changed it straight away. The service was good and the food was of a very good standard but it was a bit pricey. I had the deer which was very good, but I was in a restaurant in Bath a couple of days later and had deer again( which also melted in your mouth ) and it was half the price.

“Service, what service...?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

Stopped here for lunch on a Friday in August. The restaurant looks very attractive and the terrace overlooking the harbour is great.

There were a couple of other tables occupied, but it was quiet for the time of year.

I have no idea how good the food is, but sounds like most people have enjoyed it.

However, I didn't get to find out. We left after 30mins, due to service that was somewhere between shocking and non-existent. We had to ask for menus after 10mins; when finally asked for a drinks order, we tried to also order food but weren't allowed to; then after 15mins with no drinks materializing, we had enough and left....!!

A shame, as we were looking forward to a nice lunch in a great location....

Dear Cregoe,

Thank you for your recent review and I am sorry if we didn’t live up to our normal high standards. Perhaps we can explain our procedures :-

When we are preparing for a busy lunch everyone is behind the scenes and occasionally there is no one on the desk to meet guests who arrive early . To combat this we have signs which state the times we are open at the front door and then a further sign in the restaurant asking guests to “please wait to be seated “The signs are designed to inform and further ensure that we greet every guest and are able to serve them to our highest standards. On the odd occasion that guests miss the sign , we too miss diners that are on the terrace and so a delay may occur, it is very rare.

We hope this hasn’t deterred you from visiting us again though and experiencing what Q Restaurant and the whole team have to offer.

My regards

Anthony

“Tasty treats”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2013

After a days sailing we booked at this lovely restaurant for its views on the quay side in Fowey over the weekend and the views did not disappoint.

It made a lasting impression upon us for different reasons.
Tasty cooking, a bit edgy and has all the arrogance you would expect from such a young chef and team so, both good and bad. If you want to trial their gourmet experience this is for you.

Service was good but, a bit too fast and the presentation slightly out of balance (the starter plates were a huge weird shape and size and the poor waitress could not fit it between the cutlery). The waiting on staff are generally very young so, don't expect that they understand the menu and great food, the manager will need to step in for that.

The chef clearly puts in time and effort into his dishes and on the whole needs a fatter budget
as you shouldn't arrive too hungry or save yourself throughout the day because you are dining out here.

We had been out all day sailing and physically burning calories so, eat normally (our mistake) otherwise you will feel somewhat hungry after your meal as the food has been prepared for its taste and not portion size and you can't fill up on bread portions either - so you might feel a little short changed in the pocket as the menu is very expensive for what you get (starters and mains are 'taster' menu size).

Good luck.
