“Fantastic”
Reviewed September 11, 2010

Me and my husband spent three nights at Foye Old Exchange from The bank holiday Monday 30/08. We stayed in the four poster room which was really lovely, a large bright room with a seperate large dressing/shower room. We were blessed with fabulous weather and walked the coast paths to Polkerris Beach and Polperro - The walk to Polperro was challenging but well worth it for the stunning coastal scenery. It great coming back to our room after a long day, to relax for a few hours before going out for the evening. We were extremely impressed by the food at Tiffins and would highly recommend.
Michael our host was a real character and a wealth of local knowlege. His breakfasts were really tasty and massive ! We had a fantastic stay and will definately return.

Great location, in the middle of Fowey. Breakfast is one of the best (you won't need to eat anything else for the rest of the day) and served by Michael who has a wealth of knowledge about the area. A very friendly, welcoming place to stay and we will definitely return. Would also recommend The Lugger for super home-cooked food and friendly staff.

I,m always a bit apprehensive about booking accomodation far from home as it is so essential to the whole holiday experience. After staying the first of seven nights in this gem of a B&B I knew I had made the right choice.
The accomodation is located perfectly close to the centre of the town, close to the small beaches and beside all the scenic walks.
We booked into the four poster room which was perfect in size and full of character.
The bonus for me was the friendliness of the hosts which helped add to the comfort of the stay. They are both real characters and very helpful. And the breakfast has to be seen to be believed, it really will set you up for the rest of the day. If planning a trip to Fowey and are looking for good value accomodation I would highly recommend this accomodation.

We went down to Fowey for a long weekend and were lucky to be blessed with great weather. We stayed in the Old Exchange and had the Four Poster room. On arrival the hotel is quite hard to find, but you soon learn your way around the tiny twisted streets of this quaint little town. This B&B turns out to be a 1 minutes walk from the High Street and the seafront – perfect! There is enough room to pull your car up to unload it before taking ti back up the hill to the car park. We were greeted by Michael, who turned out to be a great host. His infectious enthusiasm for the town and Cornwall in general was lovely, and his knowledge of the local area made our stay all the more enjoyable. As for the breakfasts, well I loved them. We didn’t at lunch the whole time we were here, and being so full of food was a good excuse to get up into the picturesque hills around Fowey and do some good walking!

Hints for a stay: Park your car in the free car park as advised by Michael. It is only about 2 minutes past the one that costs about a tenner a day, and if you don’t fancy the walk the bus runs up the hill about every 15 minutes. Sam seems to have a bit of a monopoly on local restaurants… and with good reason! The lobster in his main place in Fowey was off the charts, and the food in his little place in the next town of Polkerris was also very good, but paled in comparison to the view, as it is set in the old lifeboat station right on the waters edge. Obviously the Eden project is a must.

All in all thanks to Michael and his wife for making our stay really enjoyable. This place is great, and compared to much more expensive options in Fowey, represents really good value… Thanks again!! Simon and Sarah.

This review is late because I was awaiting the gift of superlative travel writing to give the Foye Old Exchange its due. That didn’t happen so I will go with my limited skills.
The rooms and bathrooms at the Old Exchange are immaculate and large enough to be comfortable. The rooms, excellent in their own right, take second place to the hospitality offered by the owners, Celia and Michael Penprase.
Michael is the "front man" a job for which he was born, while Celia’s work is more often in the background with room maintenance and cooking. Both are beyond praise.
The cooked English breakfast is massive! My husband loves his English breakfasts but each day of our week's stay he would ask Michael to make it smaller than the previous day.
The hosts hospitality also extends outside the guest house. While trudging up the hill to catch the local bus, Celia stopped and offered us, as well as two friends who were staying at another B and B, a lift to the train station. She drove us several miles out of her way to our destination.
In reference to the formerly mentioned friends, each day when we met we would compare breakfasts, rooms and conviviality of our host., It wasn't a contest; it was a rout! With a week’s stay in a less-busy, “shoulder” season, we came to know our hosts well. We especially loved being invited into the lounge at the end of the day to share a glass of wine and everyone’s stories with Michael and Celia.
If you are a newcomer to the UK bed and breakfast experience, staying here will spoil you for all future stays at any other B and B. If you are an experienced b and b traveler, it will provide the standard for all future lodgings

This is a great little B&B in a very central location within Fowey. Michael, the owner, was very friendly and entertaining with lots of stories to tell, and the breakfast was superb. We stayed in the four poster bedroom which was very quaint, of a good size and we had a pleasant overall stay.

That said, I did find the mattress to be very uncomfortable and had a disrupted night's sleep as a result. If they changed the mattress the overall experience could be so much better.

One other thing also worth mentioning is that I felt slightly misled about the tariff. Unfortunately I had to cancel our first night's stay at short notice as I suffered from a severe spell of food poisoning the night before we were due. When I called to say we would be coming for the second night only, they told me we would have to pay a higher single night rate which I of course accepted as more than reasonable. It was only the next morning when I checked out that it became evident that the £20 deposit I had already paid would not count towards the final amount, making the room poor value for the final amount we paid.

But aside from this unusual circumstance, I would still recommend this place and hope that they are more transparent about the loss of the deposit in future.
