Just got back from a last minute night away in room 6 at The Old Quay House Hotel. We were looking for somewhere with a view across the Harbour with impeccable service and very central to Fowey because we don't do walking up hills! This hotel was perfect. After whittling down from 13 different establishments, the Tripadvisor reviews clinched it and we weren't disappointed. There seemed to be two negative points on the reviews, one being seagulls (seriously?) which we did not hear at all when in our room. My husband was particularly impressed with the almost hermetically sealed French windows and double glazing which opened out onto spectacular views of boats bobbing about on the water. In fact I took a panoramic video from the bed on my iPad! The second negative point mentioned on the reviews was the parking. Fowey is a harbour town with a single car width road running through it and this hotel is bang in the middle! Once you get there, you realise that it is normal procedure to stop your vehicle and block the road for a short time to unload bags, for delivery vehicles to deliver etc. I have to say that the whole routine is seamless and well advised in advance. You stop, a member of staff comes out to take the bags and give you a parking permit with excellent direction to a car park, 800 yards away. You drive there, and by the time you get back, your bags are in your room. When we checked out, we just carried our overnight bag back to the car park without a problem and neither my husband or myself are particularly fit! So that covers the negative side of the reviews we read. Both proved to be groundless and, if I may say, somewhat spurious considering the reason that most people go to Fowey because it is a small harbour town with quaint roads. So onto the positive reviews! From the moment I phoned to make the booking to the moment we left, the staff were just brilliant. Warm, friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We both felt welcome, comfortable and amongst friends. The room was just fantastic, tasteful with everything you could need. The White Stuff toiletries were divine. We ate dinner in the hotel and the waiter was enthused and knowledgable about what was on offer. The meal was delicious, beautifully presented and the cheese board was one of the best I have ever had. Breakfast was also exceptional. A completely guest friendly hotel. We will definitely be visiting again.
