Sitting in the sun with a pint looking out to the estuary just watching the boats bobbing about. Perfect to while away an hour on holiday.

Easy access for canoeists and kayakers alike, clean water, but a little shallow in places for a deep water paddle

We were lucky to stay in an apartment (Barnacles from Rural Retreats) which had a balcony overlooking the Bodinnick Ferry in Fowey. It was a truly wonderful eight days. Just watching the ferry going backwards and forwards across the river carrying cars and people from one side to the other was fascinating. There are some quite large ships which come past as well - either going to or departing from the china clay depot just upstream from the ferry. Across the river from us was the former house of Daphne du Maurier. It has now been fully restored by her son who still lives there. Life on the river is an endless passage of small yachts, dinghies and fishing boats - you can sit for hours just enjoying the unfolding scene.

We went on the 45 minute cruise on a small river boat from the quayside in Fowey. This is excellent value and gives an opportunity to see the estuary - the town of Fowey and the village of Polruan - and the buildings further up the river including the china clay works. China clay is still brought to this by a long line of railway trucks each day. Our guide did say that the china clay industry in Cornwall has declined in recent years because of cheaper production in Brazil.

We also crossed on the Bodinnick Ferry to start the Hall Walk. It's a fairly steep climb up the hill by the Ferry Inn but the views from the top, as you start the walk, are superb.

Fabulous spot to sit and watch all the boats coming and going. Buzzing little place when the sun is shining. Lots of lovely bakeries and sandwich shops and pubs to buy a picnic and just watch the world go by.

This is a traditional and old Cornish harbour with so many amenities and interesting views of harbour life. From dingy's to ocean going ships slipping by at close quarters. Look on line to see what activities may be on when you visit. Lots of eating places. Best to park cars out of harbour area as small and busy road, though some parking available on some quays.

Various boat trips and hire boats are available. Do walk the whole length of the town,or you may miss something of interest.

No real negatives, other than can be very busy and watch the seagulls when eating outside ! Cornwall is VERY dog friendly and we found Fowey to be so, too.
