A wonderful hotel! We were proberly the youngest couple staying but were still treated very very well. Only ate there for breakfast but totally first class! We had a wonderful room with the only problem being a noisy radiator! Were upgraded to another room strait away! And if any reading this has a love for a night cap brandy, the xo is something special! Rosie and Jim.
I read the reviews after we had booked and was apprehensive about our stay, but overall, I have good memories.
The Good:
- the staff is friendly
- the food (dinner & breakfast) is very good.
- you can pay for parking right outside the hotel (that is difficult to navigate,but the nature of the town. Our space was taken by someone else on arrival, but it was quickly remedied)
- views from room were lovely (if you book a view room)
- views from hotel are lovely and great location perched above town.
The not so good:
- room and common areas need updating. Specifically, the carpet in the room is worn. As a previous reviewer stated, there are areas of wallpaper that you can see peeling (like in stairwell)
- mold on the bathroom ceiling, and a little bit in the tiles
- lack of attention to details- for example, the mattress box spring is not covered/skirted, just exposed.
- no wi-fi on the third floor. Strongest signal in the bar and lounge downstairs.
- feels old, not in the good way
- gardens could use more maintenance
Overall, we did enjoy our stay, as Fowey is a lovely little town. Waking up to the beautiful views, with good food and friendly service helped to outweigh the faded hotel. With some updating this hotel could be top notch, but right now, unfortunately, I have to agree with previous reviewers that it needs help.
If you don't mind spending the money and go with lowered expectations as we did, then you may not be disappointed. But, if you are one that pays attention to details and go expecting perfection, then you may be disappointed. Or, if you consider this a splurge, you may be disappointed. But it was, overall, still a pleasant holiday.
Charming "old fashioned" hotel with attentive, friendly staff. Food was excellent and timely. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We had a room with a view - always something happening on the Fowey River. It would be a shame to stay here without a view! The bedroom was small with sheets and blankets - not duvets. The bathroom had recently been reburbished with an excellent shower over the bath. The public rooms and bedrooms were a little faded but this all added to the charm - as did the gated lift! The free mini cream tea provided was as good as any cream tea anywhere in Cornwall. We found the whole experience very relaxing and will be going again in the future
We have stayed many times at the Fowey Hotel since we originally found it (all part of the fun!). Standing proudly on the banks of the river Fowey and overlooking Fowey Harbour with views directly over the water to Polruan, up the river estuary and out to sea, this superb period property couldn't be better located if you tried. The hotel itself has a variety of differently configured rooms, we have our favourite but we're not telling you which one! The hotel lift is a listed treasure directly out of an edition of Poirot! Suffice it to say that in my many years travelling the world I can honestly say that I have never met hotel staff anywhere else that are as genuinely friendly, helpful and nice as the Fowey Hotel. They all seem genuinely pleased to be there and happy to help you out with whatever you need, no matter how trivial your request might be. First class! Fowey town is a five minute walk through pastel coloured houses nestling along the waterside. The town itself offers everything you could ever want on your holiday from superb restaurants, great pubs and quality boutiques and shops including banks, a chemist, more than one bakery, and a post office. Water taxis and the Polruan ferry await your pleasure in the harbour offering frequent trips around the estuary, to other harbours or over to Polruan for a look at pretty houses, a working small boatyard and more pubs, shops and restaurants! Fowey is a great central base from which to visit all of Cornwall with its many, many beautiful towns, harbours and attractions and the Fowey Hotel is a perfect place to base your holiday where you can enjoy all the benefits of comfortable, large rooms with breathtaking views, great food from their noted restaurant and relaxing bar overlooking the estuary. We however just come here on short trips to relax and enjoy the locality in great comfort and style. Whatever honks your horn as they say, the Fowey Hotel has it all!
My wife and I like this friendly place so much that I'm not going to write about how amazingly friendly and attentive is the service or describe the chef's stunning creations in case lots of other people want to go there! Hazel B's review says it all. OK so parking can be tricky; its better if you can cope with stairs and steep slopes; some windows rattle when its stormy; you can't cancel at short notice and the free wi-fi is limited to the public rooms, but the views and ambiance more than compensate. It is a particularly good location if you want interesting local history and a good choice of local circular walks that can be almost as demanding as you like. We've been there about ten times over twenty years and plan to continue visiting as long as we can afford to do so.
We felt that this was the best location and value in Fowey. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Do reserve a parking space. Great views and wonderful gardens. Close to city center activity but not in it, so it is quiet at night. The only negative is that the carpet in our room is in need of replacement.
