“Nice fish”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Good fish dishes spoiled by microwaved vegetables; I wouldn't ave minded waiting to have everything freshly cooked.
Friendly owner and staff, good refuelling stop and not expensive. Better places in Fowey though

“Disappointed”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

Called in at lunchtime a couple of years ago seeing homemade soup advertised on the board outside but once we went in and sat down we realised the place was quite grubby and quite cluttered with a trolley full of paperwork and telephone directories etc at the side of counter. The soup was edible but not very appetising. Noticed last year that the outside had been given a fresh coat of paint but judging by comments little else has changed.

“Good food, friendly staff...what more can you ask!”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

Not many places serving food at 5pm which was why we originally chose this place. We both had calamari - fresh and perfectly cooked, followed by John Dory and mussels - all excellent, although presentation was a bit hit and miss. Staff were friendly and polite and while the surrounding were a bit old fashioned we wouldn' t hesitate to back.

“Does every Trip Advisor want chain shop bland and smiley faces”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

I say what I find. We found the commodore in the midst of Fowey which for a lovely old fishing port is filled with "traditional" Cornish "bistros" and "tapas" bars. We were warmly welcomed and served fantastic Monk fish and gorgeous Fillet steak with a bottle of Barefoot white and garlic bread for under thirty quid. So what there were no fake decor or smarmy Italian waiters but hey this is Cornwall. Yes the decor is not Zizzis but the place was full of locals enjoying the good grub and lack of stuck up day trippers and their screaming kids like in every other restaurant in FOY.
So I say if you live by Trip Advisor reviews stay way and leave this great little restaurant, good chef and real real Cornish character then go and eat at Rick Steins for gods sake.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed September 19, 2013 via mobile

We arrived at such an awkward time that for a very late lunch, we were just glad to find somewhere to serve us. We were attracted by the cute interior and their specials boards of fresh fish.
We had whitebait and scallops to start. Whitebait were covered in batter and fried, although not freshly caught they were tasty enough with lemon to squeeze over them. Scallops had the attachment left on, and so the sear wasn't good and so lacking in flavour. Garlic bread was lovely however.
Fresh monkfish and fresh sole for mains. The sole tasted lovely, except for a thin fish it was spoiled by the fried batter around it. Shame. Monkfish was okay but when you compare to the restaurant Mackerel Sky in Penzance where the monkfish tastes as though it was caught a few hours earlier, it was disappointing.
Service was friendly and relaxed.
This was the most expensive meal we've had but far from the best meal we've had.
Overall it was okay but disappointing.
