“A memorable getaway.”
Reviewed July 18, 2013 via mobile

I stayed here with my family. My daughter being 6 month old then, I was very cautious about cleanliness. But the hotel is very nice. Though its a very old building, we didnot face much discomfort. The staff was very friendly. They have a limited choice of al carte menu for vegetarians. But the taste was awesome. Ours was a mini suite facibg the golf course and morcambe bay. Had breathtaking views of sea entire time. Would definitely stay again.

I have been a regular vistor to this hotel for many years and have always highly recommended the hotel and its staff to my family and friends. However, on my recent visit my opinion has now changed. The staff all appear unhappy, the cleanliness of the rooms is way below the usual standard and there is what I can only say an "uneasy atmosphere" around the hotel. I asked several staff when Yvonne the Manager would be on duty and was dismissed each time and on one occasion very rudely told by a blonde housekeeping assistant that "Yvonne would not be back". I do not know what is going on but if you wish your regular guests to keep returning then things should be sorted out. I for one will not be back if the current standards are not improved.

Many thanks for your feedback on your recent stay.Sorry to hear that your visit was not as you expect. There has been no change in personnel other than the fact that the General Manager has not been here for a few weeks and I sincerely apologise for you being told incorrectly otherwise. The hotel is currently undergoing further refurbishment in bedrooms and all public areas. We would like to see you return to the hotel again soon and to show that the hotel is indeed as it was previously. All the team are currently enjoying a busy season with both our regular guests and new customers from around the world.

Arrived on the Saturday finally finding the hotel as drove past it twice as sign was obscured by foliage. The staff at reception was pleasant and friendly enough. when we got into the room we were very disappointed to say the least, definitely not the room they use for publicity pictures.

The decor in the room was shabby and has seen better days, socket in room did not work, exposed old pipe work sticking out under the unit and dead bug on sheet when we turned down the covers at night, windows were difficult to open and one window I just gave up on. The shade on the lamp badly stained as was the frame of the bed

The bathroom was not what I expected floor tiles were cracked tiles on wall around bath were not smooth (tiles in and out) we found a pubic hair lying behind the sink, cobwebs all over the place bulb out in the bathroom and the shower could do with being renewed.

The sound insulation between floors (or in this case the lack of it) was very poor after two hours in bed I finally had to complain about the noise to the reception, though being fair to the staff they acted immediately. Next to our room (28) is a staff area and we could here every word that was said. A bit of sound proofing is really needed. Sorry at £100 per night I wont be making a returning visit. A 19th Century hotel certainly not fit for the 21st Century.

Room Tip: Steer clear of Room 28

I stayed here with two others in 2012. I had a lovely spacious room with a gorgeous view. The room was clean, comfortable and had everything I needed. The decor is slightly old fashioned, but it was all in good condition I found.

The hotel is in a beautiful spot, and the woods around are lovely for a walk, especially if you're a dog owner.

Our meal was excellent, I enjoyed every bit of it. I would have liked to have spent longer there.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view if there is one. It's beautiful!

We stayed for four nights at the beginning of June on the special mid-week deal which we felt was really good value for money. We were very lucky and blessed with lovely weather, which helps! The hotel needed money spending on it, like so many in the current economic climate, which we accepted, as we have stayed at other Strathmore Hotels and experienced the same, but our room was fine with marvellous views over the golf course to Arnside and its railway bridge; the bathroom had been modernised and was excellent with clean fresh towels daily. We had a train ride from Grange to Arnside - 6mins & 90p each way! - which was the best way to go, bearing in mind the distance by car.
The service at the hotel was excellent, we thoroughly enjoyed all our meals, both breakfast and evening meal. We did not try the a la carte menu as there was sufficient choice on the set menu.
The hotel was well situated to walk down to the Promenade whilst being in a quiet countryside setting. It was clear that on-going refurbishment was done on a rolling programme as funding allowed, and was a challenge in a Victorian hotel of this type, but we could see that large parts of the interior were clean and had been refurbished (the dining room was lovely) whilst other areas were waiting to be done. We would stay here again on a budget break, the service was first class.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Bay

We had a pleasant stay at the Cumbria Grand. On first appearance the hotel does look a little tired in places with regards to decor, walls, carpets, doors and lifts etc. it's an old building and does shows its age. We really spent little time in the hotel as we were at at wedding at the Netherwood which is 'next door' but I have to say that the room was clean, spacious and we had a lovely view from the 3rd floor over the golf course and coastline which I appreciated. The bed wasn't that great but slept well enough and there was a little further evidence of tiredness in the decor although the room furniture was faily nice and plentiful. The in room TV was also a little small. The breakfast was very good, plenty of choice and of good quality. The service was noticeably good on the couple of occasions it was required which is always a top priority. Would stay here again and recommend as long as you're not looking for top notch accommodation. It's a 3 star hotel and the £96 price was justified. It really did a thoroughly decent job for us for one the one night we needed.

Wonderful building in an amazing setting but sadly lacking power at the helm to turn this hotel into a jewel in the crown. We stopped for high tea after a day at Windermere with a party of 26.Due to a further 3 coaches being booked in for a meal the service was cramped and rushed. One of the choices was fish and chips.....not sure when the overcooked piece of fish was prepared but the result was dry and lacking in any flavour. The selection of cakes was bottom-of-the-range shop bought and very disappointing. We have done many trips like this and the usual standard is outstanding, from freshly cooked mains to homemade cakes and pastries. One of the main reasons for our visit was to decide on our New Year break location, sadly it will not be The Cumbria Grand.Management, you need to address the overall attention of this hotel before too much damage is done and you lose much needed custom.
