“Ideally placed for train travellers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

We enjoyed a three night bed and breakfast special break and booked dinner for our final evening. The hotel is situated close to the train station which was perfect for us as we travelled to Grange by train and used the train during our stay. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. Whilst there the weather was very cold but the hotel was always warm and welcoming. Our bedroom was upgraded to a promenade facing room which was very comfortable with a very large bed. The bedroom and all public areas were kept clean. The full English breakfast was very tasty. The evening meal was delicious and excellent value for money with attentive service. The only reason we don't give an excellent rating is because we felt the bar area itself could have been better. All in all we would stay at The Grange again.

We joined family staying at the hotel for lunch today, and enjoyed the experience. We have always liked Grange Over Sands, and the hotel is positioned overlooking the promenade, and the Kent estuary, the tide was well in today, and the view was spectacular. The hotel is a truly impressive, imposing building, in it's own spectacular garden and surrounds, with a lovely fountain near the main entrance. The hotel is set up to cater for weddings, and if you need a venue it is well worth a look, as photos around the gardens would be fabulous. Although we were only eating there, our family were particularly impressed with the hotel, food, and the lovely indoor pool next to part of the dining room. Inside, the hotel is immaculate, and traditional in style. The menu was comprehensive, catering well for both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. The staff were very polite and attentive. I had the club sandwich, which was superb, my Wife had the goat cheese and fig crepe, which She enjoyed, and my in-laws had the soup of the day with a sandwich, and they enjoyed that too. It is a very nice place to be, and for a 4* hotel, very reasonably priced. The only downsides we experienced, were the restricted area for parking, and the fact we had to wait the best part of an hour for the food to arrive. We would go back though.

This is a family-run Victorian hotel, modernised in character. They know how to recruit and keep excellent staff. Nothing was too much trouble. My wife is disabled and their facilities were the best we have found anywhere. The food is a delight and the hotel full of character, with views across woodland and Morecambe Bay. We were delighted with the whole place.

After we had booked onto a three night dinner bed and breakfast deal at the Grange I subsequently managed to develop shingles , and then the weather forecast was for “the worst storm since 1987”.

Should we still go?? Having had the experiences of riding out a tropical storm in Mauritius about five years ago , and also coping with insurrection when in Egypt , the answer was “Yes”.

And we are glad we did - as the weather wasn’t too bad overall other than a few showers and my discomfort really only kept me out of the hotel’s swimming pool and leisure facilities. We enjoyed our stay.

We had previously only passed through Grange over Sands on the train and felt it looked the sort of place which warranted a few days as a base to explore the area. The Grange is fairly typical of a Victorian built ex railway hotel .Most other reviews have described the hotel far more eloquently than I could- so you should be able to decide if this sort of place is not for you .

We were quickly and pleasantly checked in by reception and took the lift up to our room - we had been upgraded to a room at the front on the second floor which afforded a view over the town and the river estuary/Morecombe Bay.

The room consisted of a separate bedroom and sitting area - which my wife felt the hotel could have made bit better use of. The bed was large and comfortable, the bathroom clean with both a bath and separate large shower. There was ample storage space, and regularly replenished tea & coffee supplies.

The food in “Carriages” restaurant was first class: well presented, good quality and portions were sensibly sized . The service was attentive but appropriately discreet. It was quiet in the restaurant most of the time but on one evening a fellow guest chose to use a cellular telephone to make a call of a somewhat personal nature to a relative for almost twenty minutes in a fairly loud voice - which amused some and annoyed others. I was waiting for Dom Joly to appear - but he never did !

Quite a few guests ( especially those with younger families) chose to eat from the Lounge Menu which looked to have sufficient choice and be reasonably priced.

Breakfast was fine, and I have to agree about the exceptional quality of the scrambled egg that a previous review highlighted.

The staff were all (both local and international) exceptionally friendly & efficient.

What else would we have liked to see from our perspective to entice us to return ?

Well, perhaps a comfortable residents lounge - separate from the current bar/ lounge dining area- on a high floor overlooking the estuary. I know you have to pay for views in the lake district, but this would have enhanced guest provision, and possibly created an intimate area in a building which does not lend itself easily with its tall ceilings and fifty plus rooms/suites.

I have stayed at the Grange Hotel many times and, in my opinion, it is one of the best hotels around. It is always spotlessly clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The swimming pool and jacuzzi are super and a great place to relax. I have to say that the highlight for me is the fantastic food. The dishes are always beautifully prepared and presented and absolutely delicious. If you stay here be sure to have dinner in Carriages restaurant as it is an amazing experience. I will continue to return to the Grange Hotel and would thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: A front facing room is best and has great views.

Mixed review. Upon arriving we were delighted. It is a beautiful building in a beautiful setting. Simple as that. Driving up to the building, it's difficult to suppress a grin. The communal reception and corridors are also quite lovely and quaint. I guess our disappointment was in the room. Not the hotel's fault, focused on a different type (age?) of customer, but for us was a wee old fashioned and grandmotherly. Didnt get to eat in the hotel as we were on an itinerary. If you're over the age of 60 I would say this hotel would tick most every box and I guess that's most of the visitors to this level of hotel.

We stayed at The Grange Hotel for two nights and were pleasantly surprised by the approach, the long drive up to the Hotel displays a beautifully manicured garden and entrance to the Hotel. The receptionist who checked us in gave us all the information we needed and we went to our room. Unfortunately it did not face the front but it was a lovely room, with a nice bathroom and it was very clean. The towels were very large and fluffy and the bed linen was of a high quality.

We ate in the dining room which was lovely, with good service and tremendous choice.

The breakfast was also good with plenty of choice and staff on attendance at all times.

I would recommend this Hotel to anyone who would like to stay there, be it Summer or Winter

Good Value too
