Came up for a Saturday night function at a neighbouring hotel and decided to make a weekend of it. Found it to be an extremely pleasant experience in a delightful setting (once one got accustomed to the omnipresent gilded rococo) with friendly and helpful staff and well-appointed facilities in a good-sized suite. There was a large wedding party which in no way detracted from the service we received, despite comments from other reviewers. Service was excellent and the food was fine. All in all a pretty good place to spend a weekend.

We got married at the Grange Hotel on the 22nd September 2012 and we have nothing but praise for the hotel, its owners and staff. Everything ran absolutely perfectly and made our special day the best day of our lives. All the rooms were beautiful - we couldn’t have asked for more! Our honeymoon suite, the Broughton Suite, was so lovely we stayed an extra night! The food was delicious and went down a treat with all our guests. Luckily the sun was shining and we were able to make the most of the hotels stunning grounds and views! We would especially like to thank Hugh, Angela, Brian and Andrea for all their help in the preparation and organisation of our Wedding. In fact all the staff were really friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for them. We would give the hotel 10/10!!!! Thank you so much and are looking forward to coming back for our first anniversary, the Grange Hotel will always have a special place in our hearts.
Emma and Mark

Room Tip: The Broughton Suite is beautiful.

I stayed here this week on a company conference and was pleasantly surprised by the hotel. My room was fine and clean, although no bath, service was generally good and the hotel has many handy seating areas.

Food was excellent throughout.

Only downside was WIFI, which was free but they could probably not charge for it anyway as it was patchy to say the least.

Some nice walks nearby as well.

My last couple of reviews (of other less salubrious places) have been pretty negative, so reviewing somewhere as good as The Grange is a welcome relief!

I stayed here for three nights midweek in September 2012 as part of a work-sponsored training course.

It's a huge old place but unusally well-maintained. The service from check-in through dinner service is friendly and top drawer. Peter the waiter might look like the missing grumpy Chuckle Brother, but don't be fooled - he's first class.

The Grange apparently hosts lots of weddings and I can't imagine many disappointed punters. The only two slight oddities I can mention are a) having your breakfast under a mirror ball - a byproduct of the wedding market I suppose; and b) the lift. It works as if it was Mr Otis' prototype. But there are plenty of stairs, so don't worry.

I was allocated Room 223, which comes with a roll-top bath actually in the bedroom, a small lounge area, good work desk, a nice solid four poster bed and a separate double shower ensuite with Jack and Jill handbasins. It's all nicely decorated and comfortable. I can imagine the mother of the bride or Hyacinth Bucket staying here and finding nothing to moan about.

I saw a guy in overalls armed with a paintbrush working every day - turns out he's one of the owners and it looks like the care he puts into making sure it's all shipshape is a labour of love. If he gets to read this between coats - it shows. The other (lady) owner appeared on reception and again the level of service and attention to being helpful was flawless.

The food was excellent, despite us being on an all-in deal. I judge hotels on several basic criteria (cleanliness, value, does the TV work?, food, is the bed comfortable, how good is the shower. etc.) and this place passes them all - especially my most onerous topic - the kipper test. Not only are the kippers very good, there's a breakfast option for smoked haddock too. And the poached eggs are done in 'proper' vinegar water. To many of you this might not mean much, but to devoted breakfast monsters it's a hallmark. You don't get that in many places and it sets the Grange into top tier territory.

Apologies for the quality of the pics - I took them on my Blackberry.

If you're going anywhere around the Southern Lakes, I can whole-heartedly recommend the Grange.

Room Tip: Choose 221-224 if they're available. There might be equally good ones elsewhere, but my colleagu...

Having been to grange over sands previously we were aware that this area is very relaxing and sought after but we felt this hotel has the option to exploit this.

The location and grounds cannot be faulted really. The downstairs is pretty and feels like you are back in time a little. The spa is adequate and relaxing enough, although we were the only ones using it at the time so it may be less relaxing with more people.

The bedroom was the real let down. On entry it smelt musty and old. It was in total need of upgrading and decoration to justify the price. The toilet never flushed and the bed was so old you could see and feel the buttons on the mattress though the sheet!! The room was not even better than a dreaded travel lodge.

There was a good choice at breakfast and a nice dining area.

In all we felt the price £ 148 was about £50 too much.

Impressive entrance way and a promising hotel's exteriors fail to deliver once we got in; a badly design interiors including most hotel general rooms and the regular guest rooms. Its was too-decorated, trying to be both classic and luxurious at ones, leading to a design horror which in some cases hurts the eyes (Lounge, breakfast hall, elevators, bed canopy etc.)
The hotel is real at the heart of this town, nearby the train station if it matters, also close by to the excellent promenade which deserve your strolling time especially during evening hours.

Service was fair and lounge staff were friendly although not very professional.
The food in both lounge (light dinner) and during the included breakfast was fair but nothing out of the extraordinary. Deserts were lousy.

All in all - a fair accommodation option but it may become quite expensive and not that value-for-money in high-season,
