The Chequers , as a venue is all you want from a country pub in the vale, cosy with log fires etc. The greeting is warm and friendly, the food was hot and presented well. Unfortunately that is where the positives ended, the food tasted mass produced, the turkey we ordered was poor quality and mainly tasteless brown meat, the gravy was made from bought in concentrate and the Yorkshire pudding was so hard you had to chip away at it.......very average. We had to ask twice for the bill which never came so we had to chase it. This is a shame for a lovely location.

Arrived in the cold and wet but soon got warm with the welcoming bar and real fire. Had a drink in the rustic bar and then were called through to the dining room. Not the big main one, but a small area with about 6 tables.
There were 6 of us and no one had any complaints about the food. It was good quality pub bistro food with good portions.
The service was efficient, the staff could have been friendlier but it was Saturday night and they were very busy.
Would like to go back in the summer to enjoy a drink in the garden.
All in all a good dining experience. We would definitely go back.

We had a two night stay of B/B and eve meals.
Thoroughly recommend as everything was just great.
All aspects of food service and staff were first class, especially the staff.

Took a group of business colleagues midweek. We ate in the bar area rather than the formal restaurant. The atmosphere was lovely....a roaring fire, and a nice mix of eaters and drinkers.

Its not cheap, but you do get good quality food. I found the drinks quite expensive...£6.00 for a medium glass of wine, and £3.00 for half a lager.
Top recommendations would be the liver or the steak for main course....both melt in the mouth!

Overall, a good night, and I would return for both business and personal

This is a lovely looking pub, typically English with a roaring fire, however the food was sadly very disappointing. Crispy pork belly was served soft without even a hint of crispiness. We also ordered a steak and ale pie which was average, but the mash that accompanied it was inedible due to the amount of salt (and I like salt). We did complain and were made to feel that it was not the chef but our taste that was at fault. If you are a serious foody...beware!
