Description: The Stag at Barkston is an Archetypal country pub, off set from the A607 outside of grantham in rural lincolnshire. It offers classic country charm with its wood beams, slate floors and listed heritage. while offering great value locally sourced menus written and cooked by award winning chef Mike Loveridge. close to belton house, belton woods and wagtail park it is a perfect example of rural life.

Whilst staying at Belton Woods Lodges we opted out of the hotel restaurants and visited this pub for lunch. Food was pretty good particularly the home made chips and onion rings. Portions were generous to say the least. The team were very welcoming and helpful. Overall a very good lunch at a local pub at a fraction of the cost for similar quality at the Belton Woods Hotel. I understand the pub has been under new ownership for 6 weeks and based on this visit deserves to be supported and succeed.

Having read the reviews on TripAdvisor I thought I'd give The Stag a try. It certainly is a nice place with very friendly staff and the feel of a good old village pub. After a quick look at the menu I opted for the Steak and Tiger pie, (steak and ale really). Whilst waiting I had a pint of real ale which was well kept and tasty. The meal duly arrived and was well presented, three vegetables in their own dish with creamy mashed potato on the side. A nice pastry topping to the pie with plenty of pieces of meat in the dish. Unfortunately that's when the let down came along. The "steak" was actually stewing beef and was rather tough with pieces of gristle on most of it and the gravy was the result of a stew/casserole. I am sure other items on the menu would have been better but my choice was not the best. Proper pieces of steak would improve the pie considerably.

thankyou for your feedback, it all helps make future experiences more positive. on the subject of the meat in the steak and tiger pie we use diced steak chuck, while we agree it can contain some fattier pieces of meat. we have always believed it produces tastier results than traditional steak. and for the gravy filling, its homemade and lighter to give you more of a gravy nature to your pie. thanks for your review and we will keep it in mind!

thanks

We stayed at the Belton Wood hotel and found this pub just down the road (turn left from the hotel entrance. It was a Monday and some pubs dont offer food on Monday so we were pleased the pub was open for food. We received a very warm welcome from the owner, the menu choice was good and we all enjoyed a home cooked meal which was good value for money. The beef and tiger ale pie was fantastic as was the fish and chips. Movenpick ice-cream is a fantastic dessert and not available everywhere so leave room for it!

We would like to congratulate the new owners and their family and staff who made our visit to The Stag most enjoyable. We met up with some friends for lunch a few weeks ago when the owners first took over. We had been told the food was good and were not disappointed. The menu was excellent, the food was all freshly made and very, very tasty. Well done chef. We will certainly be back and would recommend a visit to anyone wanting good food, good presentation and value for money. Keep up the good work
